Seriously into cactus and succulents at one phase of my life. Spent a good 20 years developing 1/2 an acre into my little hideaway. Lot easier than Protea and Banksias!
Fun part was propagating many different species and giving them to friends. Looking forward to seeing the results over the years on visits back to Santa Cruz.

Thanks for the photos. I'm curious. Are you involved with cactus as a hobby, as a commercial operation or for a university botannical garden?
Whatever the reason, you clearly have spent years at it.

hey there say, Dr. F.... i never knew this...
i think i did see a few post of you, and cactus... but didn't know how
much you loved them...
thanks for all the shares...
my thoughts and/or memories of cactus:
1--when we were really little kids, our dad drove us from ohio, to calif... through arizona we saw the segorro (spelling?) cactus...
i loved them so very much... was so impressed, with seeing them, never forgot them...
2--my mom's little cactus garden, of many kinds, on one side of her house... always wanted one too...have not had a chance... but in south texas we had prickly pear, wild, all over the place!
3--the prickly pear, of south texas... wild! all over... i loved them...
we'd eat them too, when our more "palatble" ones were not producing...
and, we'd eat the "tunas" from the fields of the wild ones... loved them so much... miss them so much... :(
thanks so much for the share...
:)

Not sure who this Dr. F fella was, but sure glad he was banned, he posted such trashy cactus, loser...
I heard he got banned for contacting the Admin to try and get a hateful troll, "The Chief" Petty Officer" banned, truly criminal behavior!!
well any hoo
I grow cactus and succulents too,
I don't take as many photos as I used to, it's full time horticulture now
seed to sales, if anyone asked, I would call my specialty horticulture, growing plants
Sclerocactus unicinatus v. wrighti ^
Elcap's plant above is Sclerocactus unicinatus v. unicinatus, shorter spines
Cactus are a family of succulents that only grow in the Americas, South Africa has the greatest speciation of succulents, they are super fun to grow

The most recent poachers have been stealing from coastal northern California. The species on the Channel Islands are similar, but as far as we know so far, there are not wholesale poaching incidents on the islands. By the way there was a Supertopoan interviewed for both the written and video links above (wink, nod). I wish people would stop knocking them off the cliffs and taking Dudleya from the wild.

The species in the article is Dudleya fairnosa
You can take cuttings of the plant w/o ripping out the roots.
they are easy to reroot
Dudleya plants are not that old per se, they die back and new ones grow in their place, from seeds or broken off pieces
It's never cool collecting large quantities of native plants for resale
The Asian's are very hungry for succulents these days, collection of native species should be monitored and infractions should be punished.

Some of the ones from this bust were probably at least 50 years old. In some species, it is possible that some old plants are 100 to 150 years or more. I worked on a historical garden (at the Naval Postgraduate School) with some that may have been the originals planted in the 1880s or at least the 1920s and they were not as large as the largest in the wild. In cultivation with good soil and fertilizer, the plants can grow far more quickly than some of the wild plants probably do.

Dudleyas are very easy from seed. Planted in the fall and not covered with soil, one can get almost all of them to germinate. You don't need many or your pot will get very crowded.
I don't encourage the collecting of plants in the wild, but seed collecting has far less impact on a population.
There is one species I visited in 1984 and then again in about 1997 and about half of the plants in the species were gone. Lucky thing that the survivors grew under agaves or among cacti.

In 1983, there were few of a rare dudleya along a particular road. You could park right there. In 2015, I visited. There was no legal parking within 1/2 mile and there was a fence that was maybe 5.4 or 5.5 to climb over. The plants were recovering.
Three species were down to fewer than 50, thought to be extinct or nearly so because of non-native rabbits or goats. They are slowly recovering now that the rabbits and goats are off the islands.
Fortunately, many of the plants from the last couple of busts were common species.

That's a Dudleya saxosa aloides
Common in the Wonderland and Queen Mt.
I have put together a slide show of the Succulents of Joshua Tree for our Cactus Club, so I have accumulated a thorough photo gallery of all the succulents out there
It's apparent that this species has been collected out of all the areas that humans have been impacted. During the Spring, their pink flowers are commonly seen growing in almost in every suitable location in the outback of the Wonderland and Queen Mt., but you step on the trails going to the Astrodome and you won't see a single one.
And a Welcome to Steven McCabe, a renowned expert on Dudleya
I never knew he is a climber
but's it's his name in the article and in many others on Dudleya
I would love a clone of that beautiful hybrid you have developed.

Dudleya pachyphytum
from Cedros Island, one of the nicest Dudleyas as a potted plant
Hope to get seeds this year, we have 5 or 6 of them.
They grow well in our Coastal Climate.
Dudleya stolonifera on left, D. lanceolata on right
Dudleya edulis on right
These plants are only about 4 months old!
I grew them in my succulent Vegetable Garden,
I throw in seeds, water every other day and succulents grow like crazy.

Some are organized gangs, not just taking a few plants, but 10s of thousands of Dudleya plants. So, some rich guy in China is making money ripping off our coast. They are coming to the country, apparently intending to commit crimes. So, it seems like they lie on their tourist visas, steal plants, steal plants from state and national parks, commit fraud, and lie to federal agents. They have no ties to the community. The jail time is suspended if they don’t come back. Later, foreign national(s?) (more a Mom and Pop operation) with ties to the community were fined and jailed for a short time, but not deported. What are the native bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators supposed to do when 100,000s plants disappear over the range of several counties. What about the rabbits, mice, insects and the small birds, raptors, and owls that eat the things that eat or pollinate the Dudleya? And stripping the area increases coastal erosion near coastal roads.
Most of the plants they have been taking will die in the windowsills in China and Korea where the plants are headed.
