Supertopo friends-

As part of our efforts to raise more money so we can return to Switzerland later this winter to re-create some key scenes from my 1991 climb on the Eiger for the film we're working on, we've launched a plea on a fund-raising site called www.Kickstarter.com. The project is called Jeff Lowe's Metanoia (also the title of the film), but the link below should take you directly there.

I'd really appreciate if you'd go there and watch the video plea, then make a pledge at one of the reward levels, which start at $1, so anyone can be involved. Also, please consider passing along the information and link to your family and friends or even your entire mailing list. It's a numbers game, and the more supporters we have, the more the burden can be spread out, etc.

Jon Krakauer has agreed to narrate the film. More good news will be released on jefflowemovie.com and on a facebook page in the next few days. Of course, I'll try to keep Supertopo up-to-date, as well.

Many thanks,

-Jello

AC, I can't find a way to link directly to the project, but Steve's right, just type in Metanoia or Jeff Lowe into the search feature and it will take you there.

Supertopo is such a reliable well of support...thank you all!

Dry your eyes, eKatarina, I'll come back as a smoked oyster in a can and be gobbled up on some beautiful granite wall by a wonderful soul like you, but there's still a lot of time before that's gonna happen. Among other things I loved climbing for the problematic challenges it offered. These days I don't have to get up early for an alpine start, there's challenge enough whenever I rise, and a lovefest wherever I go.

-ABigJelloHugForeKat

EDIT: thanks for posting the correct link, Conner. I should have waited for you to do it. And thank you for your loving committment to this project...and to me.

Can't wait to see the film -- it's a fantastic trailer, left me yearning for more. Beautiful to see you with your daughter as well as all the inspirational climbing scenes.

Thanks for all the positive comments. We've had 39 pledges so far in less than two days, so it's a good start. Maybe I should point out that there are some rewards, as couchmaster mentioned, but several other important aspects to the Kickstarter program, as well.

First, if you have $1 to spare you can join the support team. We need people following the project and spreading the word just as much as we need $ from any individual. And in these hard times I completely understand having very little money to spare.

Second, your card will not be charged until March 3, 2011, which is the deadline for our fund-drive. Furthermore, if we haven't met our goal in full, no one will be charged one penny. Our goal on the Kickstarter drive is $125,000, which seems like a lot, and is, but it's only about 35% of the total budget. A couple members of the production team have already invested another 30%, and we're working to raise the final amount from sponsors in the outdoor industry, and that effort is tracking well.

Funny thing is, I retired from projects like this two years ago! My health was declining quickly and the stress of running the non-profit Ogden Climbing Parks activities was wiping me out. But then this one was presented to me and I agreed to do it if I didn't have to do much work. Of course, that didn't last long and now I'm fully invested, financially, emotionally and physically. The strange thing is...it feels great and I'm having fun!

Not being dead is a wonderful thing!

First of off, thanks for visiting with Curt, AKA "Dirtineye" during his last days with us. Your a remarkable person. I was at Foster Falls (TN) when you were there and climbed with Arno. Your an inspiration.

I don't have any money, but I did post up your video (AWESOME) on my Facebook page, and since there are many climbing friends here in the south, maybe someone will put up some bucks.... I may have a job (Hopefully) at the first of the year, and I will contribute. Until then, my admiration of you and your character will continue to inspire me to push forward.

We have Helena Long's student video piece up now on www.jefflowemovie.com
It's called Chasing Dragons. I like it - Helena is 15!

There's also a 1966 BBC newsreel about John Harlin's death on the first direct route on the Eiger. I followed that climb in the newspapers and television during the month-long siege. Harlan's death when a skinny fixed rope broke was one of the things that turned me off to siege climbing and helped me to see thatalpine style not only offers greater satisfaction, but is often safer.

We've also added Jon Krakauer's voice-overr to the teaser, which comes after the support plea on the kickstarter site: http://kck.st/f1tue2

Thanks Phylp, and everyone else. We're now at 33k. We,re about 1/4 through the fund drive and 1/4 pledged toward our goal with Kickstarter, so it's a tight race, but we have other efforts underway to spur the Kickstarter program.

This weekend we'll have some people passing out nice little cards at the Ouray Ice Festival leading them to Kickstarter and jefflowemovie.com. Actually we could use more help in that regard: if anyone is going to the festival and would like to help get the cards into people's hands, I'll ask Bill Leo if we can leave a box at Ouray Mtn Sports that you can grab from.

We have national magazine, newspaper and internet interviews coming up, an involvement to be determined with the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, yada, yada, yada. It ain't easy, finding finance for art!

On another front, we're beginning to see results, too, in advance of the Outdoor Retailer show later this month in SLC, with corporate sponsorships. We now are working toward a goal of 100 corporate sponsors at different levels before we are through. It feels doable. Speaking of the OR show, we need people to pass out information cards at the show as well. We will have a booth in the non-profit section and you could stop by and pick them up, there.

All-in-all, it's as busy as it used to be at Hacienda Lowe. Amazingly, it's not as hard to deal with as it was just a couple years ago. This project has really stirred my creative juices, and I have an equally motivated crew to get it all done.

Now, to add some pizzaz to this thread, let me offer the following, a nice little cache of granite and ice in the Mt Blanc massif. Many classics here. I've had wonderful times alone on several of the best routes on Mt Blanc du Tacul - anyone else have good memories from there?

OK, Brian, here's a pretty short story:

In the winter of 1993, I was training in Chamonix for a solo attempt on the beautiful West Face of Makalu, earth's 5th highest peak. After my Eiger climb I had heard some wispers in the pub one night from some European alpinists that, although Metanoia was indeed an impressive climb, it was suited to an American, big-wall aid specialist (which they apparently thought I was!), and that there was no way I would be able to keep up with the Euro's on fast solos of difficult, but not-aided modern mixed routes such as the Supercouloir Direct on the Tacul.

Well, I'm not really very competitive and I know my own capacities, but I had an oportunity one day to disabuse the lads, of their misperceptions.

I was on a mission to retrieve two big bags of gear that Catherine Destivelle had stashed at a hut situated accross from the Chere Couloir. Catching the 2nd cable car up the Aiguille du Midi, I skied down to the glacier, skinned up to the hut, piled the loads into an expedition pack, skied accross to the Supercouloir, left my pack and skis, made the probable first free ascent of the SuperCouloir, continued up the moderate ice to the end of the difficulties where many people call it good and rappel. (Not my normal MO but I was really just retrieving our gear that day).

I had started up about 11am and had finished the last of 12 rappels by a little after 2pm. I passed a French party who were on the 3rd pitch of the direct when I began to climb and hadn't progressed much by the time I went by. Apparently they let the word out because when I was in the pub again a couple nights later, the two climbers who had dismissed me a just a big wall specialist came over to congratulate me on the fastest ascent of the Supercouloir and the first "free" climb of the direct (about M6).

I hadn't told anyone about my day except for Catherine, and she could always be relied on for discretion in such matters.

Hi Jeff and Connie,

I live in Zurich, have a special attraction to the Eiger, and have nothing but admiration for Jeff.

I just made a pledge - fingers crossed you get to the target!

I would also be happy to offer some other Swiss-based assistance if necessary - whether it be a spare room to crash in Zurich, or some other little job which would just be easier for someone already on the ground in Switzerland.

Keep it in mind, let me know if something comes up. All the best!

Pete.

Bump for Jeff!

It was great to visit with you at the Outdoor Retailer Show.

Hopefully: I have lined up some outdoor company sponsorship!

I'm still working on that!

Best Wishes!

What happens if this thing doesn't have 125K by March 3rd? I can't imagine this not coming together. It looks to be the most important climbing film of this type in a long time, maybe ever.

Hey Fat, you know some rich people right? Get a few of 'em together to put this baby in the can!!

It's all-or-nothing funding with Kickstarter:

So far no one has paid a cent. You have only pledged to make a payment if it reaches 125K. If it doesn't reach that target your card is not changed.

Jello, I tried to "borrow" a photo from the Metanoia Facebook page of you and Ueli meeting and looking at the Eiger to post over here, but I couldn't do it.

Kickstarter says go to the FB page and "like" it.

Plus, there's some great pix over there.
