Our own MC bvb telling it like it was about Woodson! From Climbing February 1989. This article got me thinking about the place and it is so worth dreaming about!

He don't need no stinkin' string!

I gotta get down there. I visit my grandparents from time to time in Oceanside. It's not too far from there right?

Who's got the best beta for this place? I think I've seen a map online somewhere.

Classic piece, best write-up of woodson ever, in the inimitable Van Belle style. Thats my home crag and bobo is one of the original San Diego and Woodson homies. Seeing that article again brought back a million great memories. Good stuff.

It's only 11+, so he must have needed to add a weight belt.

I'm available to show someone around if your in the area. I fell under some good tutelage over the years. Drop me a message here on ST.

I recall Climbing Mag listing Woodson in a top ten bouldering area list in the nation. Undoubtedly we have a gold mine here in our backyard! Check out Mt. Woodson on YouTube for more action.

Just for the record, I think I should mention that the first Bouldering Contest in San Diego was conceived and organized by Tom Compare (not Werner Landry), who some of you will remember as the proprietor of A Striving After Wind, a mountaineering shop in Pacific Beach. Werner Landry and Rick Piggot were competitors in that first competition, which was held in Mission Gorge! My guess is that was 1971 or 1972. The finals were on the big, isolated yellow boulder upstream. Werner carried on the yearly competitions and gave it the name Great Western BC.

Bob,

Any chance you've got a good condition copy of the Feb 89 mag that your article appeared in that you'd be willing to part with (for a fee of course)?

Jon,
I've got it but I'm not sure about parting with it. Every issue of Climbing from those days was something special.
I've also thought about scanning Amick's write up of the fabled Woodson contest from R&I 5/86... it's totally priceless... but not without permission from the man his-self. Hey Gonamok, what say you?
Cripes, the same issue has Largo in welder's gloves (on guess which route) and Christian Griffith in his underwear (no, not THAT shot, another shot...there seem to be many, wtf?) Classic.
