Cartoonist R. Crumb brought us Flake Foont, Mr. Natural, Zap Comix, Fritz the Cat, Keep on Truckin', and a gazillion odd ball other things. He was always interesting and outrageous. Lately he played it straight with an illustrated Bible, of all things. Very curious guy . . .

Ah! Yes & Yes to Largo and Piton Ron!

The movie was an incredible portrait of some of the most bizare stuff I had ever seen.

R. Crumb is one "sick dude."

A bit more recently, he put out a book & CD of classic blues, jazz & country (Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Blind Willie McTell...) that's really good:

I really liked his work in the illustrated Kafka bio!

Ricky, he was / is a contenporary of Gilbert Shelton (freak bros,Wonder Warthog), Bill Grifith (Zippy the pinhead), S Clay Wilson (checker demon, cap'n pissgum, etc) and cohort as well.

He worked with Ralph Bakshi (new adventures of mighty mouse) on the Fritz the cat movies ( among other things, the first x rated toons) though I think he distanced himself from that project.

"Crumb" was the name of the film. weren't his brothers a trip?
Right around the same time (slightly before?) was the documentary, "comic book confidential" which had interviews with Shelton, Griffith, maybe even Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee, as well.

When I saw it, in Bezerkly 20 odd years ago,it was preceded by a 'no smoking in the theatre' psa (remember those?) that featured film maker John Waters...

His brother was very strange. If I remember correctly he swallowed string and let pass through his body. I am usually wrong though.
Might have been mentioned in previous posts, but Crumb also dod the Cheap Thrills album cover.

one of his brothers did the string cleansing thing,
the other brother eventually committed suicide

if there were ever an example of an artist unable and unwilling to repress their inner most feelings and thoughts at such a primal level, R. Crumb is one, a fascinating individual who somehow copes with his life, perhaps his artistic success saved him

the documentary Crumb 1994 directed by Terry Zwigoff is in the Netflix list... it is pretty amazing.

I remember going to the record store in the late 70’s, and there over there to the side of the pipe and bong section, atop the glass case would be a three copies of Freak. I had no point of reference to my small town West Coast life, but I knew Freak represented something strange, that was near and afoot. Went and saw the Genesis drawings at an art museum a month or so ago and it was a drag, I suppose in a way the sparse crowd was not conducive to my furtive glances at the more risqué verses depicting certain actions of certain women. An olding man in an art museum forgetting the thirteen year old in the head shop; nostalgia it’s a bitch.

Over the years there have been reprints of the early "Zap" ComiX available at the shops specializing in collectible comics (and ComiX). I recall seeing my then-12 year old son sitting at a picnic table in Joshua Tree laughing his a$$ off over a "comic book," when I approached the table he attempted to hide it, thinking I wouldn't approve. When I simply commented "Oh, Zap! Got any Furry Freak Brothers there too?" he breathed a big sigh of relief, and said his Mother didn't really approve of such stuff.

I always loved "Fat Freddy's Cat!"

Mr. Natural

and to tie the climbing into it I thought that Mr. Natural on the apron was about the cleanest crack i ever saw- like God split the rock and then walked away

I was reading that R. Crumb did some LSD and he said that for six months he lost his sense of his ego--He did not recommend this for others but in retrospect he felt it was a good thing for him- he said he came up with some of his most famous characters during this time.

You know, Mark? I honestly don't remember that. I wonder if I surpressd it? Sometimes I think I don't acknowledge sheiit that is too over the top (making 'CID survvable, perhaps?) I remember the knotted sheets... Maybe cause I awready knew people did that? What I remember was him saying that he "had to go see my public" ie panhandling.
My impression was that he, was the more together brother, as opposed to the der, suicidal virgin brother. But what do I know?

I remember coming out of the movie with my own brother, who described the movie as "disturbing"...

I have always loved Crumb's illustrative style, certainly the best of the era. I mostly overlook the misogynistic stuff, but I am very interested in his views of cultural and (especially) music history. Crumb is a major collector of 78rpm records, and has issued numerous compilations from his collection. The above mentioned book about old blues and jazz is a great deal at $13+, hardbound and including a great disc of stuff from the Crumb archive of recordings.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=crumb+blues&x=0&y=0

My favorite Crumb book may be Odds and Ends, which is just miscellaneous casual and commercial art jobs: small town newspaper blurbs, business cards, invitations to potluck suppers, gig announcements, portraits of favorite historical musicians, etc.

I love Robert's work, Mr. Natural and Flakey Foont some of the faves. I've got a few up in the archives that I got while in junior high (early '70s). It was new stuff back then.
The unwanted publicity from the movie "Crumb" led Robert to pack up the family and move to France.
His ability to draw his ideal fantasy version of the female form is remarkable, what a great artist.
I remember one episode where Flakey hooks up with a female sasquatch and finds life in the woods to be pretty darn good.

Riding my bike the other day, I saw Maxon walking down the street here in SF. he's the Crumb brother, who in the movie sat on a bed of nails, and pulled down the woman's pants in Safeway. what an outrageous scene that was!

he used to panhandle, sitting full lotus on the sidewalk, until he started selling his drawings 5 or 6 years ago. was the 1st time I've seen him in quite a few years now.
