What an incredible story! So sad, but yes, must be a relief of sorts. What a mystery, finally solved.

Did YOU find him, Dean? If so, how? How many times had you looked for him? Did he still have some of his camera gear on him? Shades of Mallory on Everest, eh?

Condolences to his family and friends.

Good to have closure to this, I kind of forgot that this was still unresolved.
It is hard to believe that it has been 7 years.
Thanks Cragman for the info, and condolences to his loved ones.

having recently just been up on mule pass, this was really interesting to hear about. This is indeed a special place in the Sierra to rest.

Reminds me of the book I read about Randy Morgenson, the Ranger that went missing in Kings Canyon in 96. Glad to hear his wife has some closure for sure. Props to you for continuing the search over the years. That is a big haystack indeed.

Good news Dean. I remember this search. It seems to me that the Sierra takes a few people each year and seemingly swallows them whole. It is very good news that this man gets to go home.

Needle in a haystack doesn't even describe this type of search. Sometimes you don't even get an itinerary, just a dusty car at the trailhead.

Excellent link Dean.

Thanks for all your work. Wow, SuperT made it on TV!

So sad that the beautiful places we love so much have to be such a harsh mistress. But we love her no less, maybe even more, because of it.

Wow, this is definitly closure. We were backpacking in the Hoover Wilderness when the search began. Two of our team members spoke to Fred at the base of Burrow Pass, and we did not know he was the reason the search began. We made contact 3 days later with Mono County SAR, who in turn had us contact John Dill with YOSAR. The story is now over.

Wow.. amazing he was found at all in such a vast wilderness area. I'm happy his family has closure as well.

These tales where people walk off and disappear seem like they would be very difficult for family members. They had a recent one here in the local Santa Monicas where they finally found a gentleman's remains. He went hiking like ... 7 years ago and was never found until last month- and that was in a significantly smaller, less rugged, well-traveled local mountain range. I also always wonder about that park ranger up at Devil's Punchbowl who vanished on patrol about 10 years ago and was never found. I had a co-worker who's dad took a walk in Death Valley 30 years ago when she was a child and was never seen again. It has had a profound impact on her life (in a negative way).. just not knowing what happened can mess with you.

Condolences to all those families.

I agree with everyone here. I am happy to finally see closer for this family. It must be such a relief to finally know and have the opportunity to bring him home.
