An interesting, interview-based historical overview of this urban crag. From Climbing November-December 1981.

I think I did this before; the photo is reversed; here it is correctly shown. This is the Great Overhang in all its 16 feet of splendor.

A very long list of climbers that got their start there. Be it ever so humble, it's rock!

Neat-o. I learned how to climb @ rifle @ Indian Rock. I can still feel the sheen... Altman would lurk around and bag us on hideous thumb problems, eliminates, sideways acrobatics, etc. Lots of nice sunsets up there.

Just as amazing to me is Nat's Traverse from '76 right up the block. Remains a highlight in my bouldering, still not sure I've pimped harder, even though it is really a "route".. Kind of a different flavor, dark and dank, that Mortar Rock....

Never got around to the other hards "Triple Crown" at Grizzly Peak and Remillard. Not quite as aesthetic as Nat's.

If you never heard of the guy....

I think we did this on an earlier thread but the first image was reversed by the publisher to make a better plate I assume. It is the start of the Great Overhang. Here is the image correctly shown:

I remember a time when Tom Higgins returned from climbing and bouldering in Colorado. Some of his time was spent trying to do routes that were put up by someone named John Gill. We knew how good Tom was and he said the problems there were REALLY hard.

Another story of the mythical Mr. Gill for us kids at Indian Rock.

I don't remember exactly when this happened, early 70s I guess.

The weather in Berkeley is usually pretty good, not muggy very often. The rock is hella slippery though when holds are used for a couple of generations.

Fred, I remember Tom's return as well, and the almost mythical status in which we held jgill. I particularly remember our trying to determine what a B2 would be like. Ben Borson thought one variation of Watercourse left, involving a swinging lieback, might qualify, but he wasn't sure if John Gill would think it so. We had no candidates for a B3.

It continues to delight me that John posts so regularly on ST.
