A few years back, Tarbuster rambled out to New Hampshire.

While Lisa prepared to race Mt. Washington, Tarbuster and Cowpoke and I enjoyed a fine day on Cathedral Ledge.

My travels take me to the Rockies, now and then.
A year later when I drifted through town, Tarbuster and I dodged the summer heat up on Fantasy Ridge.

I met the Cozmic Banditos, along with Crimpie & Dave, Philo, Goatboy, Snakefoot, Ray & other Boulder crew at a swell Flagstaff party.

And then a year after that, Tarbuster, Crimpie, Mike Munger and I romped up Redgarden.
Crimpie & Mike romped faster, zooming up Alice in Bucketland while Tarbuster & I strolled Ruper.

I think the last time I had climbed this route was with Warren Harding. Really.

I wonder how well a voice-recognition program like Dragon Naturally Speaking would work for things like the SuperTopo forum? It seems quite effective, and is hands-free, though it must take a little training and practice. It wouldn't help with scanning and posting photos, which is fairly manual, but should allow posting with little if any use of the arms.

Anyway, nice to see some photos of Roy, and hear that he's still getting at it.

In the tradition of all those adventures from years gone by, Roy and I agreed we ought to climb something when I briefly visited Colorado last week. For different reasons, we both prepared by doing pretty much nothing.

As a professional desk jockey, doing nothing comes easy to me. Straight off the couch it would be. Doing nothing comes less naturally for Tarbuster, but he was determined.

So what should we climb? Hardly anything seemed easy enough.

As he and I talked over possible objectives for broken-down climbers ...

Cob Rock? (groan)

... Tarbuster suggested a scheme of brilliant comfort.

Lisa and her friend Sherrie would train Saturday by running down and up Mt. Evans a few times.
If Tarbuster and I could manage to climb the mountain, we would find a car waiting for us on the summit.

I know a great plan when I hear one.

Hiking up, we became aware that another party had reached the base of our chosen route, but was not moving quickly to climb it.

And there was a second party approaching below us, who appeared to be stepping up their pace.
The pincer predicament that defines modern climbing.

After one look at our pursuers, Tarbuster left his wheezing partner behind and dashed ahead to stake our claim to the next likely route.

Nice looking piece of stone!

BITD guiding together in the Meadows Roy came up with a set of Ninga (barbie-type) dolls to demonstrate to newcomers how the whole leading, anchors, following scene worked. We had a hilarious few days staging the situation - and then came the demo for a Go Climb A Rock class.

As I remember it was out on Pothole Dome. We jumped into our roles, the dolls performed perfectly (it was a bit like a puppet show) and .... Silence.

The whole class thought we were out-of-our-minds. They actually got a bit offended. We were dumbfounded. Crestfallen.

Oops!

Great stuff!

Chatted with Roy a bit yesterday...it was good to catch up.

This style of TR I shall hence forth refer to as "Chiloe style".

Funny, that you and Roy have similar TR styles...Roy even posted these related tips a couple years back:

You must persevere to row your little boat through the scwhag & choss and continue to plant your flag on the victorious beachhead of the front page...

And yes you have to be cagey and employ tactics:

break up your story, nice bite-size pieces, and installments or whatever…
but don't let things go too long, in sales this is called “letting a lead go cold”
leave room for questions; when people ask a question that bumps your thread!
answer questions quickly, in real time if possible, keeping that personal touch (trick = biscuit)
wait till your thread just hinges on the abyss of the second page, then post post post
always try to nab the top of the 20 post segment: it's your ship, steady at the helm!!!

Blatant tactics to avoid:

creating a pseudonym, or bogus avatar to bump your own show
e-mailing buddies to help bump things, er, um this is kind of a gray area
(I’ve done it, once maybe twice, heh, but a good sport does this very sparingly, usually begging particular content)

While Tarbuster and I were walking up the hill, Lisa and Sherrie had been running.

I'll get the distances wrong but in spirit Lisa's morning went something like this:

Park on the summit, run downhill to the 3.5 mile mark.
Run back up to the summit.
Run downhill to the 2.5 mile mark.
Run back up to the summit.
Run downhill to the 1.5 mile mark.
Run back up to the summit.
Walk across the ridge to meet climber guys, after running about 15 miles above 13,000 feet.

In post #38 here, Fuzzywuzzy speaks openly for the first time regarding the secret legend of the Ninja Barbie Tribe of Tarbuster---- how he used them as aids in teaching basic climbing process and----of course it also has to be assumed---fashion.

As the years wore on in the Meadows, however, they grew up. These Barbies grew up and became as all cute and cuddly things do, just simply too big. It was at least off-putting for many in the basic rockclimbing classes although the advanced students had usually gotten to the point where they understood that higher level climbing actually does in fact require special powers of cuteness, and that such powers are not to be denied lest one flat-out fail.

But as time wore on of course, some did escape, these Barbies, and as we say in computerland, "went wild". Here is one that Tarbaby actually was able to photograph in its native habitat. I think its name was Craig although there was some confusion as to outfits that day.

Jeepers, no rest for the weary amongst you lot !!!
A guy who can’t even *lurk* find his ears burning…

Okay then.
In reference to Peter H’s reference to Fuzzywuzzy’s disclosure regarding the "Secret Legend of the 80's Ninja Barbie Tribe of Tarbuster" :

YES.

Mr. Carter and I, while guiding, solely in the interest of brevity and clarity I assure you, did employ the discrete positioning of dolls smack in front of our much bemused clients (broad daylight too).

And for their own damn good.
Sadly to no avail.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s how it went, starting with our interrogation, after the fact, upon return to the mountaineering school:

Vern
Have you lost your mind Carter?
Pasting dolls up on the rock in front of your clients?
Knowing you … we are talking *blowup dolls* …

Tommy Herbert
(blushing)

Carter
Well Vern, first Royo and I thought about grabbing some monkeys, orangutans, or even guerrillas from the zoo … and … nevermind … anyhow, the dolls were a great idea; brilliant really … or so we thought.

The clients were after all remorselessly un-humored … just didn’t look into it with much curiosity, or very closely.

-----------------------------------------------

Exhibit number one,
The dolls in action, as seen from the client’s perspective:

Exhibit number two,
The dolls, up close:

----------------------------------------------------

Oh well,
Nowadays things are different.
(notwithstanding that one “Craig” doll, the experimental one, still prancing about in the tutu I’m sure).

Otherwise it’s just me and my buddies in our golden age, nursing our various infirmities astride low-slung slabs in high places, in shameless proximity to any mode of artificial transportation whatsoever:

… While the beauties run circles around-and-up-and-down any and all summits near and far:

And we leave the genuine ape hanging to the beasts:

The end.

You all have a nice time together here in cyberspace.
And if you go outside take lots of pictures.

I'm shutting down my computer 'till some way-back-to-the-future-time, resuming my Epson salt foot bath, ice packs, and throat lozenges.

Keep those postcards coming!

Yours,
Tarbaby

Clearly Roy is holding out, Fuzz. It just is so plain. The ole “keepaway” game we used to play as children. The REAL figures are still being withheld and we are supposed to be content with---what---rubber???

But perhaps you missed something here. On my computer and giant monitor, zooming in, this is what I found using the special powers of Creative Suite 5.5 (beta). It still is really exciting as we see hints of, vestiges of, Tarb’s arcane sense of fashion and general joie de vivre, inadvertently left behind in his haste to post up just now. I think these two, although rubber, weren't so badly turned out that day:

Later that day, up comes this "Bags Found at the Base of Stately Pleasure Dome" thread, with two shots of the booty, so to speak:

One can only imagine how the two fierce climbers could have overlooked their equipment, brightly colored as it is. No one ever came to claim these artifacts though although T-boy got his start with them in his variously named lines of High End Handbags, which even today he still hoards, issuing all manner of mock-deadly threats upon the Western Bloc.
