Rappel on ropes of different diameters

I have questions regarding rappelling using ropes of different diameters. In alpine setting, in order to save weight, I read about Steve House, Kevin Mahoney and others using a dynamic rope and a 6-mm cord for rappelling.


Can someone show how it is done?

1. Do you rappel on both strands? Or, do you rappel on the climbing rope in the set up as shown in the Figure below?
2. What kind of knot do you use to connect the rope and the cord, say, a 9-mm rope and a 6-mm cord?
