A few friends are planning to go hiking this summer. Need a daypack that can hold my camera, water bottle, map, candy bars, etc. I don’t want a regular backpack and a rucksack would be too big for my needs. Something outdoorsy, but not a full rucksack is what I need.

Selecting the correct day pack is absolutely essential to assure your survival while visiting the great outdoors.

Weld_It may have some good ideas about which daypack. Something around 60 litres, maybe?

I use a Osprey Stratos 18. At first I thought too big, but it fits so well and is so lite that I got it. Glad I did. I use it for all kinds of stuff. Aside from camera, cliff bars, and water, it also holds a lite jacket and rain gear. Even a place for the car keys :-)

Cosmic, that pack may a little more technical than the O.P. requires. Does anyone really need a holographic projector integrated into their pack? Unless, that is, you are going to do something gnarly like blow up a Death Star or something.

This last weekend I became liberated from packs for a day... first time in ages on an all-day climb w/o a pack... just 1L water clipped to harness or gear sling, and a vest with zip pockets for gu and bars and bagels, headlamps, ninja capilene hat, and space blanket "just in case."
It was wonderful groveling up chimneys w/o a pack on a leash hanging off my waist!
So consider just a light jacket or vest with big zipper pockets, and a sling for dangling water, and camera on a strap.

Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I just love this forum. A few observations – I like the Ozone bag, but it looks rather large for a daypack. I think it’s more on the lines of a rucksack. The Cilo Gear WorkSack also looks too big to carry on day trips. The FUL Freebird backpack is the ideal size, but doesn’t look very sturdy and the one suggested by Cosmiccragsman is a little over the top for me. The Osprey Stratos 18 pack looks interesting. I’ll try and find out more about the bag.

But didn't you see that the FUL Freebird had "Rugged Branded zipper pulls?"

Jaybro, that looks like a cool bag. Randy, if you like the Osprey Stratos 18 pack, you may also like the Excursion backpack (http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=Excursion-Backpack_BP118) from Briggs & Riley’s new outdoor luggage collection BRX. It’s the ideal size for a daypack and it’s got more capacity (1391 cu. in.) than the Stratos 18 pack (1,100 cu. in.) plus loads of pockets including one for a laptop.

The right fanny pack will have room for a 1 liter water bottle, bars, map, camera, and of course LED headlamp. Maybe even a tiny windbreaker. When you add more clothing that you can't tie around your waist, or a larger water bottle, then you might want a mini daypack.
