You haven't been 4 wheeling until you've gotten stuck. Congratulations. haha.. You don't carry a self rescue kit? A come along and a hi-lift jack are about all you need. Plus a shovel and maybe a tow strap.

Shoot, jack up the axle, put the planks under the tires, and drive out. Saves you a few bucks. And yes, I loved my toyota for how tough it was.

Yep, once you are use to it, you just laugh it off. Of course it helps if you didn't break anything and it helps that you had triple A. That makes it easier to laugh. Glad the guy was nice and knew what he was doing.
Blocks of wood do help. In your case, with a shovel. You put a plank under the jack. Jack the axle up. Shovel some dirt under the tires. Let the jack down, Put another plank under the jack and jack it back up and put more dirt or rocks under the tires until you have it high enough. Works like a charm, as long as the dirt is loose so you can shovel it, or their are rocks, or you have blocks of wood. Even a spare tire can be used under a tire to gain clearance. But thats a LOT! of work and triple A is easier.. haha.. Hi lift jacks are great. You can even use them like a come along. Though that can be tedious. But if you are stuck and its a long way from anywhere, well. You do what you have to do.
Edit: You should have seen me this winter when I slid off the road down a hill into a deep snowbank. Had to jack the back tire up to get the chains on. Had to put a strap on the truck so it wouldn't slide further down the hill while I was jacking it up. With all the shoveling, it took me about 2 hours. But I don't have triple A, so I save myself at least 100 bucks.

Hi-lifts are nice (and do make a nice makeshift come-a-long) but fairly useless (please correct me if I am wrong) if the truck lacks rocker panels or hi-lift "compatible" bumpers for jacking, though the wheel lifters in conjunction with a hi-lift do work nicely!
Toyota trucks are tough! A proud owner as well!

279K hard miles on mine, and counting. Been stuck plenty of times, but nothing I couldn't figure out on my own. Come along was one of the first purchases. I'm gonna be so sad when that truck finally craps out. Maybe I'll just throw a new engine in when the time comes. I mean, where else am I gonna listen to my old cassettes?

I understand TR, It can suck when the weather is bad. I live in the mountains and carry severe weather gear for when I get stuck, but I still piss and moan when its sleeting and hailing and your hands are freezing. I also carry extra pairs of gloves and hand warmers for just such occasions. But then I hate spending money on a tow, so I have spent a fair amount of time getting unstuck. Plus I have been in places where a tow truck wouldn't come out. And I use to go by myself. So no choice but to deal with it.
Lithium, they have gadgets that attach a hi lift to rounded bumpers, and there is a device for attaching it to wheels for side lift. I have used a strap attached to the frame for a side lift when there wasn't room to lift the wheel. You can still mess up body panels, but sometimes that is less important then getting unstuck. When your truck is in danger of rolling down a hillside, you stop caring about things like bent body panels and start trying to jury rig whatever you need. If you are in that situation though, you have likely devoted your vehicle to 4 wheeling and have added the necessary attachment points.
Of course when I first started wheelin, we got ourselves into some serious messes pretty quickly and didn't have the best gear. haha..It is amazing how fast you can get yourself into a jam. Sidehills are my nemesis. No more for me, as I am too poor to fix a broken truck and don't have a serious rig anymore anyways. Now I turn back before things get very wild.
here is a video as the extras they sell. I don't recommend the base. A piece of wood with a bolt in it works better.

on my digs out on the coconino, i've got one of those '70's shuttle busses we all rode around in... the one with the matching trailer. midship stairs with the bi-fold doors, huge picture windows. it makes a wonderful sunroom when the wind is blowing cold. i tugged it nearly into position with my tow truck since it has no back axle. the engine is gone and the front axle needs to be returned to the seller.
trouble is, i want it snugged right up to a big juniper to perfect the framing of the view of the san fran peaks, but the gap left by the absented tow rig called for solution. i have a long cable threaded thru the tree, but the rocky side hill and no rear axle problem will have to be overcome by inserting a uniquely dimensioned A-frame in the gap such that back end will arc up and over, landing in place. then the leveling can begin, four (stone) masonry pylons constructed, tie downs rigged, and hearth* fashioned in place of the engine cover.
five of the benches are enjoying a second career, in a ring around the fire pit. according to the whims of the smoke, relief is found by sliding from seat to seat.
for old times sake, throw a coiled rope down on the fiberglass, follow it up with the thump of a loaded rucksack, the slap of the buckles. yup, exactly as remembered from the glory days, watching the walls roll by through the forest picket, slumped in a heap after slugging it out in on a ten pitch bout
*rocket stove, a really cool, i mean hot technology. google it!

I have a '86 4X4 that I take virtually everywhere! Even did the camo job myself!! I also have a High Lift Jack, Come-along, Shovels, Tow-Straps, and even Sand Rails for the Dunes here at the beach in Oregon...Mostly used this stuff for rescuing others that I come along...But that's just good Karma!:) Even including a shot of my Cam'O'Lantern that I painted for Halloween with the same stencil (from Stencilease.com) that I used for my truck, Ha Ha! Peace and good off-roading T*R!!!

We got the Lesbaru stuck at our secret camping spot once on a Smith trip when it rained and we thought we could 4 x 4 over slick rock to get out...uhhh, nope.
The fully chained up tow truck which showed up to tow us, a 4 x 4 itself, got stuck. The tow truck that the tow truck called could have got stock too, but he was savy and set his hooks and ran a tow rope @ 100 feet to the stuck tow truck, who finally got out and then they both got us out.

trade that high lift in for a proper fence stretcher ... kidding,eh? what you really want is an air bladder inflated by the compressor
made from your decommissioned air conditioner. coupla slide rails under the chassis can be handy.
crack a cold one, sit back and savor the sound of goodbye to jacking and cribbing

1/2 ton truck 7 miles to 384 K, 1st problem, a starter, at 175K.
Previa Van 28k to 172k still running perfectly, replaced a starter and a wire harness.
Sequoia 11 k to 38k rt front speaker replaced. orther than that, flawless.
Tundra 3 miles to 177k, recalled the ball joints, other than that all toyota paid issue, 0 problems, perfect every time.
Toyotas have more free running clearance underneath the axle. look at ford or gm products, brake lines hanging below the axle YIKES!! hook yer stump on That!

I have seen the inflatable jacks before...Cost comparison first...
Hi-Lift Jack: $49.95
Inflatable Jack: $249.95
Plus with the Hi-Lift Jack engaged you can drive right off of it, as I've done many times. Most recently while High Centered on Fallen log...

I have a small list of things I miss in America. One is my Toyota which is sitting in storage all safe and sound.
I think once I get back to the states I'm converting my trailer into an office and will work from the road. it's working in India/Thailand so I might as well make it work on the mainland.

Not a truck but still a Toyota and a good story
A 1993 Toyota corolla saved my life on october 30th 2011
It was a dark, story and rainy night in seattle some dude merged into me and I swerved overcorrected and put the car into a spin, spun out across several lanes of traffic and hit the wall going 60 MPH. I walked away without injury. The car got totaled (the front end hit the wall straight on). I feel very lucky to be alive.
