There are a bunch, and prices differ by as much as $20 sometimes. Anyone have favorites?

I'm from California, so keep that in mind. I want good rubber (C4) and just need half soles, but want to send like 3 pairs in. So... what'cha ya got?

The Rubber Room in Bishop does stellar work.

They are professionals and it shows.

Highly recommended.

Call them they have an 800 number and are very friendly.

I agree Rubber Room is the best. If you live in the Bay Area Marmot in Berkeley does a fairly good job. They do 1/2 soles of C4, slightly cheaper than RR and you don't have to deal with mailing your shoes.

I've always been happy with the work they do and after years of hearing various people complain about marmot and rubber room, I'm not likely to change from what I've always liked.

good luck!

my rule has usually been to buy shoes if I find a brand name for under $50. It happens, not often, but it does. So paying $40 is alright, but paying $35 is better, and it seems like the more you do at once the cheaper because the shipping is more cost effective. RR is good, but the most expensive. I saw free shipping... that caught my eye! But I know, people gotta make a living too so I gotta support their trade. Thanks! Any other suggestions/opinions are welcome! Medusa... I'll be at Malibu Crk. Saturday!

Evolv will only do their own rubber (makes sense) so if you don't mind trax, they can hook you up for like 25 bucks. Cheap resole, and the mythos I have been climbing on they did a FANTASTIC job.

Pat in Joshua Tree is also picking up resoles outta Nomad Ventures, I don't have any experience with him, but he's been in the business lotta years, and is a really REALLY cool dude.

I've used dave page for hiking boots- a pair of the original la sportiva makalus. Fifteen year old boots cam back good as new - or better because he put the sole on that allows a step in crampon.

I've used Barry's- again excellent work by barry.

Since I live in Bishop, I use the rubber room exclusively now. Their work is very good. They have a lot of options for rubber, but my Yosemite formed brain just wants stealth.

I go through a lot of resoles, four or five resoles a pair usually. They are never as good as new, but the Rubber room gets them close as you can get.

The trick is to turn them in before the rand starts to go. I rarely have that much discipline, but that's the trick to prolonging the life of your shoes.

I still climb from time to time in blue Kaukulators that the Rubber Room keeps breathing new life into.

I go through a lot of resoles- one or two a year. I blame the Buttermilk rock and lots of climbing, not the resole job. They have to deal with what I give them.

I have had problems with the rubber room since thier move. I used wheeler & wilson - wilson's east side - now the rubber room - first 25 years great - last 3 years not so good. I find that resoling by someone that knows what they are doing in no way harms the shoe & I have shoes that have been resole more than 5 times - still fit well - never had resoles ware faster.

We have also had some bad resoles from Rubber Room: delam, and one pair where they ground right through the (previously completely intact and barely worn) rand at the tip, a bad spot to do that; same problems as reported by others, so there is a certain percentage of flat out bad work coming out. Some years back (original location) I had a couple of very good resole jobs from them, but since then it appears that quality is unreliable. So we send shoes to the Cobbler and Cordwainer in New York (www.cobcord.com), haven't had a lemon yet in 10-15 resoles.

I would take boots or sandals to Dave Page but I won't use him for rock shoes again and I work walking distance from his shop...its not really a rock shoe operation anymore they have one guy who comes in on the weekend and does them and the quality is inconsistent at best.

Ramuta's ( http://www.ramutasresoles.com/ ) formerly of seattle now of Montana gets my shoes. It is run by a climber who grew up working in a family owned shoe repair shop. 30 bucks for a half sole 6 for a rand patch, never had a rand patch fail though I tend to send in my shoes before they need one. Never had a resole delaminate ... better then the stock glue job on sportivas.

I am also a proponent of the "let the resole cure for a couple of weeks before using" method locker once exposed.

Is Pat in addition to Locker, or did I miss something and Locker is no longer resoling?

I've had great resoles from Locker.
I had a hideous experience with Yosemite Bum several years back, have never gone back.

I haven't tried the Rubber Room in the last 5 or 6 years so can't comment. I heard a rumour that there now is a resoler in San Diego. Can anyone confirm that?

I've never had a delam problem with the Rubber Room. I use them at least twice a year.

As for shoes being resoled over five times, it depends on the shoe and the damage to the shoe. Where's locker? He knows the ins and outs.

My five ten ascents (my favorite shoe) were done after two resoles. I think that was because the toe box stretches- they'd just get too sloppy.

My Kauks- I have no idea how many resoles they've had.

While I agree with Werner that it's not that hard to do your own, now that I've joined the plutocracy, it takes too long.

I've used Barry partly because he's relatively close by ( 35-minute drive or less [if the cops aren't looking]), but mainly because he does such good work. I can't compare him to other contemporary re-solers, because I haven't used any others. In any case, not only his re-soling, but his general repairs are excellent. One of my pairs he's helped keep alive are ten-year-old Huecos that are still my favorites for long climbs.

I'll add a thumbs-up for Locker. He did a good job on the one pair I sent him. Fast turnaround and fair price.

Locally (Seattle) I used Ramuta for a long time. His parents' shoe repair shop is a block from my office so pick-up and drop-off was easy, but the main thing was that he did excellent work. Posts upthread indicate he's moved to Montana, but I expect that hasn't affected the quality of his work.

I'll throw in a plug for Rubber Room also. I've had a number of pairs done, their work is superb and they are a pleasure to work with. They are ALMOST as good as Jules (sp.?) who I used to use, I think the name was Red Rock Resoles. She was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident; just wanted to point out that she was the goddess of resoles. Her work was perfect; an art form...plus she put a Jolly Rancher in each shoe!

Serious, though...I've miss Jules dearly, but Rubber Room has been fantastic.

Over the last 30 years I've used most of the above mention resolers, some used to be great but aren't what they use to be. The only place I would recommend wholeheartedly now is Mad Rock in Industry, CA, I think the guys name is Arturo. They aren't my favorite shoes but the new rubber they resole with, which by the way is not even offered yet on their shoes, is the best I've ever used. The craftsmanship is awesome, they are super quick and charge $15. The guy predominately does warranty work and isn't super busy.

35+ years of resoling 2-5 per shoe (ignore the fact I only climb once a year, the shoe on the wooden leg takes a real beating)

Barry's - tx to the taco, just used him recently, got about a year in on my all day shoe now, best looking job I've ever seen, awesome attention to detail, he seems to do every pair like his own, being fat old and lazy (me, not Barry), I'll probably use him for all my future pairs since it's true that as you get older you become more conservative (aka lazy) and go with what works.

Komito's - excellent work - best green shoenard resole ever, all others no prob - and you would often get a note from the legend himself(hmmm what FA was Komito known for?)

Wheeler-Wilson to Rubber Room - used to have no complaints, last two resoles delammed, one within about a week, but as jaybro knows, my foot work sucks (hmmm, no suggestions from Barry though ;-)

Doityourself Dude - he sucked, fired that f'er after one pair, got glue everywhere, destroyed a nice grinding wheel, hosed the boot

Lots of other single dirt bags - some gud, some not

Locker - sorry man, can't say as haven't tried you yet but when searching for a new cobbler to try, it was down to Barry and Locker based on the scientific method known as surfing the taco... Both cobblers seemed to have about an equal number of rabid supporters and no dings. The mint won me over. (not that I'd ever put anything in my mouth that's been near a pr of my used shoes) If I ever go to JT, I'll have to lock a pr down.

Over last two years I have sent several pairs (La Sportiva Mythos) to Rubber Room in Bishop for resole. I have not been happy with the quality of repair (half sole) - sometimes the tips have a lot of old rubber just glued over, which makes the shoes difficult to use in narrow cracks. Often the shoes unglued and they lasted less than ~3months. I am looking for a better place.

I use Rock and Resole now, they're less expensive and the 3 resoles I've had them do for me, the shoes looked as good or better than new when I got them back. Plus they're way faster; one time I mailed my shoes on a Monday and got them back that Friday (from California!)

Had my Mythos 1/2 sole done at The Rubber Room about a year ago. Came back with 1/8" unlaminated (no reason to believe that it was laminated in the first place) all the way around the toe on both shoes. Was easy to fix with Barge Cement, portable electric room heater, duct tape and clamps. Haven't had any problems since. For that kind of money, you'd think that they would inspect their work before they ship it back to a customer.

I just picked up 2 pair of La Sportiva Mariacher's from Rock and Resole in Boulder. The initial appearance is very good. I'll report back after use.

I've also used Komito Boots in the past. O.K. with Steve's results, too.

Just got 2 more perfect resoles back from Barry. Custom touches just as I asked, and for the rest, I trust the advice of the shoe doc. Never let me down yet.

To expand on that, I've never seen a better job on the resole than rock and resole in boulder. Quick as hell too. My roommate and I sent in a box with like 7 pairs. All sorts of weird order stuff. Got em all back in about a week and a half which means they must have done our resoling the day they got the box from california, and then rung up our credit cards, and sent them back the next day. I couldn't believe their work. I had c4 put on a pair of acopa spectres. What a shoe! My roommate went and freed the salathe with spaz and hayden kennedy on their resoles right after that.
That being said, next time I have a resole, I'm going to send them to Brian because he's become my friend in the last year, and I've seen him work in his garage and he definitely knows what he's doing and takes good care of his customers.

So, Barry seems to come well recommended, but I can't seem to get very much from searching other than a number and address. Does anyone know if I need to fill out some kind of form with the shoes and to that end where might I obtain said form?

What Locker said.

Chatting with Barry is one of the nice fringe benefits of getting your resoles done there. His work and resole advice are the best.

I was quite happy with Positive Resoles, but after Locker closed his shop in Jtree, I sent a couple pairs to the Rubber Room. Disappointed with their work, I gave Barry a call... what a nice guy! I got my shoes back in about two weeks and can honestly say that they are better than new! Barry is a real craftsman and is personally interested in making sure that his customers get what they want.

Flyn Brian does a really good job. Honest, won't tell you that you need something that you don't, does a great job on "beefing" up approach shoes for wall climbing, and knows how a climbing shoes is supposed to fit. I take him new shoes that are sometimes not right, he re-cuts and sands them to make the edge right. Really solid work.

I'm not a fan of The Rubber Room. In the past I had lots of issues with immediate delamination. Evidently this is less common now.

I've used Locker for the past few years and his resoles rock. Now that he's out of the loop, I used the Rubber Room out of desperation last time. The resole is holding up fine (for once) but sheesh... expensive and they didn't return my shoes for almost two months so never again.

My next pair is probably going to Pat Dennis/Nomads. I have several partners giving him rave reviews and are really happy with his resoles.

Post up when you are up and running Locker.

Edit to add: My next resole is actually going to Sole Performance in Encinitas since I have a free resole coupon. Anyone used them? Opinions?

I just had a pair of boots resoled by Steve Komito, and he did a great job. Very quick turnaround, and very nice finish work.

I've done my own forever.

Once you get it down it only takes about half an hour. BUT, you will destroy the first pair you attempt to do.

In fact I've only paid someone else to do them once in 40 years (other than Mt. boots). That was a pair of Kakulators that Locker declined to re-rand so I had the Rubber Room do them. The complete re-rand job had them looking like new, but on the second resole there's some minor de-lamination on one at the toe. (easy to fix, but shouldn't have happened.)

Hey Locker, once you get set up I need to buy some rubber from you.

I'm down to one half-sole's worth of slipper rubber. When 5.10 changed their packaging I ran around to every Sport Chalet and REI in the area and bought a few years worth of the old style kits. I'm finally out.

IF! you can find the 5.10 resole kits they are now die cut and you can only get one resole instead of three out of a package.

Rubber Room Update - April 13, I wrote about Mythos resole that came back with 1/8" unattached all the way around the toe. Was heading out on a trip, so I Barge cemented them which lasted fine for 6 months. Over the following 9 months the edge delamination progressed to 1/2" with rand exposed.
>
I chatted w/Tony at RR who said that they had problems with bonding Vibram XS at first and now have supply issues, so he did Stealth C4 resoles on warranty. Came back lookin' great.
>
I'm impressed that he backed up a defective job after 15 months in the field. If these hold up, I'll definitely use him again.

I live in California and only resole at two places--both out of state but cheap and fast...

Rock n' Resole (Boulder, CO)

Dave Cobbler (Seattle, WA)

does everything! not just climbing shoes

good luck!

Ditto everything Zeta mentioned ....

Had Dave Cobbler do some Vasque Hiking boots I bought at an REI used gear sale. They came out like new. Got them for 12.00 and he rebuilt them like new. I've been hiking all over the place on these for two years now.

Also, have used Rock and Resole twice ... they resoled my 5.10 coyotes and they've lasted longer than the factory rubber.

Recently had them re-do my Evolve Defy's pesky hole in the rand near the toe. i think this might be a design flaw in this shoe because it also happened on my friends shoe and it appears Evolv may have redesigned a thicker rand in the VTR Defy shoe. Anyhow, it cost me more than I expected to get these resoled but they did a beautiful job and probably better than factory (had C4 rubber put on it) anyway we gym climb at least 3 times a week so I need a thicker rubber on there.

Hope this helps you.

Yosemite Bum resole does a good job and their prices are competative I think. Gdavis mentioned the same place a few posts back, it is part of the Evolv factory in Buena Park. They will use other rubber besides theirs, but you have to send it to them with your shoes and they will discount $7.00 of the bill.

Had a chance to chat with Barry on the phone for a spell this afternoon, and I just wanted to say that he is one seriously nice fella. Can't wait to see how my shoes turn out, but customer service has been A+ thus far.
