A tough day for the nesting pair of Killdeer on our ranchette.

They have been nesting on the upper part of our ranchette for years on exposed gravel left over from the Lake Bonneville flood.

After a few weeks of protecting their ground level nest, the eggs usually dissapear.

The 4 eggs are at upper left/center.

A Killdeer parent protecting the nest by pretending to be wounded & thus drawing a predator from the eggs.

It didn't work again this year. The nest was empty yesterday.

Heidi at upper left & the very large snake trail that went to the Killdeer nest. It was likely a large Gopher Snake.
