Funny Modesto story. There are a few very large +billion$ companies based there, such as EJ Gallo and Savemart. I worked with one of them for years. The President of my company was based on the east coast, long time Philly boy, big city sort of guy, very urbane.

But this was a big customer of ours and the topic of Modesto came up in many-a-meeting.

One day he was brought out for the Senior Executive sponsor meeting. As we're driving from San Francisco out through the heartland he became increasingly agitated.

"Where are we GOING?!"

Finally, we get to Modesto, with much fanfare, driving from the West through the Mexican side of town. We get to 'downtown' where he was going to stay at the (then) new Red Lion.

"This is Modesto?!" He asked incredulously. He scoffed.

"I thought this was a CITY. It's nothing but a town. Why would anyone want to have a company HERE?"

The meeting went well though. Bernie was an entrepreneur who built a 500-person shop from two people. The owner of the Modesto company did the same, and so these guys got on famously.

I still laugh about the Modesto comment though.

When Modesto was founded in 1870, it was to be named Ralston after financier William C. Ralston. Ralston's modesty prompted him to ask that another name be found, and the town was named Modesto in recognition of his modesty.

It was good enough for Robbins, dammit!

Mouse I lived in Modesto off Coffee Ave. for years and my eldest daughter was born there.

I never heard that Ralston story before, thanks.

Of course there are some beauties there too, like this 1939 Bucker Jungmeister. I like the drip tray, you could eat off it. The owner told me this one gets flown several times a year.
