Ha! We were on a river trip in Alaska and found a nice sandy beach to camp on.
After getting camp set up we went for a wee walkabout after checking
our weaponry. This was serious grizz country. We climbed up the steep bank
and found a huge cottonwood, three times the diameter of your pic, nibbled
down to the same state and looming over our campsite. I wasn't going to bed
with that there so I went back for the axe to finish the job. The beavers
expressed their severe displeasure by tail slapping all flipping night 40'
from our tent!

ps
If you’ve never heard tail-slapping think of 20 ga shotguns going off all night 40’ away!

Reilly: That beaver-tail slapping fun escalates to the next-level, when they get more pissed & swim up close hissing & growling. That happened to me twice in the 1990's, when I was doing my best to master the arcane sport of night-time fly-fishing.

When I took fishing seriously, I caught an occasional night-time large fish by throwing my large fly at splash noises. When I took a bottle of wine along, I'd get frustrated with losing flies on everything from fish to nearby bushes, & the damn wine would all evaporate.

Here's the largest beaver-chewed cottonwood I've decided to not camp under recently.

A famous question in Norway is "Hvor var du da Oddvar Brå brakk staven?" (Where were you when Oddvar Brå broke his ski pole?). It happened during the ski relay in WM, Holmenkollen, Oslo, the 23th of February 1982.

I was there, but not in the right place. I didn't see it, though I heard it. It happened nearby.

They shared the 1st price with their teams. Today the Russian team would have been winners all alone.
