Cragar: Late July on the Middle Fork Salmon. There are some smallish hot springs just upstream that likely green things up a bit on the river rocks, but the water is close to pristine.

Hey Fritz! Nice, that'd be the Salmon trip I'd be into. I have done the Main in jetboats for fire thingers and it's coo n'all but...hey, if you are into NatGeo, look for a July 1936 copy and check out the article on the Main. It is an great article that has a necessary twang to it that you'll understand as I think you are a River of no Return'r type eh?

Cragar: I fell into a job guiding on the Middle Fork Salmon, with absolutely no boating experience, in 1972. I learned to love that river, but only guided one summer before moving on to running an outdoor shop in Moscow ID in 1973. We used to be able to snag a private trip on the Middle Fork every 3 or 4 years from 1985 - 2012, when I had my 40th anniversary float on it. The river keeps getting tougher due to new rapids that result from fires & it keeps getting harder to win a permit in the river lottery.

Here's a link to our 2012 Middle Fork trip report on the NRS Duct tape diaries site. http://community.nrs.com/duct-tape/2012/11/29/middle-fork-anniversary/

The Main Salmon is a lot of fun too, but not quite as much fun as the Middle Fork. I floated it for about the 5th time this summer.
