What you see in the photo is a "pitch lap", the tool used for polishing optical glass, with some 3 micron polishing compound.

I wonder what this man's story is...
His name is Chris and this is from our 1983 Jr. High yearbook.
I recently recognized a panhandler as being this same punker boy all grown up.
I wonder what went on in the 30 years since I saw him last.
It really made me think, and feel fortunate for the decisions I made and the path I eventually took.
I wish he could have found something like rockclimbing.
