There was a season once when you could walk through the streets of Isla Vista and hear "Yellow Cowgirl in the Sand" playing everywhere.
Like it was life's soundtrack.

Thanks for the Phish Neil link-killer!
Saw Neil in Vancouver with the Harvesters in 1983- grade 10. (OMG- my daughter's age)
First route I ever did the FA of is called Been Burned (near Victoria) with my buddy Julian. We always had Neil cranking in the old Volvo. Good times those.

Generational common ground!!
From the cryptic, wandering days of Zuma and On the Beach, to the heart-wrenching soul searching and epic Tonight's the Night, to the huge, crashing guitars of the Weld albums, and the wise, creative commentary of Sleeps With Angels......

Buggs,
Jefe sent you a message by phone/email since he's not near a compoooter.
Neil is one of my all time favorites. Seen him many times.
Comes a time when you're driftin, comes a time when you settle down.
Blue blue windows behind the stars
yellow moon on the rise
big birds flyin across the sky
they were throwin shadows on our eyes.
feel free to paste that for me. I'll be singing as I'm slinging the paint today.
I feel so strongly I had to write this during a break.
Thanks b b bbbuggs!

It was great to see Neil on Conan's last Tonight Show--"Long May You Run". Very quiet. He's getting up there--65 in November. He helped write my journals in my "what am I doing here?" teen years. What was so funny on that show was when Will Ferrell came out and sang Lynard Skynard's "Free Bird" wearing a Neil Young T-shirt with Neil in his "Tonight's the Night" look. You just had to chuckle...
Keep on, Neil....

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.
On the shore lay montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.
And his subjects gathered round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.
Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.
They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still cant do today.
And I know shes living there
And she loves me to this day
I still cant remember when
Or how I lost my way.
He came dancing across the water
Cortez, cortez
What a killer.

Love is a rose
but you better not pick it
It only grows when it's on the vine.
A handful of thorns and
you'll know you've missed it
You lose your love
when you say the word "mine".
I wanna see what's never been seen,
I wanna live that age old dream.
Come on, lads, we can go together
Let's take the best right now,
Take the best right now.
I wanna go to an old hoe-down
Long ago in a western town.
Pick me up cause my feet are draggin'
Give me a lift and I'll hay your wagon.
Love is a rose
but you better not pick it
It only grows when it's on the vine.
A handful of thorns and
you'll know you've missed it
You lose your love
when you say the word "mine".
Mine, mine.
Love is a rose, love is a rose.
Love is a rose, love is a rose.

I have one Neil Young story. When I lived in the Bay Area, I would sometimes go to Woodside to score some "Disco Powder". I was just a young lad and there would always be a crew of older hippie types hanging at this dealers pad. One time it was Neil, for real, hanging out and doing what people did there. Another time it was another famous celeb, O.J. Simpson. The Juice needed some juice.

Hey Fattrad -
You got me trying to remember my youthful days lurking in Topanga with Neil and some of the Crazy Horse gang - seems that there were more than a few times when the Bu Boys would roll up to "check on noise complaints" - was that YOU?
You ever make it over the hill to El Rio - a couple of the Crazy Horse guitarists had a house amongst the bikers and the vatos that seemed to draw a lot of sheriff activity too.
So hard to remember - so much haze.

My personal all time favorite. Spent a lot of time with Neil driving in the deserts around Moab and between the Grand Canyon. Sometimes its so completely energizing. somehow?
THRASHER by Neil Young
They were hiding behind hay bales,
They were planting in the full moon
They had given all they had for something new
But the light of day was on them,
They could see the thrashers coming
And the water shone like diamonds in the dew.
And I was just getting up, hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun
When I saw those thrashers rolling by,
Looking more than two lanes wide
I was feelin' like my day had just begun.
Where the eagle glides ascending
There's an ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
Where sleeplessness awaits
I searched out my companions,
Who were lost in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science
Slashed the pearly gates.
It was then I knew I'd had enough,
Burned my credit card for fuel
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand
With a one-way ticket to the land of truth
And my suitcase in my hand
How I lost my friends I still don't understand.
They had the best selection,
They were poisoned with protection
There was nothing that they needed,
Nothing left to find
They were lost in rock formations
Or became park bench mutations
On the sidewalks and in the stations
They were waiting, waiting.
So I got bored and left them there,
They were just deadweight to me
Better down the road without that load
Brings back the time when I was eight or nine
I was watchin' my mama's T.V.,
It was that great Grand Canyon rescue episode.
Where the vulture glides descending
On an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums, galaxies and stars
Down the windy halls of friendship
To the rose clipped by the bullwhip
The motel of lost companions
Waits with heated pool and bar.
But me I'm not stopping there,
Got my own row left to hoe
Just another line in the field of time
When the thrashers comes, I'll be stuck in the sun
Like the dinosaurs in shrines
But I'll know the time has come
To give what's mine.

You know a song that grew on me? After the Goldrush.
First you think its a sort of preachy enviro thing, then you realize it's trippy science fiction.
There's a version on you tube where Niel plays it on his organ/ or wurlizter? anyway it's skin crawling good.

When these came out, I was early in college and I liked them a lot. When I was reenacting the themes in my own life, the lyrics haunted me and instantly connected me to a place of deep melancholy. But there was also some solace that others have tread that space and survived. I now count myself among the survivors! Or at least at a later stage of the adventure with a different set of issues.
I'm a dreamin' man, yes that's my problem
I can't tell when I'm, not being real.
In the meadow dusk, I park my Aerostar
With a loaded gun and, sweet dreams of you.
I'll always be a dreamin' man
I don't have to understand
I know it's alright.
I see your curves and I, feel your vibrations
You dressed in black and white, you lost in the mall
I watch you disappear, past Club Med Vacations
Another sleepless night, a sun that won't fall.
I'll always be a dreamin' man,
I don't have to understand
I know it's alright.
Now the night is gone, a new day is dawning
And our homeless dreams, go back to the street
Another time or place, another civilization
Would really make this life, feel so complete.
I'll always be a dreamin' man
I don't have to understand
I know it's alright.
Dreamin' man, He's got a problem... Dreamin' man
Dreamin' man, He's got a problem... Dreamin' man
From Hank to Hendrix, I walked these streets with you
Here I am with this old guitar, Doin' what I do.
I always expected, That you should see me through
I never believed in much, But I believed in you.
Can we get it together, Can we still stand side by side
Can we make it last, Like a musical ride?
From Marilyn to Madonna, I always loved your smile
Now we're headed for the big divorce, California-style.
I found myself singin', Like a long-lost friend
The same thing that makes you live, Can kill you in the end.
Can we get it together, Can we still stand side by side
Can we make it last, Like a musical ride?
Sometime it's distorted, Not clear to you
Sometimes the beauty of love, Just comes ringin' through.
New glass in the window, New leaf on the tree
New distance between us, You and me.
Can we get it together, Can we still walk side by side
Can we make it last, Like a musical ride?

Hey Survival. Thanks. I'm feeling a lot better. That whole debacle of the other day gave me a lot to think about. I've got both hands on the stick and I'm pulling up hard. Started a job today and got to roll out the trim-show with the seatless corrola. Anyway..
Some favorite Neil lines off the top of my head..
"Ain't it bad when you're dealin with the man and the light's shinin in your eyes!"
"Early in the mornin, he used to sleep until the afternoon..."
"So I grew up to be a fireman
put out every fire in town
but the judge sent me to prison
when I put the hose down"
"Everybody everybody know wo o wos, Everybody knows.."
"Well it wasn't supposed to go down that way
but they burned his brother"
"Why do I keep f*#kin up!?!?!"
I need to get the Neil back out. Awesome thread.

OK, here's the whole thing. One of my favorites and I just listened to it for the first time in quite a while thanks to this thread.
The Weld version cuts like a knife.
Crime In The City - Neil Young
well the cop made the showdown
he was sure he was right
he had all of the lowdown
from the bank heist last night
his best friend was a robber
and his wife was a thief
all the children were killers
they couldn't get no relief
a bungalow was surrounded
when a voice loud and clear
said come on out with your hands up
or we'll blow you out of here
there was a face in the window
the TV cameras rolled!
then they cut to the announcer
and the story was told
there's still crime in the city
said the cop on the beat
I don't know if I can stop it
I feel like meat on the street
they paint my car like a target
Itake my orders from fools
meanwhile some punk blows my head off
now I play by their rules
that's why I'm doin it my way
I take the law in my own hands
here I am in the alleyway
a wad of cash in my pants
Iget paid by a ten year old!
He says he looks up to me!
there's still crime in the city
but it's good to be free
FREEDOM!!
well I come from a family
that has a broken home
sometimes I talk to my daddy
on the telephone
and when he says that he loves me
I know that he does
I just wish that I could see him
I wish I knew where he was
that's the way all my friends are
cept maybe one or two
wish I could see him this weekend
wish I could walk in his shoes
but now I'm doin my own thing!
some times I'm good then I'm bad
although my home has been broken
it's the best home I ever had
well I keep gettin younger
my life's been funny that way
before I ever learned to talk
I forgot what to say!
sassed back to my momma
sassed back to my teacher
got thrown out of bible school
for givin the finger to the preacher
then I grew up to be a fireman
put out every fire in town
put out anything smokin
but when I put the hose down the judge sent me to prison!
he gave me life without parole!
wish I never put the hose down!
wish I never got old!
wish I never got old!

Great thread, die hard Neil fan since hearing Heart of Gold in ninth grade in Kitimat in 72. Saw him and Crazy Horse in Calgary in 94?, man can that guy rock!
How about Neil's tone and rhythm on Hank's herringbone as he busts out The Painter at The Rhyman or the perfection of his performance of The Needle and the Damage on The Johnny Cash Show way back when?
(Too bad he scalloped the braces on his D45!)
Favourite album, Tonight's the Night
Favourite lines,
"What do ya mean he had bullet holes in his mirror?"
"He tried to do his best, but he could not."
"Just lucky I guess."
Great guy, great guitar player, former frostback we still claim kinship with.
Keep on rockin' in the free world Neil!

Tradman- I do down by the river sometimes, but used to it a lot with my band.
I like powderfinger, because it's easy to take down a few notes so you don't have to sing so high. Same goes for like a hurricane.
I've been working on a harmonica and way distorted guitar version of after the gold rush. I'm thinking that will be it, no drums nothing, just power chords on an overdriven tube amp and harp. Try it out, there might be something there. I'm having trouble with it, but I can hear it in my head okay.
My problem with Neil is that his voice is pretty high. So when I change keys and go lower, I really think something is lost in the music.
The voice seems so integral to the song as a whole.

One of my favorites: Will to Love
"Will To Love"
It has often been my dream
To live with one
who wasn't there
Like an ocean fish
who swam upstream
Through nets,
by hooks, and hungry bears.
When the water grew less deep
My fins were aching
from the strain
I'm swimming in my sleep
I know I can't go back again.

A few of you have mentioned the Catalyst. I have a recording of a Catalyst show from '97 that is really good, and interesting. Has versions of Razor Love and Horseshoe Man that are much better IMHO than the album versions on Silver and Gold (released in 2000?). It's kind of interesting how he can keep a song waiting to appear on an album for a long time. Wonderin' and Ordinary People are examples of really good songs that took forever to make it to an album. For tons 'o concert recordings, you can visit www.dimeadozen.org

motion pictures on my teevee screen
a home away from home and I'm,
livin in between but I,
hear some people have got their dreams
I got mine
I hear the mountains are
doin fine
mornin glory is
on the vine
dew is fallin,
the ducks are callin
yes, I've got mine
well all these people,
they think they got it made but I
wouldn't buy, sell, borrow, or trade
anything I have.....
to be like one of them.
I'd rather start all over again
well all these headlights they just
bore me now
I'm deep inside myself but I'll
get out somehow
and I'll stand before you and I'll
bring a smile
to your eyes.......
motion pictures.....motion pictures......
damn.

I'm climbin this ladder,
my head in the clouds
I hope that it matters,
I'm havin my doubts
I'm watchin this gator
fly by on the lake
ice frozen six feet deep
how long does it take?
I look out on peaceful lands
with no war nearby
an ocean of shaking hands
that grab at the sky
I'm singin this borrowed tune
I took from the Rolling Stones
alone in this empty room
too wasted to write my own
I'm climbin this ladder
my head in the clouds
I hope that it matters.........

I have seen Young 30+ times over the years, since 1971. The most memorable was at the Willowbrook Inn, Petaluma , Calf. during the "Great Northern Coastal Bar Tour". Either '74 or early '75. Little dinner house and bar with maybe 12 people there and Neil and Crazy horse. Unforgetable. Heard songs like Hurracane, Winterlong, Powderfinger, Cortez the Killer, Don't Cry no Tears, Barstool blues, ect. Lots of these tunes appeared on the record Zuma and American Bars and Stars which came out later. What an evening!

Tradman- you do an acoustic version of Don't let it get you down?
I've had that thing in my head for a few days now.
Do you tune down for it? What chords do you use? The piano version, seems like too many chords that don't work.

An admirable musician, if only because he keeps trying new things, and doesn't just recycle his oldies. Although some, like Harvest and After the Goldrush, are outstanding. He also does quite a lot for philanthropic causes - two of his children have cerebral palsy. http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/Stars+tribute+Neil+Young+heart+gold/2503584/story.html
His father, Scott Young, was a well-respected Canadian (Toronto) sports journalist. Father and son were very different, and the father wrote a book about it called Neil and Me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Young
All that, and he's still Canadian.

Tom, he is tuned to D, with a dropped E string,
which makes it a low C.
sounds like sh#t unless you get a custom git made.
stills did the same thing on Love The One Your With,
i have a cheap Fender that i stuck a new saddle on to make it a dedicated C baritone guitar,
has a 60 ball end string for the low C. it is a lot of fun!
you can save 200 bucks if you have the cajones,
just drill new pin holes, buy some 1/4 inch dowells and a mill bit,
you can see a maple insert where the old bridge was>
D,Adario has the gauge vs tension info on the string package.
so if you want to maintain the same tension so you keep the same truss rod setting, you just match up the pull with the note,
your actual mileage may vary, so be careful!

Dr. Sprock. Thanks for the info. That sounds like fun. I'll tune down a half step from time to time because it's easier to sing with and still play open chords, but I never tried a drop c on tuned down to d.
The sounds like sh#t part would just be the dropped C right? or does the whole thing just get too rattly and loosey goosey? I think my guitar can handle the full step drop to d. Maybe I shall try tonight.
If my old guitar just had bad action, would that work? So much fun.

yeah it's like plucking spaghetti noodles, especially if you use lite ga.
so the bass string moves up a half step every time you pluck it.
gotta pick real lite, you can hear Neils bass sting rattling around against the frets pretty good at the beginning of that vid,
plus, when you loosen the strings, the truss rod warps the neck in the wrong direction, then it is like a slap bass.
these 20 dollar imitation tortoise shell picks are the bomb,
but buy a lite, the medium is like a heavy so you can sand it down to your specs.
they last forever if you don't lose them. and they bend with heat, just like real tortoise.

Not a great recording, but here is the song.

"Ride My Llama"
Remember the Alamo
When help was on the way
It's better here and now,
I feel that good today.
I'd like to take a walk
But not around the block
I really got some news
I met a man from Mars.
He picked up all my guitars
And played me traveling songs.
And when we got on ship
He brought out
something for the trip
And said, It's old but it's good
Like any other primitive would.
I'm gonna ride my llama
From Peru to Texarkana
I wanna ride him good
In my old neighborhood
I'm gonna ride him good
In my old neighborhood.
And when we got on ship
He brought out
something for the trip
And said, It's old but it's good
Like any other primitive would.

Danny Whitten, original member of Crazy Horse, was a hommie. He pinned a few notable songs including "I Don't Want To Talk About It"; which was a big hit for Rita Coolidge and others. He co-wrote "Come On Baby Let's Go) Downtown" (about the death of Bruce Berry, a roadie) with Neil. "Tonight's The Night" is also about Bruce Berry.
He sings "Cinnamon Girl" on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and plays much of the guitar in "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand".
Neil wrote the song "The Needle and The Damage Done" about Whitten's on-going addiction while recording with him. When the wheels finally fell off Young fired him. He died the next day after leaving Young's ranch. Neil is quoted as saying "Danny tried to do his best; but couldn't".

Just got On the Beach and Tonights's the Night digitally. I'll tell you, I'm right there with every song on these two albums. This is the Neil who speaks to me best. This is the Neil who most reminds me of where I was as a climber/young person in the 1970s.
One example. Tonight's the Night.
Bruce Berry was a working man
He used to load that Econoline van.
A sparkle was in his eye
But his life was in his hands.
Well, late at night
when the people were gone
He used to pick up my guitar
And sing a song in a shaky voice
That was real as the day was long.
Tonight's the night, yes it is,
tonight's the night
Tonight's the night, yes it is,
tonight's the night.
Early in the mornin'
at the break of day
He used to sleep
until the afternoon.
If you never heard him sing
I guess you won't too soon.
'Cause people let me tell you
It sent a chill
up and down my spine
When I picked up the telephone
And heard that he'd died
out on the mainline.
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night.
Bruce Berry was a working man
He used to load that Econoline van.
Well, early in the morning
at just about the break of day
He used to sleep
until the afternoon.
And maybe my favorite Neil Young line, from "Open Up the Tired Eyes."..."He tried to do his best, but he could not..."

It will be interesting to read his autobiography; as compared to Shakey. Memories change and Neil has been known (like the rest of us) to change the perception of memories, as our lifes zoom by. That and the fact that he likes to to leave a little bit for the imagination.
Not too many songs of his I don't like; it isn't always the lyrics. Although both the angry words as well as the romantic ones seem to touch me as much as everyone else; then there's the combination of both.
I love the violent riffs on the guitar as much as the sweet strokes on the mellower tunes.
I have been listening to the Americana CD a lot. He never stops creating.

some guy above spoke enthusiastically of two-thirds of NY's Ditch Trilogy. He's advised to check out the remaining third.
Time Fades Away is a ragged, fukked-up gem. Some pretty piano ballads alongside out-of-tune, chasing-the-beat rockers. It's an integral part of the Tonight's the Night/On the Beach gestalt.
Zuma doesn't get much attention, but it's arguably the fourth installment of the Ditch Trilogy.

My favorite Neil songs:
Tonight's the Night
For the Turnstiles
One is about a specific person, one of his roadies who OD'd on heroin, Bruce Berry. The other is about, well, who knows what? The lyrics are clear enough, but you tell me what Neil was talking about here:
"All the sailors
with their seasick mamas
Hear the sirens on the shore,
Singin' songs
for pimps with tailors
Who charge ten dollars
at the door.
You can really
learn a lot that way
It will change you
in the middle of the day.
Though your confidence
may be shattered,
It doesn't matter.
All the great explorers
Are now in granite laid,
Under white sheets
for the great unveiling
At the big parade.
You can really
learn a lot that way
It will change you
in the middle of the day.
Though your confidence
may be shattered,
It doesn't matter.
All the bushleague batters
Are left to die
on the diamond.
In the stands
the home crowd scatters
For the turnstiles,
For the turnstiles,
For the turnstiles. "

I had an old cassette tape with a couple of extended tracks from that Trans album. There was a version of Mr. Soul, kinda like the one on the album, but so much more heavy.
fvck I would crank that tune.
What a gem is Neil.

In 2002 i crossed mongolia in a russian jeep. The only cassette we had was Decade. Got played maybe 300 times tho i was the only english speaker. Somehow it fit perfectly.
Tho no one agrees with me i think his is the best version of All Along the Watchtower. The gritty mood of Dylan and the electric howl of Hendrix nails it.
Hes the cornerstone of rock music.

A couple years ago I got to help moving two 40 ft containers full of his equipment across a lawn, about a hundred yards, to the stage. There were 12 of us at 8 am when we started. Four of us got to stay and move some of the stuff onstage and help the techs where needed.
Then we got to watch the sound check from behind the stage before we covered up all the equipment. They played for about an hour and twenty minutes , quite a few of the classic's.
I got some pictures of the two cases that when opened show his ten or fifteen guitars in them ,Hank's Martin, Steve's Gretch , Old Black, but I wont post them.
( Its a roady thing.)
Very cool to see his pedal set up and his old amps. One of the techs told me he has over 400 1959 Fender amps. See Wiki,,
But that one on the stage was the one he liked the best.
It was cool to see what goes into a show like that as they tuned the piano and checked the different instruments and mic's.
We got to unload Woody,, the wooden Indian who is always onstage at every concert.
And every thing was ready when Niel showed up for the sound check at 3:30.
Pretty amazing operation to pull that all together.
It was fun.

I had the pleasure of seeing a show at this storied venue before it closed its doors. A band playing Zappa (One Size Fits All) before Dweezil started doing so again and I left wondering if I would ever hear Frank's music again.

The Bridge School Benefit concert is dead. I think Neil's health is flagging. Sorry to say on both accounts.

The Luke/Nose/14years old thread got me nostalgic, and I was just going to to launch a thread "There is a town in north Ontario,". Luckily I searched and can bump this thread.

Neil Young has made all of his albums (including ten unpublished ones) available for free. You get things like a 17 min version of Cowgirl in the Sand etc.
http://www.neilyoungarchives.com/#/?_k=xrpbrd
Free free free. and you have a choice of listening to them as they were originally mastered, or if you have a slower connection, as 320 Kbs. Sweet site design once you get the nuts and bolts of it. Some songs don't have listening ability and some are in progress, but just keep clicking and you'll get something to listen too.

Hadn't even heard of Dolby here, but still great
lots of times it's the performance, not the tech
