"Tommy is a nobody.

Rock climbers are nobody's.

Most athletes are nobody's.

For "Athlete of the Decade" by Associated Press, you need to be a somebody that makes money for the top of "Forbes 500".

And that's what it's all about.

Not this grandeur of illusion from some small coffee shop from nowhere USA that thinks it can change the world."

Good God Werner, did someone take the tire out of your cage???

"Greatest Athlete" is an ambiguous title. Strict determination and identification of the words "greatest" and "athlete" are required to ground or base such a claim. In Britain, athletics refered to track and field. And dictionaries define "athletic" as individuals trained in a discipline involving running, walking, throwing or jumping. Certainly golf requires walking.

Many people don't believe golf is athletic or that Tiger Woods is an athlete.

But, darn, if it keeps him out of trouble..........

The international press usually awards such things to football ('soccer') players, being that it is a highly athletic activity, and the most commonly played and watched game worldwide.

Whatever else, I'd suggest that 'sports' which are likely or certain to cause significant permanent physical damage to those playing at a professional level, e.g. American football and boxing, not be considered. And hopefully no-one using performance enhancing drugs would slip in.

Can we really compare gold medals across various sports disciplines? Olympic track and field athletes can't compare to swimmers in medal count because there are no events for running backwards or sideways.

How about distance runner Kenenisa Bekele, bad ass. Two world records in the last decade; 26:17 for 10,000 meters (6.2 miles at 4:12 per mile!)and 12:37 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles at 4:07 per mile). Just a thought.

Seeing how Armstrong started the decade with cancer, he wins Most Improved as well.

People love to choose some top things among things that don't compare

Before Tiger, golf was a rich white man's sport for your uncle filbert.

Now, its sexy.

No single athlete has changed the face of his sport more than Tiger.

FACT.

And when the police asked his wife how many times she hit his car with the six iron, she said "oh I don't know, put me down for five."

a good measure of an athlete is how much sweat one puts into a sport and how much energy one expends....tiger seemed to have lots of spare energy when it came to his off course philandering....lance , on the other hand , is only on his 3rd relationship in 20 years.....in addition to dodging beer , spit , and german insults on a 12% , 10 mile climb , lance has to be able to go downhill , balls-out on these narrow alpine descents at 60 mphs.....tiger has to lolly gag to the next hole in an electric golf car between commercials.......the most noise tiger hears is from a bunch of applauding yuppie scum.... lance has to make split-second decisions when to attack with a hundred desperate cyclists breathing down his neck.........cycling is like a boxing match on wheels......tiger , besides his sexual prowess , is a one trick pony compared to lance....when lance finishes a race he has to get off his feet , nap, eat , and get a massage...when tiger finishes a match i'm guessing he's sipping a cocktail thinking about the next hole.....?

Boxing is the purest sport. The athletes are conditioned beyond any other athletes in all of pro-sports.

Boxers are sucking after one round! Well, aside from some Himalayan climbers nobody holds a candle to X-C skiers. Try racing 50 K in two hours! Those guys and gals have the most awesome upper body conditioning to complement the obvious lower body. Triathletes are a close second.

Pate,
I acknowledge that boxers are tough but they're not even in the same
galaxy cardio-wise with triathletes and XC skiers.

the larger (largest) sports market must be the US, so these sorts of questions seem to matter...
how about this list:

Tiger Woods
Barry Bonds
Lance Armstrong
Tom Brady
Michael Phelps
Jimmie Johnson

and

Marion Jones
Jennifer Capriati
Serena Williams
Annika Sörenstam
Lorena Ochoa
Candace Parker

I'd pick Lance and Serena....

but maybe also Ronaldinho deserves to be up there too...

Any disabled athlete is in my book streets ahead of fully able bodied ones.
So many more challenges.
