His web site as real world info-base was/is ahead of its time.
His marketing is lo-gloss, emphasizing our great sport, not some
worn out paper-thin "image".
There is humor there, plenty - look around and see just how rare
that is in the (seemingly sterile) outdoor biz.
FISH products are made in USA.
FISH is authentic, no question there.
FISH is a unique thing in a world suffering from an
over-dose of sameness.
thanks Russ, for keeping it real...

And then there is Wide Fetish.
Brilliant.
Demonstrating a clear finger on the pulse of the
sport and traditional climbing values - showing an
interest not only in preserving them, but in adding
that key ingredient called fun.
Wide is difficult, hard to get into in the mental and
physical sense. Often hard to protect and no joke if
you blow it.
Wide is special in another way too - its kinda hard to
cheat.
So, here's to the Wide crew, oft persuing some of the
most powerful and commanding lines on a cliff!
Long may you stack, arm-bar, knee jam, heel-toe
and worm drive...
And remember - this is serious stuff - no fun allowed, dammit!

As one who has been in the trenches of a similar
operation, I can assure you it is no small feat keeping
the flame alive for what, including incubation time,
something like 30 years.
Longer?
Does long term commitment count? I hope so.
The importance of FISH styling hallmarks are an easy
thing to understand. It says, be yourself, do your own
thing, and bail on that nonsense they push called "fashion".
An easy thing to appreciate in todays world of mass
conformity, I am sure you will agree.
No, not mainstream - that's the whole point.

I bought one of the above gym bags for my wife, only all in white with the jersey cow side panels. She can't stand it, said it smells like Fish and doesn't have a Nordstroms tag on it. So its mine now. I love it and gets all kinds of comments, most of which get me in fist fights. Thanks Russ!

The emphasis on hard core technical info on the FISH site,
its focus on substance, including the humorous and modest
first person accounts clearly underlining the seriousness of
the game, has been an inspiration to many - including me -
for a long time.
Seems maybe mainstream climbing companies might
possibly have benefitted from this for a while? It all fits
together. Part of the wonderful diversity of our sport.
Still, those walls are serious so remember, no beer or
(god forbid) real booze in the haul bags, no fun (of any
kind) at the bivi, ok? This is a game for the chosen few -
but suspect a few may chose to have some "fun" along
the way, and I sure hope you do...
(in any way you like) - if you can. :-)

Peter Haan - that art you posted is great,
I'm hanging it on my wall :-)
great comments everyone!
here's some notes for niche manufacturing.
this is formula, ok? thoery, nothing more:
for niche players, the ideal is one product,
or one service - hold on to that, work backwards
from there.
the bane of small scale manufacturing is the
number of SKU's - total.
identify the 20% that does 80% percent
and ramp up to meet that demand.
best of luck to Russ and Sooze,
FISH and Wide Fetish...
our climbing world would not
be as fun, nor as diverse, without.
cheers everyone,
have fun and
climb safe

now that you mention it.... I do.
I want to use my new product as a sled. But since I live in sunny Tucson and doubt I'll see snow any time soon soI'm in no rush (and told him "whenever" on the need by: date).
Hopefully soon I'll have a portaledge on order - along with a rain fly that leaks like a sieve and I'll die under unless I have a bivy sack.
But as far as buying russ a beer goes, $2 gets you off lucky. Last time I passed through there my beer bill ran about $125 (not kidding). Though... Blitzo was involved.

My Zebra bag just turned twenty.
It goes with me most of the time,
last wekend San Francisco, the week before Phoenix.
The Zebra bag has been all over the place, and 20 years later,
still bombproof.
and that's sayin nothing about the runners, or the rope bag,
or the... ya what the... the HUMOR!
Quality, Humor, value, all in one place... sheesh.
edit...
ok, i forgot.... fish hooks.

When I was at the Fish Compound last week Russ was just finishing up a really nice double wide ledge. He's got this new space age material he's using for rain fly's. Apparently it has solar cells in it that will boil coffee, dry your poop in your tube, power a Hilti, and when it rains it'll turn the inside of your living hell into a warm cozy and DRY little hanging camping trip.
ha! seriously though... he did have some new material and the stuff looks absolutely bomber! Though once the ledge and fly were all built and delivered the going rate was a cool $K
The ledge alone was a work of art.

I just picked up the most *excellent* ledge ever from the FISH compound the other day. I spend a lot of time sitting on my ledge, so it has to be *just right*. FISH offered to make a few minor tweaks (that were prolly a huge PITA) so I went for it.
Despite owning a bunch of ledges (Old style BD double, Metolius Bombshelter, New BD single to name a few) It has been clear to me for Years that the FISH ledge is better than those. Not just better in ways that don't matter, but ways that DO matter, such as:
* geometry that makes more sense (not a monster flag like the cabana, the double can be put together by a single user)
* details that help make life sweet - Daisies along the edge of the bed to hang your stuff, daisies on the suspension for ur coffee, jet boil, whatever
* Weight that lets u style on a double for LESS weight than a BD signe
* Price that lets u buy not one, but TWO haul bags, a big one and a subbie for the price difference that you would pay for a BD or metolius
* A fly that overlaps a foot under the bed, has corner lock downs to prevent tears, and blowholes so you can, uh, do your business, puke, or check the weather without lifting up the corner of the fly and soaking your gear when it gets bad. (I use an I-tent now, but I know that the FISH fly offers the convenience of a quick-deploy umbrella ledge with near the features an protection of one of those **&@%%&^#! flys where you have to shove your fully assembled ledge thru the door sideways...in the dark in a windstorm. Woo hoo.
* Oh yeah...and a company that hand-makes gear in the garage but still has enough time left over to supply free stuff to guys who are maintaining our climbing areas.
Many thanks, Russ, for my sweet black and red FISH ledge.

Damn, that last previous post was by Shack... that dude was all over this forum for years and then just disappeared. I guess the question is "was Shack really LEB?"
Oh yeah, and to keep it on topic, I bet Shack prefered a sack made by fish.

Custom Mini Smashers produced by FISH Products for an industrial bolt replacement job on the Sonoma Coast. I broke a 3/8" stainless bolt out there a couple months ago and we've been going all out with the support of the ASCA upgrading all those time bombs to titanium.
Thanks for the tools to get the job done FISH!
