it seems to me this girl revels in the power to yank us around.

beware potential suitors. those kind of girls are debilitating.

yet another comminity conversation (wine thread) was destroyed by our friend

ms rainbow.

im a little pissed cause i shared some soul into that glass of wine.

she has some middle of the night emotional hisssy and its all gone.

whatever sweetie.

i'll not patronize your thoughts no more. you've lost the privelage of mine contribution.

thanks Dingus. your compliment is received with a humble blush (not of the wine kind).

you have been a literary role model for me since i began reading your tales back on rec.climbing. or was it tuan's mountaineering page?

we all are who we is, for sure.

but when someone repeatedly steps on my bootlaces,

i begin to step around them.

Boring people suck.

True, but rude people suck, too.

And this increasing deleting of threads that others have contributed to is getting pretty far up on the rude scale.

Sure, the way this forum is set up, a thread starter has the power to delete her own threads. But to do it the way t*r does it is to say a great big "F*#k you!" to the people who have contributed.

I say no deleting threads/posts unless someone has been offended and called you on it..... (If you start a thread, and someone else has posted to it, then you should not delete the post. If someone posts a thread that you have posted to, do not delete the post.)

Unless someone says foul, and asks you to pull it.

Pretty simple practice...

But that's too easy right..

P.S. Edit: Norweg... you're posts are brilliant.

I got an idea. You can create a thread called: Responses to t*r threads.

You leave this post completely blank until you want to respond to a t*r post. when you do, do so in your Responses thread. That way you have complete control over your words/threads.

Good luck with that

so check it babe.

maybe i feel like a little bit of an asse for crossing the placid river and shouting from the shore unkind. in my original post i mean.

shall i delete it? i wont.

jest let em roll. the thread...bumps and all. if i got cold feet and backed out the delete door, then all these thoughtful folks' thoughts would drift into the inconvenient realm, and thus obscurity.

that is unkind as they took the time to share. and i respect their efforts and wit.

beside, most of my shite drifts off the front page on its own, tiptoe-ing across these landscapes as a slight trot...

I feel that it is ultimately your right to delete or not to delete.

But, at the same time, you cannot get upset if people have a certain feeling about you, your posts, and threads you begin.

I think I'm with the Norwegian in that I may not chime in on a t*r thread for fear of having the thing deleted... Now that I think of it.... never mind all that....

Yea! Tell me about it.

Couple a nights ago, it's like WAY past my bed time, after 1am as a matter of fact. Just a bout to call it a night, and here I see t*r out trolling for a dirtbag. It said something like this "dirtbag where are you"

I said to myself "dreams do come true".

I'm thinking, I finaly qualify! So I link-up and I was expecting to get some dialogue going or something, and what's she got there? A link to another thread, a utoob song "Total Eclipse of the Heart". I'm thin-kin chicks into the sensitive dirtbag types.
I thought "well what the heck, bars all emptying out...bird in the hand is better than two in the bush." So I listened to the damn song!!

Then I go and spend 15 minutes typing up the most pathetic uber-drivel about how sensitive the song was yadayadayada, made myself sick..... And finally about 2am I go to post and...what the F*#k...Deleated,pulled out right from under my feet.

folks, this is the internet. in addition to its many disadvantages, it has a few advantages over more structured creative products, like newspapers, books, archives, and research libraries. one of those advantages is that the net is by nature transient.

there is nothing permanent here.

st is a marketing platform for guidebooks. it is privately run. it is not a not-for-profit, it is not a public institution, and it could disappear at any time. if something happens to chris, or if he builds the brand sufficiently to generate a big corporate offer, or if something nasty enough happens in the forums to generate unwelcome attention from authorities, it's gone.

anything you sweat over, edit, or otherwise cherish should be saved to your hard drive and backed-up in multiple formats.

sic transit gloria mundi

If your point is that her behavior is due to vulnerability she feels due to past treatment from others (Lois claimed similar), then t*r needs to suck it up, buttercup. Or find another forum to prance around on.

No my point is she can and should delete any thread she wishes and she don't owe no one no apology for it neither.

Gotta disagree with that. To start a thread here is to invite others to not just read your thoughts, but to contribute theirs. To then delete those contributions is just plain rude.

So yeah, it's quite true that she can delete her own threads, but if she does, then she has no right to complain about people dissing her for it. You've raised kids Dingus, and you should recognize eight-year-old behavior when you see it. If your daughter behaved the way t*r did, I bet you'd have called her on it. Somehow, I just can't picture you telling your daughter that she can do anything she wishes and don't owe no one no apologies. So why cut t*r that slack?

If she doesn't want people to join in on her threads, then why not just refrain from posting them in the first place?

Anyone who starts a thread has a right to delete it, esp. when it has deteriorated or completely wandered from the OP, or develops a very negative, destructive tone about it. I have no qualms with an occasional choice to delete a thread when something like this has occurred.

t*r, on the other hand, regularly deletes threads- though many are downright childish and worthy of deletion (better yet, should never have been posted, in my opinion), some of her threads are quite interesting to many people. Deleting them is disrespectful of those who have contributed, and it appears to be nothing more than attention-getting behavior.

I suppose while it's her choice to start/end threads, it is everyone else's choice to post to them- if you don't care much about your posts disappearing, then have fun with it. Otherwise, find another thread to contribute to, where they are more likely to stick around.

Dingus, some of her posts to norwegian were snotty. I think Ghost is correct. There is kind of a point where a thread starts to belong to the community. It is not written in stone, but I do believe that there is a point. It is a moving point, but I do believe that it exists. At some point the original poster should lose control over whether a thread exists or not. Imagine if some of the original stonemaster threads were deleted because the original poster got a whim. Sure the thread still exists, but now it can't be added to. or Bumped. That seems a mistake to me.

It is always possible to delete the first post of a thread, which also deletes the thread title. Even going back months or years. (I checked several of "my" threads.) After about ten days, it is no longer possible to delete or edit all subsequent posts to a thread, although you could (sort of) indirectly do so by deleting pictures from e.g. PhotoBucket where they're hotlinked to ST.

It's pretty clear (to me at least) that deleting the pointer to threads and thereby silencing the entire community's ability to continue in a thread of discourse is one of her only ways of exercising control within her pretty often out-of-control life. As can be clearly seen by most anyone here the WOMAN (BTW, this is just NOT A KID and people who act like she is are being silly) has little to no self esteem and also has some very serious body image issues due to her weight. While it is incredibly rude to do what she does it is her thing. Rudeness seems to be a trait that is very prevalent within her life and is probably her primary defense mechanism. Just because her behavior is 'possible' within the programming of the board I do not think that fact makes it OK as a member of a community, which she no doubt does not really feel she is a part of in the first place.

All that aside though. Flaking on a climbing trip (ESPECIALLY when you know the people you are going with are probably going to have to choose different routes in order to accommodate your abilities and are pretty much dedicating their trip to you in that regard) is just plain f*#king rude.

I will never grant this community ownership of my words, not ever.

Your words are always your words, I would not take that away from you, but I think that a thread is a different thing. A thread becomes a living thing as long as people post to it or read it. Once it has a life of its own, then I don't think that it should be solely up to the original poster as to whether it carries on. Certainly you should be allowed to remove your posts from a thread if you so choose, the problem comes in with the life of the thread if you are the original poster. As we have it, the original poster has control over whether a thread lives or goes dormant. At the beginning, I think that is fine as sometimes mistakes are made, but I do believe that there is a point where a thread becomes community property. Not the individual posts, but the whole.

t*r -- "this thread is about A LOT MORE than deleting posts and you all know it"

100% correct.

It's about the basic root of every individual to honor accountability & responsibility for ones actions. Constantly deleting shows otherwise.

Whether it's on a stupid blog, on the national or world media level, accountability and responsibility for actions are still held in the highest regard.

Unfortunately as we see in our world today these highly valued traits are in decline and becoming almost non existent.

It's not only just about you t*r and that's why it touches a nerve on people.

Russ Walling a long time ago said if one actually uses their own real name on the these forums then one will definitely think twice about what they say and do.

No one should feel guilty what so ever about using any type of avatar here.

That wasn't the main point at all.

Some people can not use their real name for we all know the reasons and we all know those reason are not related to accountability or responsibility.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and my comment about using real names was just an example.

edit: I really was never going to respond to this thread at all until she tried to throw the whole blame outside of herself and imply to the op to delete his thread.

Not that I disagree with Norwegian. I think deleting threads to exercise control in some way is kind of childish. I did it once with a thread because I was pissed too.

But it's really kind of crazy how this forum turns into a virtual lynch mob once it gets going. So, in a way I can say I know how t*r might feel right now.

If we de-personalize this issue, it's actually pretty interesting.

What is the purpose of an online forum? To share information, post up random thoughts, "art," and a whole multitude of other things. One trait of this forum is that you are not bound to what you post if you start a thread because you can delete it. However, it seems the majority here holds itself to a fairly strong ethic of NOT deleting posts.

I can see why. If just enough people deleted their posts often enough, the incentive to post--and spend time constructing finely crafted prose...eh hemm--would be compromised, since it wouldn't be as likely that you'd be rewarded for your efforts by being able to share information, random thoughts (all those purposes of an online forum listed above) and receiving other people's feedback. (I will go one step further and say that empirical evidence here shows that people's reward for posting is not just sharing information and receiving positive feedback...but in most cases, enjoying plain old attention and recognition, which leads to the significant feeling of belonging to a community.)

Lest I get too long-winded here, the community wouldn't exist if too many people deleted their threads all too often, thus most people hold themselves to the ethic of sticking with what they post because they know they would rather encourage the community's existence than protect their own reputation at the expense of the community.

There are some other people, though, who appreciate the ability to delete their random thoughts, for whatever reason. Those people probably wouldn't post nearly as often if the option to delete didn't exist. I don't think we should think those people are any worse or better than the majority, as long as we recognize that it takes a majority of people who don't delete to keep the community going. The minority who enjoys the option to delete, and uses it more liberally, shouldn't be chastised for that either, since the option exists and as some have suggested, is not punished by more than majority discontent.

Of course, majority discontent is pretty powerful. It could ultimately lead to the minority being run out of town (if the majority wants that to happen). That way no one who stuck around would delete for a while, for fear of being tossed out of the community. (Eventually, a new rogue would turn up, and the whole thing would happen again as is the way of things...)

So, we all have to ask ourselves. Do the posts that t*r puts up here and then deletes have so little value we'd want her not to post them in the first place? Because, that is the only way I see the majority changing the behavior of the minority. The few people who feel the need to exercise the delete power will be bullied into not using it. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY WILL STOP DELETING POSTS, IT MEANS THEY WILL STOP POSTING THEM (in most cases, maybe not in t*r's, since I don't want to paint her as a weak personality).

I mean, there's some underlying need to delete that the majority is able to cope with that the minority who deletes is not. Making it near impossible to delete doesn't mean that underlying need will go away, it just means the minority will make it so they are never even in the situation where they might feel the need to delete in the first place.

That said, Norwegian, if you delete this now after all this wonderful babbling I've contributed, well you might just turn up with your handle in the title of a thread! ;-) Doesn't matter though, you can rest assured I'd just be called a dyke and run out of town.

PS I deleted a thread about my relationship with someone here a couple years ago, immediately regretted posting it for airing dirty laundry, and deleted. Then, I immediately regretted that. As soon as I posted the original thread, I realized I didn't want a bunch of people who might know us to be privy to my insecurities. It was pretty immature of me to seek support on an internet forum in the first place, but you know how it goes. I recognize that it's frustrating for people who value what they write when their work is deleted. I don't mean to minimize that at all. In the case of my deleted thread, I was trying to start a conversation about relationships between two climbers in general...and it came out all too personal. I started the thread again under a new guise and it turned out pretty constructive for me. Judge me as you will; I don't regret it!!!!!

EDIT: All "posts" are meant to be "threads." Thanks, Ghost!

EDIT EDIT: Actually, only some "posts" are meant to be "threads." None of the verbs "post" should be "thread."

Yosguns, I think there's a point here that you are missing. That is the difference between deleting posts and deleting threads. Nobody minds if you, or I or t*r or anybody else deletes posts. They're your (or my or t*r's) own posts and if you regret your words, no one should be upset that you delete them.

But when you delete an entire thread, you are deleting not just your own words and thoughts, but other people's as well. Which, if not grounds for a hanging, is certainly thoughtless and rude. In the case that started this whole silly thread, had t*r simply edited her first post to be blank, or to say "I didn't mean this" or whatever, no one would have given a rat's ass. Norwegian wouldn't have felt insulted, and his words would still be there for all to read.

Of course it is possible that I misunderstood your post and you now think I'm a racist homophobic moron, but if you say that, then I'm going to say that you're a homophobic moronic racist. So there.

Ghost, man, I get it. I'm not missing the point. My spiel about online communities wouldn't work if I were talking about posts...well, it would, but it would take a lot longer for the whole forum thing to come crashing down if people just deleted their posts.

3) Every one of your insults is about Arabs and Muslims. Like a broken record. We get it. Your friend died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan due to bad weather but you blame the Afghanis. L M F A O.

Real f'n original! You're like the Vanilla Ice of SuperTopo.

I could go on but you get the picture. Like i said, Pâté. You ever wanna try this out, you know 'round which part of the country I am, punk.

And when you translate English to Arabic/Farsi things get lost in translation so again, you're speaking gibberish. But all of your posts are gibberish so nothing original there either.

dear t*r,
i don't like to see folks get beat up. you come across as strong girl, so i assume that you are laughing alot of this silliness off. i hope that you are.

when the thread turned harsh, i considered pocketing it, but didn't due to ideals or some sh#t.

but, anyway, if i deleted this thing it would not change the way your peers think, it would only change their ability to express it.

so, if you really want to delete this thread, or actually the substance of this thread, then i guess you gotta earn back these folks' respect by NOT stringing them along and then yanking their chain.

that's how i felt when i hissied all over the front page about looking for something and realizing that someone else hid what i wanted. that 'sall.

im way over it and im sorry that you had to take such a slandering. silliness abounds around here but i realize it can be hurtful.

no hard feelings on my side. i hope that there are not wee stones in your shoes either.

good night little squaw.

That's just me, to each their own. As to people attacking others? Those messages are good to have too because its an insight into who they really are.

the dad bailed, cowardly f*#k that he was,
and she wanted to scrape him from her
