Having a set up is really cool. Here is me rigging mine in the morning.

We were a bit of a traveling junk show on this trip because there were 5 of us on a 7 day trip in one boat.

Up your way, the Middle Fork of the Flathead is easy and beautiful. The water color is amazing.

i rowed and had 4 passengers. that was a heavy boat to row through headwinds. i much prefer having one or two passengers max, but this was a family trip with my parents. thank god my wife likes to row flatwater and smaller rapids or my arms would have fallen off.

mountainbuzz.com is a good website, and has a used gear for sale forum. you should also pick up the complete whitewater rafter by jeff bennett. that can get you started. feel free to email me with any questions too if you decide to get a set up. i made a few mistakes in my initial outfitting that required replacements.

rowing isn't too hard, and you will pick it up especially quickly if you've kayaked and can read water. it helps if you can go with someone who can teach you, but its easy enough to pick a class 2 river and figure it out from there. just make sure to log a lot of time in easy water before biting off a big trip like the grand or middle fork of the salmon.

i'll be doing an idaho trip in august. hopefully it'll be the main salmon if i can get a cancellation permit, otherwise i'll be on the lower salmon. you are welcome to come if you want to kayak. i'll be running rivers most weekends in colorado and utah too if you are ever in that area.

Idaho does indeed rock, but I'm not telling the outastaters either, and the State Trooper made sure last week that I knew the speed limit is absolute in Idaho. 65 means 65 not 74.
Blinny, I have my own boat and am on the middle fork from mid May through the low water. Mark and you are welcome to come down one day or even a weekend for a free ride on the middlefork. I give rides to every related tom, dick, and harry, that comes my way. It wouldn't hurt to give out a ride or two to a crafstman and his skiing oriented Yosemite loving partner. No strings.(no pun intended)
Isn't Idaho downstream? Uh I wouldn't drink the water guys, I've seen where it's been.

On another thread (CHP & Castle Rock), RJ said "we actually GOT WOLVES! Real ones, not pretend cartoon ones!"

I KNEW he was a closet wolf-hugger. Be nice, though, or we'll take them back and give them to New Jersey or California or somewhere like that.

Winnipeg: ten months winter, two months poor sledding. Idaho too, perhaps.

steelmnky, Andy@, -- and especially you Dudeman,

i tried to warn you, but no. you just had to go all kodachrome and post that stuff. (all of course actually taken in California, or Canada, or somewhere else actually worth visiting.)

the Society To Prevent Texans And Other Such Tourists (STPTAOST) now has a bead on the lot of you, and well, if i were you i'd just hang myself and go for easier exit...

(that said, i do look forward to checking out some of the places in those photos -- out in California or Canada or wherever those places really are)

nice to have known you, enjoyed your stuff. adios.

I love where I live ( yosemite ) and have no plans to move. Does this mean I can visit without being hunted down by the anti tourist league? I even like snow, as long as I don't have to shovel it. I have been well trained to pick up after myself and leave no trace. I drive a 4 by 4, though it has california plates and only has a 6 cylinder engine. It even has real off road tires.

Can I visit?

I will put a gun lovers sticker in the window if you think that will help. Though I draw the line at a Bush/Cheney sticker.

Moosie, you could be like Merrycans in Europe - with Canadian flags on their packs. Wear that Bush/Cheney sticker as protective camouflage - but make sure you can remove it before coming home.

Yep, i could do the canadian flag thing, but I can't change by license plate on my truck. Maybe we should start a place that lets you rent license plates.

Idaho could make money off that. Going to Idaho? Are you from Texas or California? Rent an Idaho license plate before you leave. 100 dollars for 30 days.

haha.. I don't know about Montana. Last time I was there a mosquito the size of a volkswagen tried to eat me for lunch. Now I know why everyone carries a rifle. They are bigger in Montana then the ones in Texas.

Edit: I think yall breed them and train them to go after Californians.

Yep, I knew it. Yall have bred them to only attack Californians. I was wondering why I was slapping myself silly while the Montanan I was with was laughing his rear off.

hey there all... say, thanks for the neat pics and share on idaho... say, i never in my life would have thought i'd get up that high, state wise... being that we only traveled from texas to calif and back...

say, really enjoyed traveling through... it was plain and flat driving for awhile... but very interesting and the air felt good... it makes you really glad, when you get somewhere, after the driving... enjoyed a differnt kind of scenerey, all right... didnt look like it, but we were up high, elevation-wise....

thanks again... awwwwwwww, slow down load, as usually.... i will have to come back when more time to enjoy all this...

I can proudly say I lived in Idaho for a summer as a firefighter. I bought my first kayak in Idaho and I managed to get some amazing climbing in. I also fell so much in love with the state that I've promised myself that I will settle down and retire there when the time is right. Even though I've met a decent bit of racism there (I'm black) I still consider Idaho one of my favorite states in the country!
