You're funny. The GTI pictured above (yes, going in a straight line cause I don't have the balls to shoot a picture of my gauges while cornering) ran me a whopping 4 grand. A great road machine and I still have it, and doubling the posted corner speeds is like boring. Triple 'em.

The Porsche? That's the "S" model and it is really something. It'sd not mine though, belongs to my companion. I get to drive it a lot.

:)

One night the Guyman is driving, I am riding shotgun, up the Kern Canyon. We're in his GTI, and he's doing all the curves and stuff at about 80%. Fast but nice. These headlights come up quick from behind. The Guyman tries to outrun them for a short bit and then hits a turnout to let this mean machine pass. Well, it's an old Ford Courier with no matching tires, and ladders tied to the top. So Guyman says, "cool, this dude knows the road" and commences to persue. We'll, it may have been my screams or his own instinct for survival, but ultimately the old truck won over the little pocket rocket.

No the GTI is not ugly, I just got a deal..

Ksolem,
'Nice shot of Voodo Dome.
"The Skull" is wicked.

Rokjox,
Sweet lowdown on your Pulsar.
Drive Babee, Drive.

I have an '81 Tercel which has stiffened front roll bar, 60 series tires, the thing is a worn out sneaker and I've flogged it on every mtn road between here 'n Cartago.

I put 50K last year on an '87 BMW 325E bought at 82K miles for $4,000. The E has a long stroke 2.7 liter thumper engine, it's been chipped, so the torque curve is extended, rpm raised and more horsepower. I drove the 4 corners states the whole 50K, performing 100+ Rock Shoe Demos at the climbing gyms on route.

Once Upon a Time,
In winter at a backcountry hut in the Meadows, Billy Russel pissed off Walt Shipley and Walt punched Billy in the Gob, knocking loose some of Billy's teeth.

So, Billy needed quite a lot of Dental Work, which needed to be done in Mariposa. This is a Rally Story, which set the stage for the Smooth Organ Fest as well.

Russ, Billy and I lived in C4 on Rescue and used to do these Goofy Rally Missions to Mariposa so Billy could do his time under the drill. We liked to pick up supplies: Malt Liquor, BBQ Stuff and the like. This is where Mussy and I spotted Liver, which we thought would gross people out back at C4. Billy said, "we can do better boyz, look at them gizzards, hearts, and other organs".

Once a week for most of a season, we'd git loaded into my Rippin Rear Wheel Drive Toyota Corolla and Blast down to Mariposa. Sometimes, we'd do touring detours, such as the old roads, for dirt rally genuiness (and ample drinking cover). On one occasion, my navigators were pretty looped, we were on, maybe the old Foresta cutt off before it was blocked. Van Halen Blazin, and the like, my clutch goes out. Jalopy standard, it had a hydraulic unit which only needed a fluid bump. My guys were worried - Billy always thought I drove too fast. I did.

On the way back up, we had our Tall Malt Liquors out and a cop pulled up behind us. We got flustered and Mussy pulled off his Cowboy Boots and started collecting our open beers and stuffed them in his boots. The cop just pulled around us and gassed it up over the hill and out of sight.

Years ago (for the record I don't do this anymore) I was driving down the road out of Joshua Tree National Monument drinking an ale. A car came up behind pretty quick and then there was the flashing red light. I about crapped myself, and stuffed the bottle under the seat and pulled off. The car which passed me was a ratty Saab, I think. They had one of those detective style flashing light units and were laughing their asses off.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if those dudes were reading this today....

When I was real young, way below drinking age, E Erickson, his buddy Lou and I would go to the Needles of California. This was about a 4 hr trip from LA. Lou was handy with a wrench and refurbed a BMW 2002: he'd do some pretty nifty cornering on the way in. Also, he was adamant about weight considerations, you know, light racks, no more gear than we 3 required.

Silly thing was, these guys loved their beer and no weight expense consideration applied. These were our "Funnel Days". I definitely don't do this anymore, or for that matter not for a several decades: we'd actually pull funnels while bombing around. Even the driver would pull funnels!

Once, while coming back from the Valley, either with E or Nick Badyrka, I was driving, I was funneling and the floor pans were so full of empties, if you opened the door, they'd role out! So there we are on Highway 99, I'm swerving just a tad to sink the full beer in the funnel and a CHP pulls along side, says, over his loudspeaker, "ALLRIGHT, LET'S KEEP IT ON THE ROAD", then he takes off and disappears!

tar..LMFAO..here is one.

Ed Erinfeld got married in Wawona and he lived in El Portel and that is where the real party was going to happen. Ed's mom grabs my friend Steve, who looked like the most normal one of the bunch, and asks if he would be willing to drive her car over to Ed'd house so Ed and his new bride can use it when they go off on the honnymoon the next day.
Now Steve has only driven VW's his whole life. Moms car is a 1970 396 SS Nova...very fast. Anyway Steve is not drunk, but pretty smoked up. We load the beer Keg's into the back of the Nova and Steve takes off with me in the MG chasing. I can tell Steve is having A LOT OF FUN driving the Nova cause some times he would slow down to about 20 mph and jump on it, laying down great big burn out marks in 2nd and 3rd gear!! When we were going under El Cap he put the hammer down and just left me in the dust. When I was getting close to El Portel I drove up behind a Winnebago that was stoped. I got out of my car and asked what was up. The bago driver said there had been an accident and the road was blocked. So I got back into my car and drove down to where the Nova was. It was sitting upside down, a cross the road blocking travel in both directions. Steve was OK, the car was sort of scratched up to say the least.
It had hit the edge of the road, right on a ramp shaped chunk of granite and if had flipped over and skidded on its roof for at least 100 feet, Steve said he ended up sitting on the inside of the top as it skidded down the road! What a lucky landing, the guard rail at that point was only a short granite curb keeping you from going into the Merced River about 100 feet below! I looked at the whole scene and what I saw didn't look good and I knew the Rangers would be there soon. So I crawled into the car and got the keys and went back to the trunk and opned it. The Kegs fell out and started rolling down the road, I stopped one and the other one rolled into one of the cars stopped on the road! I put one in the trunk of the MG and the other one into the passenger seat. The MG is the world's thinest car and I was able to squeeze through the gap between the Nova and the Granite cliff. I left Steve to deal with the Rangers, who were now on the way. The beer was delivered to Ed's house and the festivities continued long into the nite. Steve had a lot of explaining to do, to the Man and to Ed's mom but he got off with only a reckless driving ticket. Not to bad when you figure he caused a 4 hour tie up, on a Sunday.
Haa the good old days...

"Like Rommel in the desert.."

These were Keesee's words, as the big old Mercedes became completely engulfed in a huge cloud of dust and airborn sand while engaged in serious rallying on the dirt roads back to Church Dome.

My last Saab Turbo (Darkstar) cost $1800. I bought it with 100+k miles on it to which I added another 250. At about 325k it started to smoke, evenutally to the point that it hid all the cars I passed. since I was moving across country and had another car (with only 250k on it)I let it go ... just another in the long list of dumb things I've done. seatheaters, sunroof, skid plate, the works. for another $2k I'd still be scaring myself, getting tickets and 30mpg (35 if I kept it under 75mph, which was, of course, impossible), what was I thinking?

Guy,
MAN.
That was a good one.
Hey, what was Ed's mom doin' with an SS anyhow?

JayBro- Just go get another used SAAB, that's what my buddy does, they are a value.

I just picked up an '88 BMWIX for $2,300. I'm not disclosing the mileage, but it is full time 4WD, has a 60/40 rear front default split, so the manners are still rear drive. Comes stock with leather Recarros, stiffer suspension, high revving too. Kicks but out here in the snow.

Sorry Jaybra, not the Saab or the IX at those prices.
This is a Lancia Aurelia, in the Dolomites.
I was doing Via Ferrata with a gal and we bivied in the Sella Group at a hut wich has an approach requiring mandatory climbing. In the morning, we descended back to the road to see this really cool vintage Rally underway.
