This weekend I ran into Bob in the parking lot at Josh and asked him to direct me to something I hadn't done yet. I mean, there is a lifetime's worth of stuff I haven't done in Josh, but after 30 years of going out there, maybe 20 going out there fairly regularly, lots of the roadside stuff is getting old. These days, anything I've never done before automatically gets two extra stars if you know what I mean. Anyhow, Bob directed me to some fine climbs and my partner and I had a blast.

So, thanks to Bob for being a nice guy.

Thanks for putting up a slew of fine lines: Crucifix, Field of Dreams, Runaway, Physical Graffiti, the Gunslinger (which I still haven't sent), and others.

Thanks for (along with Coz) pushing me and Bruce to cast off on El Cap for the first time.

I've known Bob for many years now, and can strongly attest to his modesty, good nature, and generosity of spirit. For many, many years Bob has quietly supported the So Cal climbing community in ways that few can match. Thank you for your continued good work, Bob- it really is appreciated.

On a related note...

A friend & I were discussing Bob a couple of weeks ago...and we both wondered where/how he gained the 'Brother' moniker that many refer to him with...anyone know the history?

bob was kind enough to give me a copy of his newly published Best Climbs--JTNP, so i'd like to give it a plug here. it's does for the public the same favor he did for the OP--directions to some of the really great climbs you might have missed up until now, along with interesting bits of JT climbing history and some beautiful photography.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Bob for 33 years now;....he's been a great friend to me. Some of the new routes we have done together have been some of my best too. Always up-beat, always psyched, and a super talented climber,......I am lucky to have such a friend...lucky indeed.....he's a great man....

He runs a great operation.

I wanted to summit Mt. Humphries, and knew I didn't have the skill set. A friend told me about Vertical Adventures, so I signed up. I had two classes with Clark Jacobs, and 4 days with Scott Cosgrove. later I took self-rescue with Bob, and also spent a day with him climbing cracks.

What I learned there has been invaluable. Bob's the best.

How I Met Bob G.

Trying to get some climbing experience, I was talking to the Mayor of JTree one evening about possible rock adventures. The Mayor was booked, full calendar of Hard Rock appointments.

"Whoa", Gordo suddenly exclaimed, "Do you know Bob Gaines?"

I'd heard of this (in)famous rock persona, but personally didn't know him well.

Gordo gave me Bob's phone number. Apparently The Brother was looking for a guinea pig (did I say that?) for a guide test he was giving that weekend. I showed and had a terrific learning experience. Brother Dude is a great teacher, climber, human being and just plain fun to be around.

He did a climb in JTree which he pointed out to us..... to start the climb you have to run like heck, then vault up onto the rock.....and start the first move. Yikes, that's a send. Dude also has at least two fishing titles, one for trout and one for salmon that I know of.

Cheers to you Bob Gaines. Yo the real deal....and thanks for the schooling, lynne
