I was having some walnuts and white raisins and all of a sudden i see these little worms drop out of the bag of walnuts and start crawling on my table. They are white and about 2 cm long.

Am I gunna die?

Why are you eating white raisins?

They aren't white, they're chardonnay colored. Maybe they're chardonnay raisins?

Nasty, I can't believe I might have eaten a worm. That's gross.

I thought walnuts lasted forever.

The questions is...how did they get into the ziploc bag?

Unless they were already there =/

Maybe it's a new type of trailmix? jk :)

Really? They didn't look fat enough to be maggots. Great, i just vomited a bit in my mouth. Lynne, I know they're good source of protein but I don't want worms growing in my intestines!

Maggots make you trip nuts? Really?

Haha, no Fattrad. I got major congestion, though. Wearing a headlamp for the first time helped in illuminating the large amounts of dust that sit in the air at camp sites. No wonder I always go home all congested and stuffy after a weekend of camping.

They don't grow in your intestines, it's not a hospitable environment, :))

Nala, are you the Nala I gave a ride to Yosemite village with your brother last day of Face Lift ?

My guess is beetle larvae. Beetles love to get into nuts, fruits, flour (I think they prefer wheat ;-) )and other food in zip lock bags, either through a slightly open top or by boring through the plastic, esp. if it's not a freezer bag.

Have you noticed an infestation of small winged beetles in your house lately ?

I would not worry about eating the larvae if that is what they are.

Well, just be glad you swallowed them completely.

The only time they can be trouble is if one manages to get into your sinuses because you didn't get it all the way down the gullet. They can then burrow into the soft tissue lining of your sinus (an ideal environment for them), lay eggs, hatch larvae and actually start eating your brain. It's painless at least. Or something like that.

You'll be fine. I once had some of those same tiny white worm deals take up residence in a box of shake and bake. My sister used this box to bread some pork chops, which were served, and mine fully consumed, before anyone noticed the breading had been mostly replaced with insects. I thought the pork chop tasted fine; no ill effects. My sister spent the rest of the evening trying to boot.

When I worked on a hotshot crew we used to dare each other to eat grub worms. Wagering routinely ensued. I saw a guy, for like twenty bucks, eat one so big that worm guts were coming out of the sides of his mouth.

I remember you guys from Facelift! Welcome!

Mom used to call th at "incidental protein".

The Vegans hate it when that happens.

Kinda funny.

You didn't vomit a little in your mouth until you read the word "maggots" right?

I'll eat adult mosquitos, adult or larval caddis flies, stonefly nymph
and adult, mayfly nymph and adult, no problem. Depending on the species,
they can be really, really good.

Beetle larvae? No thanks, until I need to. Some of them are huge, though,
which could come in handy. Pretty creepy, though.

hey there say.... not sure exactly, but from some of these strange "creature" shows, about critters, etc... it seems more folks get weird worms living in their bodies, from bad water, or raw fish, or raw pork... don't think they ever mentioned any trouble from larve in nuts, etc... ?

seems many folks in other countries eat this kind of larve... or some that are similar...

hhmm, have you ever noticed that WHEN you want to eat something odd by choice, it's fine and dandy... but when it's accidently been found to be in your swallow (and a tad too late, at that) it sure ain't no fun... :O

hey there mason108, say, here you go....

here is a worm/parasite link of interest...
http://www.shanti.com.au/body/parasites.htm

this quote came from the article... oh my:
If a person is very nervous at the full moon, they may have worms and or parasites, because worms get rampant during a full moon!

edit: either that, or they been hang-out at the local pub a mite too long... ;)

Right. Not until I read maggots did I feel nauseous. Aren't maggots pretty fat looking buggers? These guys were skinny but about the same length as buggers. I equate maggots with flies and dead meat. That is nauseating!

I haven't noticed beetle flies, but I do see these little drain flies occasionally. The bag was tied shut, but it wasn't a freezer bag.

This thread is making me gag, actually. Not enticing to read about worm guts spewing out the edges of your friends mouth on a dare. Really, that reminds me of college years and forcing freshmen to eat live goldfish to be initiated.

As long as I don't have to worry about being injected with some anti-parasitic or worry about having one burrow into my sinuses and eat my brain I guess I'm cool.

Thanks for the link, Neebee! More reason for me to be freakin' out! I think I'd rather be tripping on maggot acid.

Anders, MisterE, i was the guy there with dark black hair, a Filipina girlfriend (Joyce/Nala) and we were in the Orange/Gray tent over by Crowley and I was wearing a Kansas shirt one day. Climbed with Blue, Tommy and Ezra. I think we met briefly.

Ontheedgeandscared, you let us borrow your pint glass on Saturday night. Thanks again!

Ok I got the bag of walnuts and poured them into a pan and took pictures.

They aren't the best pics but give an idea. They're white, with little red heads and they seem to spin silk webs all over the nuts. Silkworms?? Weevils??

I got these nuts at the little Kabul Afghan market in Fremont, too. I wonder if they imported some random pests possibly.

Those are probably indian meal moth larvae. Google for it, you'll find a bunch of information. They're fairly common around the Bay Area. I highly recommend promptly disposing of that package and checking everything nearby. Once they've infested your pantry, it takes a bit of work to get rid of them.

I really hope I didn't eat one of those little buggers but I did kill them and I'm cleaning out everything now.

Seems to be a closed case. Check re: washing everything I eat from now on.

Yum @ moth larvae.
