Got this new itch to hunt for Sea Glass!
Guess it gets carried by the rivers and out into the oceans. Wave tumbling creates a perfect polish. Been hunting the beaches of Southern California for Red, Blues , Black and orange. Wiki says it takes up to 40 to 50 years to create a "frosted-polish". I'm having so much fun looking for the Sea Glass lately and just wanted to share.. post up if ya got any..
Hope others catch onto this human made hobby!
Enjoy!

day1
day2
day 2 was a lucky day! found a RED, ORANGE and BLUE..
considered extremely RARE! red's and oranges come from automobile tail lights..

my next hunt is to find a BONFIRE Sea Glass!

You'd have a Field Day at Glass Beach, in Fort Bragg ( CA )

For decades, the locals dumped their trash there. The big stuff has been cleaned up, but the gravel is mostly pieces of glass, ground smooth.

I don't remember the name of the street that takes you to Glass Beach from HWY 1, but there's a Denny's restaurant on the corner.

I know JustTheMaid does creative stained glass work, maybe she has some ideas for a project with the glass.

I'm drooling over the picture of that beach!!! Collecting sea glass has been one of my favorite past times since I was small...these days I'm restricted to a few days a year when we make it up to Maine and I can scramble around on the rocks in front of my grandpa's house. Everyone in the family knows to leave me alone until I've had at least a few hours of hunting (i.e., to unwind). It's so relaxing -- I love it!

I made this a year or so ago...the stuff starts to pile up. :)

Needs a dusting! lol

This is a thing? I have a friend in Wainscott that does it, and google informs me, it is indeed a common hobby.

Having seen some of her stuff, I believe it mostly originates from shipwrecks. The Hamptons wrecks, are numerous, Wainscott is on the direct path from Europe to nyc.

^^^^ probably so, but true sea glass also has all that history behind it.
Sea Glass hunting is huge in Santa Cruz presently because of the non stop high surfs we've had which results in exposing rich pockets of it. Just don't turn your back on the ocean!

Like Susan said, the sea glass hunting has been really good in Santa Cruz this winter. One massive NW swell after another here, has left the beaches nearly devoid of sand, and full of rocks and sea glass. Whenever I have been fishing off the beach or am walking out to surf I have been finding it, without even really looking.

Cool stuff

Of course I'm just jiving
I picked up buckets full of wind polished agates and jasper chunks just last weekend
My wife will sell it all for nice free cash.

I have a couple pieces of polished glass I picked up over the years.
I kid around and call it an emerald if green, red are rubies and blue are Hope Diamonds

One of the best places we found was the beach right along Santa Claus Ln. Not sure why it collected there so much. And the surf fly fishing along that stretch is good too. Not sure why people consider it a surf spot, its crappy.

Pyro, you said the oranges and blues come from auto tail lights. But they're made of plastic, which ,technically, is not glass. Purty, all the same.

Sorry, you said reds and oranges, not blues.

Beautiful!!!!!

Up in Maine there are mostly only tiny pieces to be found anymore -- to me it looks like you struck gold. Psyched there's someone else out there that enjoys this as much as I do. Please keep sharing your daily catch -- I'll live vicariously! :)

Edit:

When we were kids, we used to equate blue glass as finding "gold" and red as extra special and better than gold. Inevitably someone would wind up mad because someone else found a bigger piece of whatever and a seaweed or jelly fish fight would ensue...or if it got really bad, sand. Fun memories!

Revelation 4:6 and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.

Revelation 15:2 And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God.

hey there say, pyro... thank you kindly! sweet little green glass tree!, there...

say: had an idea, last summer, as to glass:
doing something with the broken glass i find outside
at times...
i have a really neat dremel drill from a good friend, and
it will round off sharp edges of the 'earth urban glass'
that i find, --not as safe-edged, as fun sea glass, mind you,
but i have recently thought to put some to good use, :))

might be nice for doing this:
i saw farther back, too, audry's covered vase...

so many nice things here...

well, here is my NEW TREASURE:
here is my 'glass sailboat' that i now how... will find a special
place for it: it is my memory of my dad, and his cal-20, that he
LOVED to sail, at santa cruz... we all love it, too!

thank you again, to all you glass, sharers, :)
and the glass music, too, g-b...

will go listen to it now... :)

edit: hope to see craig's glass, again here, too,
say, was it from land-sites, or sea?
as they are so crisp, and clean and clear...

very lovely, in deed...

I can't believe I missed the tree!!! So awesome!!!

The muppet has been begging to start making things again, so we'll have to sea (bad pun) if we can make a tree, too. OOOOOOOO...maybe one that could cover a tea light!

Will have to wait until it's too cold to climb outside anymore, though. :)
