For those of you who don't already know, climbing legend John Bachar suffered multiple spinal fractures in a tragic auto accident that killed Steve Karafa (President of climbing shoe manufacturer Acopa). More info here.

A website has been set up for donations to help cover the costs of John's medical bills.

It's important to note that for legal and tax purposes, we simply can't call this a raffle, but rather a donation that allows you to automatically be enrolled into a special prize drawing. -- I made note of this in red text on the { * Make A Donation *} page.

Tim,

The site looks good, works well (it managed my donation without a hitch) and your work (and the expense you have to pay to host it) is appreciated. Probably more than you'll ever hear from folks but I know that is not why you do it.

I really hope it gets enough incoming dollars to get some to Steve's family as well.

Thanks again, brother man.

While we're on the subject, everyone that's able to do so, needs to get out and GIVE BLOOD. I donate religiously, because it's just the right thing to do!

It seems 2 or 3 folks have received server timeouts on the PayPal side of things at this point, so if that happens, just send your donation directly to my PayPal account ((bachar.raffle@gr-outdoors.net)) and it will be adjusted accordingly.

You would think that sine they are a multi-billion dollar corp, that they could get some simple code straightened out... that or they run on an MS Server! ;~(

I am not sure where in all of the threads about John to post this question so rather start another I will try it here (and if people feel this is a thread hijack - please do not reply and I will delete my post).

I know that John will have many medical bills by why are these not being covered by California Workman's Comp? After all he was on his way home from a business trip????? Instead should we be contributing to the Bachar legal fund so that Workman's Comp will pay for the medical bills.

Tim-

I tried to donate a few minutes ago and kept getting rejected at the security check where you have to type the 5 character code shown. I tried a few times thinking it was case sensitive, and eventually got booted and told to use a different credit card. Is there something wrong or am I just an idiot? Thanks,

You can use a credit card directly through PayPal w/o having an account.

To do so, simply select the {Don't have a PayPal account? Click Here} link.

The reason for PP, is that we don't have to deal with the time and expense involve in setting up specific credit-card processing accounts. PayPal is quick, easy and secure.

I sincerely hope you'll reconsider.

* ATTENTION *

Since we've had multiple ropes donated, we'll hold a special "Thank You" drawing for one of them on Saturday the 16th...

Anyone that has made a donation by midnight of Friday Sept 15th, will be eligible to win a brand new 60m rope. No worries though, as this will not remove you from the big drawing! 8^)

The website reports that 263 tickets have been sold so far. Some at $25/each, some at 3 for $50. Assuming all were sold at the latter price, works out to about $4,400, less PayPal and shipping & handling costs. So there's some work to do, but a bit of time to do it in.

Hopefully the Mammoth event tonight will go well.

Bachar one day in Tuolumne says let's go down to Le Vining. We get into that red VW bus that he had back then. When we hit the downhill part of Tioga Pass he pulls out the sax and starts playing the thing using his knees to hold and steer the bus.

He pulled it out of gear and killed the engine, we're coasting now. Fukk! he's not using the brakes either. The psycho is gonna kill us on the bottom of the grade, that last turn will do it for sure. The speedometer is pinned at max and he's laughing and still playing that friggen thing. He tells me to hang on as we enter that last turn.

Yikes, we're gonna roll this stupid bus for sure.

Hah, didn't happen ...... but he did blow the generator. We coasted all the way to 395. Got to Le Vining and he had to buy a new generator.

Hahahaha

In the Elko Daily Free Press this appeared:

(Edited from a larger article)

ELKO — Six people are dead following three separate crashes on regional highways this weekend — and troopers say driver inattention, high speeds and failure to wear seat belts played a role in each of the tragedies.

Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Rocky Gonzalez said driver inattention and speed contributed to all of the crashes.

“The weather’s nice so the speeds are higher,” Gonzalez said. “When traveling long distances people need to remember to take breaks.”

.........

The third crash occurred on Sunday when a California man was killed after the vehicle he was in rolled on U.S. 93 about 33 miles north of Ely.

John Martin Bachar III, 49, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., was driving south on U.S. 93 at 7:25 p.m. when he allowed his Toyota 4Runner to drift off the west road edge.

Bachar overcorrected to the left, the Toyota went across both lanes to the east shoulder and overturned.

“During the course of the rollover, a passenger seated in the rear was ejected,” Gonzalez said.

The ejected passenger, a 40-year-old man from El Sobrante, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released until after next of kin is notified.

Bachar and a third passenger, Anastasia Elleni Frangos, 33, of Santa Paula, Calif., suffered numerous injuries. Both were transported to William B. Ririe Hospital in Ely.

Haven't seen any more facts on this. As a father, I have always tried to teach my son that actions have consequences. I especially am paying considerable attention to his progress learning probably the most dangerous activity that he will ever participate in.

I hope that the first story is entirely unrelated to the second, and that jb matured since then. But climber's are a narcissistic lot. We all pay for that one way or the other.

If you look at the list of prizes....which would you like to win the most?

I think for me the Devil's Tower one. It would give me a reason to plan a trip to a new destination..

I received an email earlier today from a climber wanting to know how to make a donation in excess of $50... I responded accordingly.

About 45 minutes ago, I received a typical canned email from PayPal stating that a donation had been made, yet when I quickly scanned it for the details to add to the website, I about hit the floor when I saw the donation was $500.

I immediately called this person to personally thank him on behalf on the entire climbing community, and during our conversation, I discovered that he's a new climber that's only been at it for a little over a year. It turns out that he was in the Mammoth area climbing last week, and happened to catch the slide-show and fundraising event, and was so touched by the out pouring of love and support from the climbing community, that he felt compelled to donate what he was able...

I also found out that he's currently tip-toeing into trad, so if anyone in the Bay area would like to "hook a brotha up" and take him under your wing, I would be happy to provide his contact info privately.

Anyway, I just wanted to share! :~)

Tim, it might be beneficial to change the title of the post if you're able to edit it. Now that it's 100% up and running it might catch more attention if you make a more bold statement in the title. Maybe Chris can give permission to the coding guys to get it "stickied" at the top? Not sure if that's an option in the format, but it would be nice to see this get a more prominent display.

Is there a way someone might put together some little flyer or something for this that I could print out and give to climbing buddies who may not spend much time reading about climbing on the net etc. and not know about this, but would likely love to donate?

I could just write the address down on scraps of paper, but a flyer would be great - I can obviously just print something out to give to people myself, but I was thinking more like, well, maybe someone might already have the info on what the raffle's for, the list of prizes etc. already somewhere so I wouldn't have to retype it all into a flyer... otherwise, I can.

Thanks.

$8300 in donations with just a couple of weeks left to go? Come on folks -- we've got to be able to do better than this. I know everyone on this site has probably seen it and donated according to their own means, but what about our buddies who climb but don't fritter their lives away on the internet?

I know climbing gyms aren't really our bag, but I'm heading over to all three of them in the PHX area this weekend to make sure something about this is posted where every one can see it. Maybe some of youse guys can do the same in your area. You can't get blood from a turnip, but that's probably a good indicator we should stop squeezing the vegetables and do a better job of promoting this where we can find some "live ones".

HOW IS JOHN DOING???
Anastasia

How is John doing?
Well, he is still wearing a hard collar and needs to be careful when he cruises around.
He has five vertebrae broken in the neck. The most dangerous injury is John's C1 Atlas fracture. That is critical for if it is displaced he will become like Christopher Reeve. The results of his neck injury have left his left arm numb. Also his left triceps and forearm extensors are flacid. Despite this he is walking around, doing normal things like grocery shopping etc. He can't go climbing, hiking or jump around but he is mobil in that stiff upward position of collar wearer. He can't drive for turning his head is impossible. He is unable to sleep well since the collar limits his comfort.

Next month will be his check up and we will see how well the healing has gone. Hopefully he will gain back function in his left arm. I believe if anyone can get over this, he will.

Thanks for everyone's help and generosity. It has both awed and humbled me. John himself feels unworthy of so much kindness.

Best Regards,
Anastasia Frangos

Depending upon what happens to me this week, it's highly possible that the drawing will not be able to be held at the date and location as initially planned.

I was in the hospital on Friday afternoon and again yesterday afternoon for a potential stroke, or rather a series of minor strokes. In fact, I just had yet another one a few minutes ago, which has left a bad ringing in my left ear...

I have another doctor appt on Wednesday, where I will then then be scheduled to see a Neurologist. I've already had multiple CT-Scans and X-rays since Friday.

At this point, I'm kinda in a holding pattern with pretty much everything, pending the outcome of my brain.

John has written the following letter, and asked me to post it on all of our behalf...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone! I felt I needed to say something at this juncture because I've been so overwhelmed by all your responses to helping me out after the tragic accident that took our good friend Steve Karafa and left me with a little broken neck. I haven't been too talkative lately since this whole thing still seems like a bad dream, but I want you all to know I am extremely grateful and moved by all your assistance and well wishes during the last couple of months. I don't know how to ever repay all your kindness but I will certainly try my hardest.

As you may know, I want to set up a Steve Karafa Memorial Fund with any extra money that has been collected and to use it in his honor to help out other climbers who find themselves in severe trouble. Unfortunately, the need for this help has happened all too rapidly. Our friend Tim Greene called me from the hospital the other day and asked for financial assistance from the very fund he had been organizing to help me out. I of course told him to use whatever funds he needed as his situation was and still is extremely dangerous. I know any of us would have done the same thing under the circumstances and I know Steve Karafa would too. I know these funds were meant by you to go to help me, but I’m asking everyone to understand why I gave some to help Tim Greene out. I myself will be OK, I hope that Tim will be OK as well but he still needs the help of neurological specialists and is having a very difficult time finding any.

Anyway, I want to say thanks again for all your support and generosity – I’ll never be able to repay it but hopefully we can start an enduring means to benefit unfortunate climbers through the Steve Karafa Memorial Fund. Hopefully I’ll see you at the crags soon!

Cheers, John Bachar

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I'm not sure what the future holds for me in regards to climbing at this point, due to the neurological mess I'm dealing with, I will be going through my gear in order to itemize and sell most of it in order to replenish the fund for the next person(s) in need.
