Today a local guide had his pack stolen from in front of the Indian Cove market. He left it unadvisedly just outside the door while he went inside. The pack contained his entire rack, rope, plus his guide school harnesses and helmets (which were not his, they belong to the guide school).

If anyone hear's of any Ebay or other sales of gear, please post up!

Gear thieves have a special place in hell.

I'm thinking large 2 axle cams up the a*# with no trigger wires. Have fun, you heartless bastards!

Some of us guides actually have two separate gear stashes, one for guiding, one for personal. I don't think he has this. Which means, he's f*#ked. His tools have been stolen to earn money.

That is a tough lesson to learn.

I don't trust too many people.

I certainly don't leave anything unlocked or just sitting on the sidewalk.

What is the list of gear that is missing?

Good thing that there is pro-deal and such.

Still sucks.

I don't have an exact list of gear, but the extra harnesses and helmets should be a clue. Most guide schools out here use apline bod style harnesses.

This is a really unfortunate situation and I hope against odds that the perps are caught.

That said, one has to be especially careful anywhere along HWY 62 -Twentynine Palms Hwy.
This corridor offers a quick getaway to countless dirt roads and roadways for thieves and other shitheads that would take advantage of others.
Keep your valuables out of view in locked cars, park where you can see your vehicle while you shop/eat if possible and remember that most folks traveling this highway aren't part of a tight knit community.
Be aware of your surroundings and don't be an easy mark.

There is nothing to feel sorry for. People who do things like this don't live anywhere other than inside themselves. They feel nothing for the people they effect or hurt.

Which is why they should be taken somewhere quiet, remote, and their existence ended.

I learned not steal as a kid. I got caught, and punished. As an adult, there is no excuse for it.

If you steal as an adult, your scum in my book. PERIOD.

Not sure what you meant by that.

I was thinking very clearly. If you steal, your a bottom feeder. I could care less about climbing gear or anything else.

I had my house cleaned out while my wife was on chemo. I can assure you, I am thinking quite clearly.

Did the guide ask the owner to review (and save) his security camera footage?

Seems that would help with the recovery. The people that exited the market
while he was inside would be 'persons of interest'

They will be even less thrilled when people don't shop at there store.

What store doesn't let you put your pack/bag inside at the front door or at the checkout while you shop?

Things have gotten dicier around here in the past 5 years or so. People have had gear stolen out of the back of their locked camper shells etc. I've done a fair amount of electrical and computer work for Sam's market and for their other store in Landers. You would not believe the amount of bullshit I've seen go down over the course of one day.

A couple of years back somebody parked their truck down behind Crossroads for a few days while they stayed in the park. He returned, truck was gone. I never leave gear or tools in the back of my truck.

Thanks Scott, I'll do some checking and find out what state he's in and let ya know.

"May your children live in interesting times"--- the oft-quoted chinese curse.

This is as bad as stealing a carpenter's or contractor's tools or his truck. And very likely the thief was not even a climber so the stuff will just go to waste as well.

Yeah it is. There have been a number of packs stolen over the years from various campgrounds as well. Usually the thieves are looking for cameras, wallets etc. Stolen climbing gear doesn't get sold around often because climbers are the only ones who will buy it. We usually know when something is fishy. My guess is most of the time climbing gear ends up in the dumpster or the land fill.

This guide lost his tools to work.

Maybe weirder, Robert, it gets taken to the recycler! Wouldn't that be funny--- cams and nuts being melted down for their aluminum at whatever the hell the rate is, like $.80???/lb. One of the worst aspects to this kind of crap is the way one feels for days after being victimized---- this gross and filthy, creepy insecurity. And of course tons of violent ideation about killing the perps.

I have never had climbing stuff stolen but many times I have had my equipment stolen. Maybe something like ten times in 50 years. Out of my house, out of my truck, while actually working in the public domain. And got furious every single time.

I know it first hand. While my wife and I were staying at my mom's in L.A. during my wifes Chemo, 3 meth addicts backed a small stake bed truck up to our house and cleaned it out. They also robbed 15 other homes in the immediate area over a months time. They even stole food. I drove around the "hood" for the next week knowing that some of our neighbors were questionable at best, and kept pretty shady company. Probably not the smartest thing to do, but I informed each and every one of them that if I found out they knew or had any involvement in the theft that they had better pray the cops find them first.

After they were arrested they confessed to it all. We got a few things back, but not much. They each received a 4 year sentence and a second strike. I WAS PISSED! They sold our and others belongings for dirt cheap at the swap meet and had a garage sale.

I lost all 5 of my computers I need for a large project I was working on. I lost several oscilloscopes etc. Not too mention all the other valuables as well. Insurance only covered a small percentage of the loss. That process took over 3 years to complete.

I have no sympathy for thieves.

Ok, I just got word that he pretty much got cleaned out. I'm going to donate 3 cams I bootied of a route a number of years ago, and make some super tape slings for him. If anybody else want's to kick in anything. Please do so. He's not only out his rack, he's also out guide school gear which he will probably have to pay for. That's not going to be easy when he can't work!

Put your BS aside and let's lend this guy a hand. Remember, we're supposed to be a community that looks out for one another, not just the famous names.

Thanks for any help. You can send me emails via the taco stand and I'll make sure he gets his gear.

Of course if this was 20 years ago,it would be different story. But this is 2011.

First of all if he/she is a LEGIT guide, all the gear should be covered by insurance.

In this day and age people are lacking COMMON SENSE and respect.Yucca valley,29 palms,Jtree etc etc of all places is not a safe place to leave any valuables anywhere.Think before you leave hundreds of dollars of gear outside anywhere in the public. It doesnt have to be jtree,it can beverly hills or melrose for all that matters, there is always some shady person around trying to benefit on someone elses hard work.I feel sorry for the guide, but it could have been avoided, others should take heed.

Ask the clerk if you can leave your pack behind their counter. Have yet to find a store that is not more than happy to accommodate in this way.

If the "pack" contained a full rack, rope and multiple harnesses and helmets it was most likely full size haul bag?

That Indian Cove market is pretty crowded space wise, I can't see storing a pack that size behind the counter. Maybe just inside the door though.

Blame the guide if you want. I blame the thief.

Did the guide not have a vehicle? If he didn't want to leave his bag in the back of an open truck maybe he tried to bring it in the store but couldn't?

Sure are a lot of holes in this story.

As many said, what "local" would be dumb enough to leave ANYthing unattended in our lovely burg?

Why not leave the pack in the car, and if no car, wtf are you doing at IC market on foot with a pack full of gear in the first place? Not like you're walking home from Indian Cove, and if you actually lived in IC, why not drop the pack at home first?

If helmets and harnesses are the school's, why using personal rack and rope to guide?

Sorry for the dude, getting jacked sucks, but something doesn't add up here.

Unbelievable, I'm starting regret I ever spent any time attempting to do anything for the climbing community at large over the years.

Here's the deal:

I show up for work on Sunday morning. I set up my area. I run into the guide in question. We chat for a few. I asked him where he was planning to take his group and how large it was. I told him where my group was and I was ready to go. At the end of the day, after I was finished I stopped by the Indian Cove Market.

I saw the guide and commented "Boy these full days with 10 people by yourself are a bitch. I'm tired."

He had an odd look on his face and he said "My pack just got stolen." I was kinda set back. I asked him what happened, and he told me the same story I told to all of you.

This all happened within a few minutes of when I arrived. He was VISIBLY shaken by it.

A few people have emailed me, thanks. I'll get back to you.

Thanks Andy!

It doesn't need to be a ton of stuff, just some things to help him get back on his feet. He dropped by Nomad and said his boss is gonna lend him some gear.

You are always welcome to crash here at the ranch!

By the way, just to clear things up, this isn't some CLOSE FRIEND of mine. It's a local climber/guide who I know, but don't spend time with.

I'm just trying to do the right thing by helping out somebody in our community.

Whether the guide service he works for has insurance for gear or not, isn't my business. Some do, some don't.

"Did the guide not have a vehicle? If he didn't want to leave his bag in the back of an open truck maybe he tried to bring it in the store but couldn't?"

No, he wasn't driving. I think he and his girlfriend have to share the car they have.

The saddest part was that the people who stole the pack were parked in front and he was going to ask them for a ride home. They were gone when he came out to ask, so was his pack.

His decision to leave his pack where he did was not exactly the best, but it still does not warrant this.

Somebody just left a few items at Nomad. I'm going to up my offer to some stoppers as well since I have SH#T LOADS of them.

The rest of you can question as you please, but I can assure you I would never make a request like this if I wasn't sure of what happened.

If you do not want to contribute, then don't.

The truth is, some of the people who are questioning this are typical of this site and will not post up their names to support their statements. I will.

Yes, be loving, open and trusting, but don't be unrealistic! One can still be loving, open and trusting while being careful. If it helps, remember that many crimes are one of opportunity, and people are sometimes weak-willed. Don't make it easy for such people to fail in doing the right thing.

Was a police report ever filled out?

If so, and this thief's sins catch up to him/her sooner than later, you stand a chance at regaining some or all of your gear.

Hate to see this stuff recovered at a rock house and end up at a police auction or end up in the thief's personal belongings bag at a holding cell (or morgue) somewhere.

Slim chances are better than none at all.

Sky,

I have a steel locker for ya, if you want, it is yours. I do not know what else you need that I have, do you maybe need a few brass wires?(not offsets though) They have history, and I came easily upon them. I can put a trinket or two on the biner and get them coming if only I knew what pro/trinket would serve you best.

sorry to hear this, sky. remind me to "treat" you to something you need at nomad next time i'm out.

josh has always had a mixture of good and bad karma. i think sky balances out an awful lot of the bad, but don't forget that sign you see at the edge of town: this section of highway adopted by joshua tree drug court. lots of users, lots of motivation for petty and not-so-petty theft.

It is really kind of thrilling to see how much response this thread is producing. For those of us who would be violent, the french have two sayings that are just perfect for this situation:

I'm going to split up the list into two categories, Donated, and Pledged. Donated means the gear has arrived, pledged means it's on it's way. This way we can keep everything neat and clean and nobody has to worry that their donations didn't get to where it was supposed to go.

So far:

Donated:
==

2/22 -- Terri/Happiegirl
Chouniard straigth gate biner
Rock Empire Cam - Black
Camp Nuts - #3 & #4

2/23 -- Ryan Rothacker - Nomad's (He's such a nice a young man)
21' of 7mm cord NEW
Omega Biner Locking
BD Neutrino wire gate biner
#1 Camalot dual stem - older
BD ATC XP belay device
3 BD 60cm Nylong slings - lightly used

2/23 -- Robert Fonda/rlf
8 Nylon tied slings (62" each) 11/16 webbing

Pledged:
==
2/24 -- locker
8 Trango Flex Cams(almost NEW)
3 Ovals biners

2/24 -- Louie Anderson
4 double-length skinny sewn slings - brand new
2 Mad Rock water bottles

2/24 Fattrad
Lowe Alpine pack

-----------------------------

I'll be heading down to Nomad periodically to help with the inventory of the items so the staff does not have to do it. They have enough to do already.

I will keep updating the list on this thread so everyone knows the score.

Also, if you do not see your Pledged items on the donated list, please speak up. I will do my best to ensure I keep the list updated in a timely fashion.

The goal here is for me to get Sky his gear as quickly as possible. This will likely mean daily trips to Nomad which is a bit of a drive, but very doable.

Thanks again for all the help folks!

Unfortunately I am still building my rack and don't have anything to donate. I think this is a good reminder to mark all of your gear. Because Zac's gear was distinctly marked with rack tags and nail polish I was able to get his gear back.

Sky,if you have not filed a report do so. Check the local pawn shops, ebay, and craigslist. Good luck.

I trully wish I had stuff to donate.

I agree!

I'm pretty much just reporting what's coming in from the pledged list at this point. The Unknown person will probably have a name soon. My chief concern and why I post updates is that I want to make sure the donors know their gear arrived and is getting to it's target. Especially since this is all in my name!

If you look at the list, somebody dropped of some gear and I don't know who it is. That's the "Uknown" person.

I'm pretty much shutting things down at this point, I just want to make sure what arrives is reported.

Well, if THAT isn't proof there's a god, I don't know WHAT would be!

If he gets his gear back? Keep that which I donated; the dud is a guide and gear gets a lot of use. Besides, a gift is a gift, with no strings attached - he can do with it as he wishes.

hey there say... perhaps is too late to mention this, but this
part of a post (by peter haan???) reminded me of something:

Maybe weirder, Robert, it gets taken to the recycler!

many folks DO try to get, by asking, or worse by taking, any METAL that they can find...

folks around here take it to scrap metal places for whatever they can get for it...

i once called a few places looking for a sundial that a NEIGHBORing family that lived behind, took, :(

my mom had bought it for me, :(
so it was sentimental...

the folks behind me denied it, but,
the scrap metal truck of theirs was always "full" and their son
loved to "fill" it for them... :(

NOTE:
the scrap metal folks around here, were kind enough to say that they'd
keep a look out for it, and took my phone-number, but obviously could not promise as at times they are just too busy...

but i was told i could come in and take a look, too, on the grounds...

sure hope this helps folks find gear, too, in the future, by
checking these places out...

god bless...
:)

edit: oh, also, in the old days, many store clerks would take the stuff behind counter for you, til you were done shopping... not sure how it goes, now a days..

Well, I do not have details, but I can recount the following story that happened to me. Sorry, but a little long winded:

After our house was robbed, several years after, Tucker and I were wiring a house in 29 palms. This one chap who was on the job site had been going on about how he was a recovered meth addict. Turns out he was facing 15+ years in prison for a number of charges including theft/burglary. We have something here in San Bernardino called Drug Court. Basically you get one last chance to clean up and walk on the straight and narrow. So he's telling me how courageous he is for cleaning up his act and that he only has a few months left and all the charges are dropped.

I told him my general thoughts on theft etc and he responded he understood why I have the attitude I did.

Of the many things we lost in the robbery, my Grandfathers 80 year old Transit was stolen. A real heart breaker. Gorgeous instrument. All brass, Leitz optics, beautiful wooden case, gone. I told him about it and he commented, "I SAW THAT AT A FRIENDS HOUSE A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO!". When I asked if he could make an effort to get it back he gave me the old sure, sure, no problems.

What a surprise I never saw him again.

The point of this story is that you never know who you will run into out here that may be connected with the shitheads.

"Not a mistake I ever intend to make again."

Getting burned like that sucks. Makes you feel like a fool, and there's undoubtedly some person out there who really needs the help that might not get it because you've been burned in the past.

Just remember...this is a reflection on them, not you. Perhaps being a bit more scrutinizing in who you invest your time in may be in order, but try not to become so jaded that everyone becomes suspect. That's just not good for your psyche.

I heard about this about a month and a half ago from the person in question - funny, they said that they left their pack outside Coyote Corner for just a minute while they ran inside and when they came back out, the pack was gone.
