You want FACTS?

Dean Potter is the man. Incredibly inspirational, forward thinking, CONSTANTLY pushing the limits of whats possible - you gotta give it up for this guy!

There are those out there (jackasses, etc) who seem to follow his threads with much negativity, but that is founded more in their simple ways of thinking. People always praise what a cool dude he is (met him in Yo Valley once, talked to a nobody like me like i was cool or something!), everything I've seen of the guy tells me he is a great asset to our community.

Post up good Potter stories - his article in Alpinist was one of my favorite, and my first trips to Yosemite were partially inspired by Masters of Stone V. Woo hoo!

Here's a really interesting video documentary that really shows a realistic side of these super athletes. I was surprised to find out how non-celebrity and realistic life is for a guy with such an aura.... and he comes out really humble too. Also some good Bullwinkle footage!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsagruTOXA8

anyway... saw something on another thread and thought it was time to give this man his props.

Davis, I agree. Dean is not only a really interesting climber and maybe a lot more innovative and imaginative than most top climbers, he is really damn bright also.

Well, I'm not happy that he had the cheek to rename Acromaniac rather than just take credit for the FFA (albeit on a constructively scarred crack).

But I don't like the way Moabophiles have scapegoated him as an arch fiend, if you will.

Dean is a very talented climber with visionary drive, but if I was as tall as him I could put up unrepeatable aid routes! lol

Dean Potter is a ET hybrid.

He is part Man and part Angel.

He is Nephilim. Perhaps he is good Nephilim?

He is out of this world in ability, strength and shear guts.

He exists within another dimension that mere mortals can only dream about.

He has Superman like abilities.

Truly incredible and inspirational.

Yeah DP is one of a kind and way out in front of most of us in three different sports. Inspiration to me and many others. Mistakes? Sure, but don't we all make some from time to time? In his case the good out-weighs the bad by miles and miles and miles! Long may he run...

Like him or hate him, you have to appreciate Dean Potter's drive, vision, quest for adventure, and climbing ability. And he's a pretty nice guy.

ps. MTucker, you appear to have your Potters confused? Hope this helps.

heather and i are big fans of dean. he is larger that life, one of the bravest souls i know, and our friend.
one time when i left my winnebago in el cap meadow for too long, range jack hoeflich was out to bust me, but dean, on his own initiative, found the hide a key, and moved my rig more that once to throw jack off track. how nice was that?
his season in patagonia when he soled cerro torre once, and fitzroy twice, and only roped up for one pitch, is remarkable. dean is the man, a cool dude, and a true sould searcher. shipoopoi

I think he's great-pushing the sport to a new place, way ahead of his time. What he's doing now, most of us may catch up to many decades from now.

Thanks for posting the link to the slack line video. Amazing. Potter is an inspiration. If he can solo those slack lines, what's stopping me from going for that next hold above a good bolt or a solid piece? I will never do climbs or other uber stunts like Potter, but we climbers all face the same internal struggles. We are united in overcoming our fears, uncertainty and weakness, whatever those may be.

I was especially touched by what Potter said at the end of the show about being happy each day regardless of the activity, the challenge. Finding a centered appreciation for existence is something everyone seems to struggle for, extreme sports junkie or not, but for people like Potter, I can see where finding happiness in the mundane would be tough slogging. I comes across and a genuine, thoughtful person, and I wish him only the best.

For me, the "guys" have been:

Warren Harding
Royal Robbins
John Long
Ron Kauk
Lynn Hill
Dean Potter
Alex Honnold

Climbers are a smallworld clicky group... like a small town. An old saying about small towns is it is easy to makes friends and enemies... the friends come and go, but the enemies you keep forever. I feel sorry for professionals in small clicky activities... they generally take more grief from those scrutinizing their success than a professional in a mass appeal profession, and without even close to the same monetary compensation.

I appreciate Dean Potter.

That said I worry about Dean, Alex, and others. They get paid so little and it appears the only way for them to get paid at all is to do mind blowing free solos. Peter Croft said something to the affect, if you're free soloing for anyone other than yourself, then you've had a cruel joke played on you. I worry that Dean, Alex, and others have too much pressure on them to free solo.

I have to Love Dean Potter for his vision, his spirit, and for approaching climbing in order to deeply explore himself.

Larger than life folks are always going to do something or be some way that rubs us the wrong way. I think, for the wild path that Dean Loves, his faults, like mine, are ones I can accept and forgive.

Don't be mistaken, what Dean does is part gift, part athlete, and part Magic

People who are unique and talented and clearly some kind of individual
genius will always have an entourage of enemies. It seems to be
the nature of things. It's hard to name a great climber who didn't have his
detractors. Every experience I have had with Dean has been a good one.
He has always been friendly and warm and has treated me with respect,
even though he has shot far past any levels I ever played at, in climbing.
Dean said some very intelligent things about my Gill film, actually
gave it some deep, sensitive thought. If I could think of something
negative to say, it would be so overshadowed by the positive, that there
would be no point in mentioning it. Yes I know there must be some things
that have irked others, but maybe there are two sides to the story.
I have always been amazed by some of the things people have said about
me, I mean the really false stuff. The true stuff, well they don't
even get that right...

Met Dean on Cathedral Peak this past summer after coming off the summit. I spent an hour watching him going back and forth on the line like if he was walking on a street. While I was thinking to myself I would never have the balls to even attempt such a thing, he leaped on top of the pinnacles barefoot, ready to walk the line. My hat goes off to him.

years back,I was having lunch at the deli where Dean was also seating on the table eating so I asked Dean what he thinks of all the recent incident involving base jumpers and he said" I am considering and rethinking jumping since recently too many people on his list got either hurt or died. I was also in the valley when the call came in that afternoon. wasn't a good news.

I shook his hand on Sept 18st 2014 - he was hanging around the bridge while my friend Jon & I were racking up with PTPP for a slow and kind've steady ascent of BttB. It felt kind've silly as Pete wrangled us together mid gear explosion. He assured us both that we'd walk away at least with a handshake...felt like a older relative wanting you to officially meet The Principal (or in this case The Dean) whom was in the midst of shooting the sh#t with the other teachers. Corny as the encounter was it nevertheless was a great pleasure.

He died on my birthday. As sad as it is his passing reminds me every year to live the way I see fit & dream mega big. Huge respect. RIP.

Dean Potter was/is a very special person. He lives on.

Face Lift '09 had plenty of climbers out to celebrate the book, "The Stone Masters, California Rock Climbers in the 70's. I asked Dean to sign mine.

"What should I say," Dean asked, "I'm not really an old school stone master?"

As we talked it became obvious, Dean was keeping alive the Stone Masters. That's how he signed it, Stone Masters, the next Generation. A humble, likable Dude who will Never be forgotten. Cheers.

If I mentioned this before, no matter, it bears repeating.
