"So, here's to the lost souls, the misfits cretins and wanderers! "
I am a lost soul.
"Some never find their way, never have even a moment
In the sun to shine like the brilliant stars that they are"
I did solo the prow. But in life its not what you have done, but who you are.

I think it was Robbins who said that climbing is really a sport for misfits. Even with its explosion in popularity, there's still much truth to that.
Here's to getting found!

One definition that I like is to be full of talent with no way to apply it. To never feel a full commitment to something.

A lost soul is a person with a gift that the world does not value.

This makes me think of Gogol
and Robert Service;
The Men That Don't Fit In
There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.
If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.
And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.
He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.
though I think Kermit said it best

Having a bad day, and it SO relates this to very topic, really trying hard not it get me down.
edit to add: I will get over it. Realize from living all these years that things have a way of working out, it just takes guts to let them work out. In a way, right now I feel like I am way above my last piece, legs are shaking and think I am going to fall....but as we all know, most of the time we get through those moves unscathed.

Ha. Last night, packing for my road trip I said to myself: "you know this won't change anything, don't you?" And I answered "yes but you need to go anyway."

Brian your comment, "you know this won't change anything, don't you?" And I answered "yes but you need to go anyway."
that rings true and its cool you realize this, have a great time, cause even though those things don't change (whatever it is for you), beats staying in the muck and mire of it all.
This is why I am heading up to the Sierra on Sunday, thinking of climbing Langley, but if I get lazy will backpack in some place up there to just get away from it all.

from Ulysses
by Tennyson
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known . . .
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains; but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence, something more,
A bringer of new things; and vile it were
For some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this gray spirit yearning in desire
To follow knowledge like a sinking star,
Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.

Regained back a part of my lostness in the past few days. Guided my boyfriend up Mt. Whitney (his first time and one of his dream climbs). It was superb to be up in the high alpine environment, there I find solace.
I also found solace in the fact to please another and to share the outdoors with another who totally appreciated my efforts.

Real-world refugees. Some of us, anyway.
But remember the words of one of the greatest lost souls of them all...
"It ain't no contribution,
to rely on the institution
to validate your chose art
and sanction your boredom
while you play out your part."
