I started this to respond to all of the Link bashing in the Arrested in Yosemite thread.
I personally have run into Link many times all over the Valley and every time has been an awesome experience.
He has always been extremely nice and informative and on top of that he is a great climber. Whenever I talk to him it is much different then any other ranger that I have ever encountered. I feel like I'm talking to a friend or fellow climber, not a LEO tool. From our many brief encounters I have grown to really like him as a person, and its really annoying to hear him get harrased by some people just because he wears a badge.
Not only that the man's life is committed to improving the climbing community. I mean when he is not spending his summer rescuing, informing, and being a liason to the Yos community he spends winters in the Himalaya developing hospitals and schools for Sherpas and climbers. And come on FREE COFFEE! When yer out there dirt bagging anything free is amazing.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth people, we could be stuck with LOBO or worse as a climbing ranger. I mean is there anyone on this forum who can honestly say that they have been "tooled" by Link. I bet we can come up with a lot more who have been rescued or aided by him.
I'm sure that I will get flamed by some for this post but you know what, as far as this climber goes, your complaints will fall on deaf ears.
ROCK ON LINK, YOU RULE. Thank you for all you have done for climbing in yosemite and around the world!
And don't let a few morons get you down, MOST of us really appreciate you.

I'm sure the Link detractors are FAR fewer in number than the Link supporters. You are doing a GREAT job Link.

He's a climbing ranger, it's his responsibility to present the ranger's views as well as the climbers.

Yeah Link, it sucks to be in the middle. But that's the job you signed up for. Fight the good fight man. Besides look at the office you get to work in.

I don't know if it is the job you signed up for but I appreciate your work and commitment. I'm sure it is a job no one else wants. Keep it up.

I won't go into details here, but I know somebody who was approached by Link in a law enforcement role. Link was totally appropriate and diplomatic, not turning his head, but not coming down unreasonably.

He is a fine human being. I would hope that if I heard he was stuck on a rock somewhere in the rain and snow, I'd drop everything and rush to help.

Agreed. I would too.

Not so sure about Mike S. though...
What is his story.
Does he climb? Is he a rookie?
Why treat a valley resident and park employee like a criminal?
Just because Lincoln is cool, don't be fooled into thinking the other rangers are as well.

Smidogg-

Thanks for posting this thread and putting a positive spin on this. Link deserves our support, since thats what he provides to us should we ever need it.

Link-

Keep doin' your thing. The majority of climbers appreciate what you do, and even the ones who don't appreciate it still benefit from it, even if they don't see it.

Just want to chime in on this thread. Lincoln does a wonderful job here, and without him i am sure that the climber/ranger relationship would be in much worse shape than it is now. Good job dude!

Lincoln,

I appreciate your willingness to post here on super-topo. I know I'm getting the straight skinny when I read your stuff and it's informative as well. Without you and Werner I'm afraid this forum wouldn't be of much interest to me.

Thanks,

Martin Z.

I think that other Rangers are also getting an unfair rap. The two I've met in Tuolumne this summer were gentle and considerate people to me.

Funny, now that I think of it, I've stopped having problems with the law once I stopped breaking it and openly carrying a high and mighty attitude. Go figure.

While we're giving high fives to rangers, I would also like to point out that George in The Meadows is pretty tolerant most of the time too. Just provide him his morning coffee and biscotti and he will leave you alone. Although he does make you take breathalizer tests when you are drunk, he doesn't do anything with the results except laugh at you for the hangovers you will have the next day. Except I think he was awed by .117 girl!

Shortimer's point?

Feed George and he'll leave you alone?

Are we getting the picture clearly here yet? Everyone who has worked with Link says he is a great guy, and the ones who never met him lambast him with a broad brush because of other experiences. This could not be clearer.

I have not met him personally, but have been reading posts by him for at least three years. I have thought that each and every one was clear-headed and reasonable, which I can't say about too many posters.

Bashing the guys who are doing a good job is certain to turn them off. When someone does a good job, you praise them in public.

Link, hang in there. Some may complain, but it sure seems to me that you are a great asset to all of the public in the park, and esp to climbers.
