"Jazz is not dead it just smells funny"
Some people like him for the satire and humour. I like him for some of the hip jazz/rock and serious compositional pieces.
Right now I am listening to The Purple Lagoon from Zappa in New York. Great work from the Brecker brothers on this one.
Another album to check out is Waka Jawaka, some seriously hip stuff on that.
Frank was serious about having a very tight band. George Duke talked in an interview about the time he had just joined Zappa, had not done enough homework and made a mistake on a piece. Frank stopped the band and said to the audience "George just made a mistake and he will now play the part by himself" George made sure he was always prepared after that.
Perhaps Kris Solem can comment as he did some production work with Frank.

get your tape recorders ready for some unreleased stuff..

24-Z
Sunday Mayhem 31 Midnight to Midnight

Hosted by Art Crimes, Jawbone, Max Level, Maybelline, Nancy Reagan, Studebaker Hawk, Ann Arbor, Bobo Z, and Burnt Weenie.

Frank Zappa, American Composer (1940-1993), has a catalog of over 80 official albums and several times that many unofficial ones. Numerous tribute bands, as well as some very brave orchestras, have kept his repertoire alive, both onstage and in recordings made after his passing. We can’t possibly play it all, but our crew of specialists will investigate their favorite aspects of the Zappa oeuvre.

Frank Rules! One Size Fits All, one of his best in my opinion. I saw Frank play several times in the early 80's, Halloween Shows at the Palladium in NYC where incredible.

I helped build a custom home in Bishop listening to Joe's Garage. Russ McLean was the contractor. TM Herbert was also on the crew. We dedicated the house to Frank. It was July of 1981. Man was it hot.

Good one survival.

I've seen it performed live.

George Duke is pretty awesome. Same with Ruth Underwood. Actually all of them.

Bruce Bickford's claymation is brilliant!

The movie "Frank Zappa/The Amazing Mr. Bickford" should not be missed!

Did I mis-spell "zappa"?

A YouTube search for "Utopia" doesn't bring up anything Todd Rundgren related. Only some sh#t from someone called "Goldfrapp".
