If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Idaho.
If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Stanley is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Idaho.
If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Idaho.
If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Idaho.
If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Idaho.
If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Idaho.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRUE IDAHOAN WHEN:
"Vacation" means going east or west on I-84 for the weekend.
You measure distance in hours.
You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.
You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.
You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).
You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how
to use them.
You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow
You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.
You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.
Down South to you means Utah or Nevada.
Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole shed.
Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.
You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

In rural Idaho people actually stop and remove rocks off the road that have fallen from rainstorms and such.
I've spent some time up in Riggins for a while.
In California people won't stop for anything ..... lazy stupid ass people who can't drive worth sh'it either.

Idaho is cool in a lot of ways and also has it's drawbacks. Working for a living can be a challenge, and I'm always amazed at how many people that don't need to work that end up in parts of Idaho. I came really close to buying some property in Wallace, Id. There is a lot of interesting history there, including mining and prostitution. The price of silver went up and now I can't touch it.

Now as I don’t live Idaho (but rather 12 miles on the other side of the panhandle border in MT) – I can offer you the kind of objective, local, and informed insights you kids really need:
Northern Idaho (think north of Twin Falls and the potato fields) -- as well as the extreme NW/W of MT -- is a hell on earth forever hammered by 8 month brutal winters, recurring annual plagues of locusts, angry armed skinheads, dazed meth heads -- also armed, and bars filled with legions of angry neo-cons quite anxious to stomp the sh!t out of climbo-hippy freaks like the likes of you, just for the sheer entertainment value.
There is no trout fishing worthy of the name, the whitewater is vastly overrated, the skiing is lame, and there are no climbs even remotely worth the drive. In all, nothing to see here.
As such, avoid it at all costs.
Yes, just move on -- nothing worth seeing up this way. Try California or Colorado.
If anything changes on this front – be confident that I’ll be the first to let you know…

you have, perhaps, missed the point here. idaho and montana are atroscious, barren, and desperate places. there is absolutely nothing here worth doing. hell on earth. a massive ashtray of nothingness.

if not, my local chapter of the Society To Prevent Texans And Other Such Tourists (STPTOST) _will_ find you and, well, quickly and permanently 'squelch' such outrageous misinformation.
there are no trout, or steelhead, or climbs worth doing, or anything else of any interest. best to stay south of I-80.

Over the course of about 10 fire seasons as a hotshot and jumper I spent a lot of time in Idaho. Also lived in Driggs for a winter (Spud Drive-In!). City of Rocks is awesome.

The two premier Idaho trips are the Selway and the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Shortly behind those are the Main Salmon and Hells Canyon on the Snake, and the Lower Salmon is nice because you don't need a permit. The crux of an Idaho private trip is getting the damn permit. My entire party struck out on a permit for the Main Salmon in August. No beta on outfitters since that isn't how I roll.
Kath, you should really get an oar rig and start doing private trips if you are going so often. You can get dialed in on the Flathead and Clark Fork, trade up to the Lochsa when you want something a bit harder, and then you are good to go for the long private trips. You can buy a used raft and all the goodies for less than doing a couple of commercial trips. If you have your own boat and are flexible, getting invited on trips is not too hard. I'm rowing my boat in the Grand Canyon in May with a private group that invited me along.
