My girlfriend thinks its totally goofy, but she's out of town for the weekend. And curtesy of netflix I am reconnecting with my childhood inspiration.

No guns,... just brains, duct tape, and a swiss army knife. (sorry right wing contingent)

No ambiguity. Bad guys look like bad guys and good guys look like good guys. (the right wing contingent should appreciate this;)

Doesn't drink (oh well, better man than me), but he was a bit of a climber.

Enjoy your solo time. We all need it. I love mine, and for better or worse have a lot more of it now.

My only MacGyverism was I once fixed an MG's broken plastic distributor rotor base with the turnicate from a snake bite kit and sport tape - the couple driving it managed to make the hour drive back to town on it. And it could've just been wishful thinking, but I think both she and I thought it was a complete drag she was with him...

Rad how MacGyver lives on as fodder for the sexual fantasies of Thelma and Selma on "The Simpsons". [gravelly voice]"...best MacGyver yet...he'll be in my dreams tonight..."

I work with a woman who was a producer on that show. I'll see if I can get any stories out of her.

I recall seeing an interview with RDA (MacGyver). His 'favorite' MG episode was the one where he was escaping in a truck carrying eggs. When the radiator got shot-up, he cracked some eggs into the radiator, which sealed the leaks...

edit: when I used to mentor budding lead climbers I would always mention that at some point they may be required to be 'MacGyver-Like' and think outside the box to problem-solve enroute.

there's a MacGyver episode where they edit Mike Hoover's short film "Solo" so that all of the closeups with a face shot show MacGyver and the rest are the original shots of Hoover...

Half the Macgyver episodes couldn't even happen anymore now that there's email. It's always about getting back the stolen microfilm.

Ax Minster anyone?

I used to know his double - friend of a friend. The guy who would stand in for him while they got the sets all ready. Nice fellow, apparently a near-ringer for the star. He was a bit mystified when I told him I didn't have TV and had never seen the show, or heard of it. But glad I didn't mistake him for the 'real' star - something of a public nuisance problem.

You see I think Peter Berg got it right in The Rundown with Duane Johnson. Take a guy built like a samoan/black ubermench. Establish MacGuyveresque credentials (ie he doesn't "like" guns) then GIVE him guns and a reason to use them!

(didn't hurt having Christopher Walken either)

There was a great article in the Times last week on low tech solutions to high tech problems. Good read MacGyver types.

I have my gum wrapper, duct tape and swiss army knife ready. I had a crush on him when I was eleven.
