Micah took a bad spill. One of the greatest people I have ever met and amazing climber. FA in Peru... He broke his neck in 3 places. He told me he is being positive.

I don't know what else to say

Good luck to Micha! Makes my neck hurt just thinking about it. I know I've come close to doing the same thing to myself. All those headplants into hard snow...and pitoning headfirst into the sand at the Wedge or Zuma beach.

Micah!
I love that guy... No! This news is horrible!

I too wish him a quick and complete recovery. If he needs visitors, (I make it a habit to visit hospitals with chocolate) drop me an email.
Beyond that, let him know "we" in the climbing community are there for him.

Dang it! I am not happy...

Crap! I love that guy! Glad he's going to be okay.

He and I started out climbing right around the same time. He went from newbie to rockstar at a speed I've never seen. He's one of those climbers with so damn much natural talent that he makes everything look so easy. And such an all-around nice guy on top of that.

Cheers to a speedy recovery and getting back on the rock again soon.

John Bachar first went to two separate hospitals: Both didn't do anything productive to help him with his broken neck. In fact the one in Utah actually endangered him when they released him with nothing but a collar to protect/secure his various neck fractures. Now that I think about it... We were on a plane, drove in LA traffic and just one slip, one fall, one mild accident and he would never have walked again...

The hospital that finally did put him back together and in a sense provided a miracle recovery was Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

I highly recommend Micah to go there...

Sending my best regards,
Anastasia Frangos

Kia (poop_toob) and I visited Micah all day yesterday (Tuesday, June 2). He broke his neck and destroyed his spinal cord at C5. What this means is that he is quadriplegic. He can flex his bicep and shoulders a little bit, but he can not extend his arms nor use his hands.

He is scheduled for surgery Thursday and Friday, which will remove the broken bones, replace them with spacers and stabilize the area around the injury.

Mentally he is all there and staying very positive. We are all hopeful that he will show some sort of recovery down the road. Nonetheless it is incredibly sad to see this happen to such a wonderful and loving person, especially when they are so athletically talented.

Oh god... I just saw this. I was simply lucky, and rehab is far from over.

My only advice (such as it is) would be to transfer to a good spinal cord injury rehab program. I don't know what's close to him, but one of the nurses in this New SCI forum would know.

Best wishes Micah, from one quad (albeit walking) to another.

I hope the new administration (whomever it turns out to be) does not hinder stem cell research.

hey there ...dear micah... i dont you know, but i will be praying... a friend of mine since years back has had to make that hard trek as a quad, and he didn't let it keep him down...

after he was up and about, he drove across counrty in his own van, and keeps up with the hockey that he used to love...

he said he always felt better trying to cheer other folks up... being that knew how low a fellow could feel...

may you soar to height that are unseen now, and may you have rich treasure that superceed any that you have seen yet...

get well in all the ways available to you, soon... and god bless

hey there ... say.. micah.. i did not know you had a family and children---but this is what i read...

says, later, when you can, some of the best healings come to pass by getting the kids involved and working together... it has offered some of the best inspiration as to on going therapy.. and helps them learn not to be afraid....

of course, this must come a bit later... but god bless you so much with this rich family that you have by your side...

kids are sometimes a very miraculous medicine, for both body and soul....

i will be praying... god bless, once again... i am very sorry that you are hurt....

My understanding is that during the first few weeks, the true extent of the injury cannot really be known, due to what is called spinal shock. According to this article, some amount of recovery is the rule rather than the exception.

Micah sounds like the kind of guy who will keep fighting. Positive thoughts for the surgery.

I would also like to send a card.

Again thank you to everyone! I'm amazed at the quality and dedication of his friends! Micah is being sedated for the next few days because his second surgery was so intense. He'll mostly be sleeping. I know we do need a few good friends to help cover shifts of sitting by him, mostly at night (one at a time) . This isn't the time to just "visit" as he needs quiet and sleep, but our family is having difficulty balancing everything and keeping someone by Micah's side at all times. Please call Simeon if you can sit for a while, only good friends please.
By the way, we're organizing several benefits, La Jolla Comedy Store on July 10th. Should be a blast and I think we might be able to wheel him in! We're going to have coctails, prizes, and great company! Something positive to look foreward to.

My mom opened a trust account to help pay for expenses and take care of Micah's 3 kids, here's the info:
Washington Mutual, account # 494077098, Micah Retz.
Anything will help.

Again, thank you for your love, prayers, and support!

Hi Guys. I visited Micah and his family on Sunday. As his sister Meggin posted above, right now he is recovering from surgery, under heavy medication, and mostly sleeping. He will remain sedated until they are able to remove the apparatus from his throat that is helping him breathe. Theres not much else to say until then.

I would like to put together a climbing slide show for the benefit on July 10th. If anyone has photos or videos of him climbing, please send them my way: darshahlu@gmail.com.

Also, does anyone know how to get a cellphone photo off my cellphone and onto the computer?

Thinking positive will make all the difference for him. If we all visualize him walking and healed that will manifest. If we don't perhaps he wont. The power of positive thoughts are attractive to the healing process. Positivity makes all the difference. He can get through this no matter what.

hey there MEGGIN !!!! ... SAY, i have a surprise that i hope will help....

i just got some shirts that were donated to the cat pound (along with cat food)---from danny windsor---he is not in the credits, but he played one of the FLYING MONKEYS in the WIZARD OF OZ....

i just called him, as he is a friend, being that the shirts just gave me an idea:

he said for me to come over tomorrow and he will give autographed pictures of him, as the monkey, and a few other things, plus a signed note, so folks will know that the clothes are his....

some hawaian shirts, and two custum made ones from the 70's...

you can auction them off---he is letting me do this for you, as it is a benefit, as he does not like doing this for self...

here is the local news, of the show that he recently did with betsy palmer, his long-time friend....

now, perhaps if you can put out some flyers advertising these things from the "actor from the monkey" in the oz movie, there are many strong fans out there that would like these things...

if you need to call me, use my email, and i will give you the phone...

neebeeshaabookway@yahoo.com...
aslo, i will email you...

this was very kind of him... i really think if you put out some flyers, this will help in some way...
i am printing him out the info, as well, but he is my friend, so he trust me....

i will mail it all tomorrow night....

and my dream catchres and jewlery, on sat. night...

Just peeked at the new website .. it sounds like things are looking up : He can feel as far down as the top of his legs. That is fantastic !

btw Technically, a 'quadriplegic' is anyone who has suffered damage to the cervical region of their spinal cord. There are however differing degrees of 'completeness'.

It sounds to me like Micah's injury is incomplete, which is a really good thing. Rehab is going to be tough, but he sounds tougher.

The way it was explained to me - as the swelling near the injury site declines, function will return. It will take time.

Thinking positive thoughts.

I did my 5 weeks of spinal cord injury rehab at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (scvmed.org) in San Jose. They and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (rancho.org) in Downey are supposed to be the best SCI rehab programs in the state.

Later on after Micah gets out of inpatient rehab care (and it's going to be a while) you might look into Project Walk (projectwalk.org) in Carlsbad. I believe they have a trial week.

Best wishes !

i have been so happy to hear your success story... a friend of mine from san jose (who oddly lived in michigan before i did).... well, he never got well from his broken neck and is a quad in a chair.... but he drove from mich, to san jose to live....

really neat guy, yet, from what i have recently learned, he is going down hill---he broke his neck when he was 17....

i keep rooting any and all guys that have accident, because the good lord has been so good to those we know and love through their adventures, and they have had some "awesome" saves..... THUS is only RIGHT to pass this hope, love and encouragement for successs to those that have been hurt, and face hard things SO THAT THEY will in turn get some kind of A RICH SAVE in the hard areas that they face....

everyone needs folks in there corner.... a good team can reach the finish line, no matter how long it takes...

thaks rhyang...

neebee - thanks for the email. I haven't gotten a chance to reply as yet, but I wanted to mention a few things here.

Spinal cord injury is irreparable damage to the central nervous system. Once CNS tissue dies, it cannot be repaired or healed. Experiments in rats don't translate to the human body as yet. Maybe someday .. but for now SCI means permanent disability.

I've got a list of things about my body that I wish worked properly after my accident, but it's not really important to mention them all here. Suffice it to say I'm getting on with my life despite them.

The rehab program I went to had a good peer support program. Every week paras and quads from the community came and visited with new patients. These are people who have been living with SCI for many years. It was led by a guy in a powerchair who had broken his neck nearly 20 years ago. They had a lot of advice and support for us.

I remember one guy who had broken his neck in a diving accident and was a quad as a result. I was in rehab in September, and he had just been to Burning Man -- he'd ridden his powerchair around the playa. Seemed like he'd had a good time.

There was another guy who came to visit me who had become a para in his teens due to a tumor in his spine. He'd gone on to get an engineering degree, worked for a defense contractor and owned his own home. He had a lot of advice for me about life in a wheelchair. He brought me news clippings about Mark Wellman's ascent of Half Dome and had himself done quite a few trails in his chair.

I'm only 11 months into recovery, but I know it is going to take years and there is still a lot of hard work ahead. Life will never be the same as before. I am told that the process of "rewiring" in the CNS takes years, and a lot of hard physical work to retrain. Recovery from SCI is rarely ever complete - people almost never get everything back they had before. There are no guarantees, except that if you don't try you don't succeed.

Just a couple of weeks after the accident I could not feed myself, dress myself, or use a bedpan on my own. I could not even sit up in bed without help. What would have happened to me if I had been parked in a nursing home ?

On a related note, here's a news article from earlier this year :

All proceeds help support Micah and his children

On June 1st, 2008, Micah, an Alpine local, avid rock climber, and single father to three, injured himself while diving at Cedar Creek Falls, in Ramona, Ca. He was flown to Palomar Medical Center and was declared a quadriplegic upon admission. He broke his neck and is currently undergoing extensive medical treatment. Due to his physical, mental, and spiritual strength, he has already shown movement in the arms and has sensation in his legs. If anyone can walk away from this, it will be Micah. We are trying to raise enough money to cover medical expenses, take care of his children, and send him to a promising rehabilitation center. We, his family and friends, have no doubt that if there is a way, he will find it!

I met Micah two Winters ago on dinner ledge on the Column. It was the coldest day of the year when all the citrus froze and he was doing Southern Man I think. We listened to music and enjoyed the great winter views of Half Dome. I was really sad to hear that he got injured. I am however really glad he didn't knock any rocks off from the final couple pitches, otherwise I might be taking donations! There was sand and pebbles raining down all night and we slept in our helmets. He must be a graceful climber.

I enjoyed meeting him and wish him the best recovery. I encourage any others to donate a bit to his fund. Every little bit helps. Many of us (even with insurance) aren't far from being in need of help due to sickness or long-term injury and it is a blessing to be in the position of helper!!!!! Good luck dude!

I went to visit him last Sunday and he is doing very well. He is able to brush his teeth! As a matter of fact i had lunch with him and he fed himself. Then we watched a movie in the theater. He's on his way to recovery but still a long ways, slowly, like a tenuous aid climb. He is inching his way. No mixed climbing for him this season. Maybe next season :-)

He still needs help raising funds. ANYTHING would be appreciated!

Bump! I am very glad to hear and cheering him on for so much more. Keep the faith for "the mind shall lead where the body will follow." Keep visualizing succeeding the next step and going for it. If cancer has taught me anything, it is that we really can overcome the extreme.

Yet another example of Medusa (aka-Jeff Constine) being a complete d#@&%ebag.

Dude, can you not denigrate others for even a moment? Your negativity is a strong sign of some major psychological issues you seem to have. Stop casting shade on others. Please?

Come to think of it, Beth isn't even posting on this site anymore. People like you drove her away.
