DR is the man and a great teacher. My first trip to yosemite to climb was spring break 1980. I had just gotten my license and rick lovelace and I went for spring break. my parents were ok with me climbing but wanted me to take a course to learn the skills and not die trying....
So i took a 2 day course and DR was my teacher...after the first day he took me to swan slab boulders and showed me some problems and taught me footwork drills.. that day opened my eyes to bouldering and i then figured out that climbing was the best thing in my life...
So Don Reid, hats off to you and for teaching so many climbers in your day!!!

Donny used to live across the street from me. He got my old-skool, front-load, glass door washing machine when I finally had to leave JT. One of the folks who made it great to live in the place.

Dancing to Donny's Band at Cashner's parties was some of the most fun ever. We were all having the fun of five guys... Each!

Donny's rendition of the a song (which I can only remember modified words to) was the finest tune to sing on a long El Cap solo: "Hoist the bags up on the Jolly Roger".

Donny came to Yosemite on a bus .....

He stepped off that bus with two suitcases and street shoes.

He looked up and said; "WOW"

Don guided me and a friend up South Crack when I first started climbing.

On the way back in the car, I commented about how the guidebook was difficult to follow, that we counldn't find the climbs we were looking for. He was all cool and casual, "oh really".

I realized after we dropped him off that he was the author and I felt like a total idiot. What a gumbie.

I've run in to him a few other times and he is way cool and down to earth, a genuine good guy.

heard it through the grape vine that Donny is a bit down lately, especially on the guidebook project.

He's done a terrific job over the years on that guidebook, what a lot of work, and mostly a labor of love I suspect. Given the difficulties of such a huge project, and the normal give-and-take of dealing with a publisher I can totally understand getting into period of very low motivation.

But put on top of that the apparent lack of support from the community, whose desire for a new comprehensive guide is strong, well, Donny's stuck in the middle with negativity squared.

No matter what happens, Donny's contributed hugely to Yosemite Valley climbing over the years, not just as a guidebook author. He is still gives enthusiastic encouragement, to me at the Bachar memorial on climbing the obscure... he totally deserves another round of appreciation.

Thanks Donny!
