Robert H. Bates, teacher, author, mountaineer and
first Peace Corps Director in Nepal, died on Thursday,
September 13, in Exeter, New Hampshire. He was 96.

Over the past few years when visiting the east coast I would stop in and chat with Bob and Gail. Amazing folks. There are only a few of the old guard left if you get the cahnce visit with them do it.

I always dug "Savage Mountain". The genuine camaraderie of the Americans on K2 in the 1950s probably would jar some contemporary readers of mountaineering literature (see, e.g., "Into Thin Air").
