I have known, admired, respected and loved Jorge for nearly thirty years. He is a true climbing icon. He will be turning 70 this Feb. He is still going strong. What a MAN! Happy Birthday Jorge. I will be there for the party.
Maybe some of you out there can post some Jorge stories.

Jorge Urioste took our kids on a nature hike so Julia and I could relax and enjoy the climb Birdland. I don't know if my ankle-biting rug rats will ever fully appreciate what an honor it was to be tour guided by a legend, but Julia and I still break into perma-grins thinking about that day. THANK YOU Jorge!

Three cheers for hyperbolted multi-pitch routes!

Just being a smart ass. I don't know anything about him other than those Red Rocks routes he did.

I met Jorge for the first time several years ago. He is a wonderful person, excellent climber, visionary first ascentionist, and probably the best host in the entire climbing community. Thanks Jorge!!

Jorge & Joann did the first of Epi on their own. John & Lynn did the second of Levitation, another Urioste masterwork.

"John & Lynn did the second of Levitation, another Urioste masterwork."

Not actually the case. Jorge and co. had done about eight pitches, and had those fixed in preparation for going for a final push and the first ascent. At Jorge's request, we went up and free climbed to the high point--basically the whole thing. Later, Jorge returned and finished off the route on aid, then we went back with Joanne and free climbed the whole thing.

Jorge pretty much opened up all those big face routes early on. That's a whole lotta work, so good on you JU.

I knew him and Joanne only briefly way back in time, but they were charming and wonderful people to be around. I remember Jorge's enormous plywood and bungie cord friends, I think they were for aiding Ixtlan? I had the impression that he wasn't necessarily a gifted freeclimber, but really loved climbing and was willing to work hard and long for other's benefit.

Around the same time, the two had returned from South America (Bolivia?) visiting Jorge's relatives, where the old aunts of the family had spun and knit a sweater from the shed fur of their large white dog, a Samoyed I believe. It was the most gossamer fuzzy thing imaginable, like cashmere squared. Report was that dog fiber was really tough to spin, and not recommended to be worn in the rain lest you smell like a wet dog.

Like Off White, I met Jorge many years ago. Always a friendly and gracious person who exhibited a great love for climbing and the Red Rocks. He and Joanne had great vision, exploring and establishing many great long routes.

Happy Birthday.
