So I was watcing the Dano segment from Masters of Stone 5 on the net:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=994500903799016230&q=climbing

(awesome)

and I got to thinking....will anyone ever do this again?

did rope jumping die with Dan?

Dano pioneered the concept and proved that it could be done. surely there are folks out there with the same amount of whatever it takes to jump off something that tall tied to a rope...is there a reason that it doesn't get done? bad juju? park service?

a mistake was made, but seekers learn from mistakes and go bigger. I think Dan maybe would have wanted it that way...

somebody will repeat it eventually....and I sure as hope to be there to watch!

RIP Dan, thanks for the inspiration!

I can appreciate what he was doing from a spirit perspective in terms of turning around and just getting in the face of all that we seek to avoid as climbers. Especially that he tried to do it in the same surroundings. But while designed and rigged about as well as one could (and my experience is only from tightwires over the years) I have many serious, technical reservations about the entire concept, particularly diving onto horizontal lines. My hope is that anyone wishing such experiences take up skydiving and learn those skills well enough to base jump. It is also not risk free by any means but the rigging is far more appropriate to the essence of the experience I believe he was after. Again, from my own tightwire, skydiving, and hangliding experiences I think I have some idea where he liked to go; I just think trying to segue there with our gear is inherently not the ideal path...

Dano was very cool and calm despite his eccentricities. I enjoyed his companionship on many a mission and to this day can't get over his interest and passion for everything: TO SAY HE TRULY LIVED IS A GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT...I still get "chicken skin" when I think of him... RIP Dano, Frank, Aaron and MC...

Although its been awhile, we jumped numerous times off the bottom of a bridge, its a fun way to spend a morning or night!
All you need is your climbing gear, we preferred the pendulum swing over the self induced whipper.

I have done a fair amount of rope jumps and bungee jumps. I tend to focus on bungee for a number of reasons.

Advantages of rope jumps; more free fall for the same jump height (unless you pendulum), MUCH lighter/easier to put together gear

Advantages of bungee; rebounds- one of the most fun aspects of jumping IMO, less Gs - 3Gs max so you can do acrobatic stunts (very fun for me) and jump straight above your anchor (ever see the rope jump where Dano get's knocked out from the impact?), and greater safety factor.

One of these days, when I can find some time, I want to setup a jump in Yosemite.

(ever see the rope jump where Dano get's knocked out from the impact?)

that is in the video above...it is the one where he skateboards of the sandstone cliff and looks like a rag doll at impact.

The downward Superman will always be as bad as it can possibly get.

"Lambone, so he got knocked out from the G's he pulled?"

Um...I guess. It may have just been the whiplash and impact force on his body, not sure if that is the same thing as G's.

He describes it more in the full length video, it was one of the earlier MoS vids, II or III I think.

Yeah, the superman off the bridge is baddass!

Ha! I just watched MoS 5 again the other night... Was commenting on Superman being the shit! I'd like to see the full length on the skateboard jump...

He knocked himself silly with the skate board when it snaps back and whacks his ribs.

The "downward superman" is called a "bat drop". ;)

Did you notice in the video of the LT jump how many people it took to rig up the jump? A person who is going to pull something like that off again not only will have to have DanO's 'sense of adventure' (or whatever you want to call it) and his rigging skills, but also the powerful personality that he clearly had.

We used to jump full rope lengths from under the span of the Cold Springs Bridge on Hwy 154 outside Santa Barbara in the early '90s. Raker and Woodward (J-dub) rigged it one moonless night the day before I got married and dragged me up there after sunset with a blindfold on...

John - great drawings.

On a side note, does anybody ever remember the 'stunt dudes' that attempted to do a giant pendulum swing off one of the Flordia quay bridges? I remember watching it on TV. The fools decided to go with a thick STEEL CABLE. FOUR of them attached together. Naturally at the top of their giant swing the cable breaks and sends them plumetting to the water. All are unconcious and two are with severe spine injuries. I remember thinking how this was a perfect example as how to things SHOULD NOT be done.

RIP Dan, thanks for the inspiration!

Ditto that-

Used to take girls under the Forest Hill bridge when I lived in Auburn. I was talking about the suicide stats (romantic, huh?) for jumpers moments before someone flicked. Heard a whistle and saw a body falling, scared the sh#t out of me until I saw the pilot chute.
