Kayak or heli would be the fun way in...

check out http://7riversexpedition.blogspot.com/

"The Devil's Postpile is the supposed hardest run in California and was first run by Royal Robbins a long time ago.

The river flows through the "Crucible" gorge past the Ballon Dome Batholith."

Once again, just goes to show, Royal's the man.

I have a number of friends who have kayaked and/or portaged through the Balloon Dome Gorge. Kayakers go at fairly low flows: 500 or 600 cfs about. In recent years it has been getting paddled several times a season by different groups.

For a number of years a group out of Fresno would swim/snorkel that gorge in late summer. Not sure what kind of flows they needed. They always told me that someone was going to get killed in there eventually, but I don't think anyone has yet. I don't think the swimmers were going all the way to Mammoth Pool, but were launching from one bridge and exiting at the other. Sheeps Crossing to Cassidy Crossing? Something like that.

Google earth certainly does have amazing views of this section, one of the few areas in the sierra that does has such excellent high resolution images. The 3D effect is astounding also. You can zoom down into the canyon, move along the river and the views of the walls move past appropriately. There are some fairly small errors in matching the elevation data with the images. You can see in spots where the image of the river seems to flow up on the sides of the walls.

Hey Dingus,

I too am enjoying your Balloon Dome story in the SSCA bulletin. Have not finished it yet. Figured I would leave you almost dislocating your shoulder in a narrow slot for a few days!

The old Southern Yosemite guide lists 5 climbs on Balloon Dome. The Beckey Route, IV 5.9 A3 ~ Boku-Muru, III 5.9 ~ East Face, III 5.9 ~ West Face, IV 5.9 A3 ~ Southeast Face, class 3(descent). I have heard of other activity out there over the years but can't quite remember who or what?
