Yep, it seems to be true, at least while the aerial logging is happening in the Fred's Fire burn area. Was there last weekend and the Chinooks were hauling logs 150 meters from The Fracture, so the loggers will ask you to leave. There is a notice from the Forest Circus that states you will be fined $5000-$10,000 for just being there. This notice is new since last weekend. So, be careful.

too bad...this doesn't affect spires or any other areas around there does it? i realise phantom spires didn't burn, but where are they taking the logs?

The closure seemingly only affects Sugarloaf. They are flying the logs to a clearing just west of the school, from there trucks take 'em wherever. Japan, most likely. All surrounding areas are not flagged off. Hopefully, the Forest Circus will know how long the closure will remain in place.

I drove by on friday and the trail was still roped off, but I didn't see the chopper flying. You can still make it up to the spires which might not be possible in a few days.

I talked to the Forest Service and they said there is no guaranty access will be restored in January. They will review the situation and possibly post a new closure.

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:
...
3. Persons engaged in a business, trade, or occupation in the area.

So, basically, if I have a permit to guide on the Eldo, I can bring my clients? Sweet.

Any idea if the Forest Service will really open it in January?

I wanted to give Hardings Chimney a go soon, does the East Face get lots of snow, or is it OK most of the winter?

Steve,

Harding's Chimney will probably be cold and possibly wet. Yet, that's only if there's snow on top. But it's in the shade (as it's a chimney), so dress appropriately. Oh yeah, a bit runout on the second pitch. Bring BIG stuff!!! Have fun.

Drove by Sugarloaf on Wednesday, again yesterday. The chopper was in the air, hauling logs, both days.

Phantom Spires looked dry at that time.

Anyone try Phantom Spires this weekend? Might meet my brother (on his way down from Idaho) there next weekend if we don't get more wet weather...

I climbed at Sugarloaf two weeks ago. The closure is over for now. But there are 100s of huge logs marked for aerial removal. I expect they will close the area again once logging activity resumes.

It was definitely snowing at that elevation last weekend. I don't know how much but things could still be pretty wet.
