A few weeks ago I had a training class in Phoenix. In the middle of the week, I got a great tour of Camelback Mountain with local denizen Manny. We raced against sunset to get up a 5.9 face route he put up, while approaching a classic route on The Monk.
Manny: The man, the myth, the legend:
The hike from the parking lot is pretty short... equivalent to the shortest Yosemite approaches, but not as nice as some belay-from-your-campchair Joshua tree routes:
It was so cool to see this kind of place, after sleeping in a tent in the snow at the base of Braille Book in Yosemite days before:
There is a nice variety of rock textures, but much of it is extremely featured like this:
Here's Manny following me up the first pitch of his creation:
And then heading up the second pitch:
We had to hustle a little bit to keep up with the sinking sun:
And head up The Monk:
Yours truly prepping for the rap off the top of The Monk:
Manny bringin' it home on the last rap down below:
Saying goodbye to the sun:
Me flailing on the Chipmunk... this shot moments before I landed on my arse and back (but my hands were able to take most of the fall):
And a parting shot of a beautiful desert evening before heading over to Four Peaks Brewing Company:
