I am planning a south to north JMT trip leaving around August 10. i have no permit for starting at Whitney. I am hoping to "wing it" and hope to get in. Anyone know what my chances of a walk in permit or cancellation?? Anyone out there have a permit they are not gonna use??

For S-N starts, you will need to get a permit at the Lone Pine Forest Circus office, just south of Lone Pine - permit will be good for the whole deal. Permits for Whitney are scarce, so queue up early - I met one guy who started out of Cottonwood Lakes because that's the closest place he could get a permit for.
Now, you can also be creative and get a permit out of a much easier area a few days before (continuing on through the JMT of course), and then maybe when you are hiking up through the Whitney zone of alpine disaster and get stopped by the gendarme, flash you permit and explain how you came out to resupply...

I was thinking about that option of getting a permit at Cottonwood or Horseshoe and starting back at Whitney and if needed pulling the whole resuppply act. Don't realy want to do that but.... So mid week enrties will give me the most chances?? I guess that makes sense, plus I am going solo which makes things easier too. Sweet.

Lots of strategies regarding Whitney have all been gone over by the authorities.

If I were doing it I would go in from Horseshoe Meadow and camp at Guitar Lake. The hike from Guitar will be much more enjoyable at night and you can be off Whitney an hour after sunup. How closely that scenario is monitored, I don't know. Those who have been on Whitney are also more likely just to walk by.

Indeed it may be the time has come for the standard JMT to be modified.
