I'll be visiting Santa Cruz in July, but won't have much spare time. Will it be too hot for Castle Rock and Skyline during the day? How about early evenings? (Leave after work and spend a few hours climbing...)

Depending on the day, it won't be too hot. Mornings would be rather pleasant probably. It might be too hot to crank out desperate problems like 'The Bates Eliminate', but you can climb. Bring your bug spray.

You should be able to stay in the shade most of the day in the CR area. Bring a good brush as the holds tend to get pretty greasy by summer. Keep a low profile or you might get to meet the infamous CR tool.

Bugs are only annoying in the spring and then really only by the underworld (due to the 100 tire mosquito breeding ground near there). There is lots to do in the shade and it's good early in the day or late in the day on a hot day. Much of the summer it will be fine all day long. On a hot day you won't want to climb midday especially in the sun.
Watch out for the tool. You will get a ticket if your vehicle registration is not in order, or you park after sunset, or you park ANYWHERE it says no parking, or yada yada yada.

On really HOT days Aquarian Valley and maybe Skyline Slabs is a good option. These crags are down the road from CRSP.
Shady Rock (CRSP)is guess what, ALWAYS shady and although it has shorter routes, has a load of them.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, just do it!
Oh, are you bouldering or climbing, that makes a difference kinda?
Be prepared to meet Miles Standish too, he's one-of-a-kind!

bluering: I'll be climbing -- often with kids, so easy routes, not too hot weather and nice views (since we spend a lot of time wasting time) are key.

Shady rock is a good choice then. So is Underworld. Shady has a bunch of easy .10's that have cruxes at the top. Underworld has some easier stuff on it's side and some super fun .10's on it's main face.
Lyme Disease Rock across the street from CRSP may be a good choice too. Indian Rock is usually super-crowded.
