Okay this topic was threatening some seafloor spreading magnitude drift, back on the Repoman Thread, so to keep that coolness going, let's examine the man, the life, the times of Jonathan Richman, right here.
Quirky performer, song writer, he has an equally quirky body of work. His one time band, the modern lovers, formed with future Talking heads musician Jerry Harrison, among others, first released Pablo Picasso, The Ice Cream man, Abominable snowman in the Market, and others that turn up from time to time.
Since sometime in the nineties he's probably most famous for this;

Didn't manage to get the clips from the movie, in which he acts at intervals...
But there is some other interesting stuff out there.
'I was dancing in the Lesbian bar'

Roadrunner

Pablo Picasso, covered on the Repoman soundtrack.

Maybe someone else can link, Ice cream man, Abominable snowman in the market, 'Here come the Martians,' all the stuff in Spanish, etc, etc.

Jaybro,
Jonathan used to live in the same town as me (Nevada City) and my Mt. bike riding partner was good friends with him. We took him out on a ride once or twice and he was a totally cool guy.
Obscure, but cool. I know he has a following but it's got to be pretty obscure too.
Nice find.

Too funny, you guys, I said said 'Grass valley' should have been nevada city, I think I've got all but the Mary vid to run.
My ex wife always liked his music but was queasy about being in a crowd of his fans. She is pretty sharrp, but I never understood her views on that one.

It goes one layer deeper. Jonathan Richman slept on Lou Reed's couch after his obsession with the Velvet Underground led him to New York from Boston.

I saw him once in Chico, great show. I really enjoy the Modern Lovers. I want to say future members of Talking heads and The Cars were in that band. Jerry Harrison and ? I love the song "I'm straight" ......not like hippie johnny, always stoned..
Timidtr- I do remember him being kind of aloof. Ska-t, my roommate at the time opened up the show and said he wasn't much for small talk.

I used to hear Roadrunner a lot on WMMS in Cleveland. He also wrote an ode to the Fender Stratocaster, which confirmation of good musical sense.

Jaybro,
ooooh! this dog loves Jonathan Richman's schtick!
i especially like “Ice Cream Man” -- as in my ‘ute we had an ice cream truck that always came by. but, arghhh, i almost never had enough quarters for even a ‘SkyPop’.
i also love his tune (i'm still trying to remember the title) in which he sings:
“If you call my number and I’m not home,
Just leave me a message, so I know I’m not alone”
had that on my answering machine for over a decade.
~~~
long ago, in my wretched blue haired ‘ute, i bought four tickets for a Pixies show – two for me and my then sweetie and two for a buddy and his sweetie who were going to fly in from san diego just for the show. they missed their flight, and in a hurry i had to figure out who to give those two precious tickies to. for _everybody_ wanted them. how to choose?
in the end i came up with an mp3 of 8 song fragments caught in my head at just that moment – then posted it on the old sfgoth junkies list. the deal was, whoever could name the most tunes/artists in the 2 or 3 hours before the show got the tickets. remarkably, our brother lupo got all 8 right and in a heartbeat. (that and went home with my date, sheeesh).
that ancient mp3 is still on this zombie server that simply will not die (much as i wish it would).
so, if any of you can name all 8 tunes/artists before sundown, i’ll send you… well, a cookie.
(Jonathan Richman fans will surely get the first one)
fond memories,
This is the kind of stuff you hope to get when you start a thread!
Pip, I can here those words in my head as I sit hear, (har!) it never would of occured to me to put it on an answering machine, or I woulda. I've been known to be a late adopter of technology.
There is indeed a lot of beauty in the land of the Utes, as hard as live can be to deal with on a daily basis, there. Somewhere here (intentionally playing the spellong straight) Matt has a beautiful shot of Mrs. Matt, performing the Bow (?) asana in front of delicate arch in a sort of dopleganger / infinite regression, kind of deal.
Timid,
> 1st one....too easy
right.
> 2nd "NIxon"?..TMBG
right(ish). John Flansburgh, solo, singing a '68 campaign song first sung by Anita Bryant (and a big hit among my many 'screaming queen hairdresser' (their term) friends in SF)
> 3rd "Jerusalem on the JUkebox" Richard Thompson
right artist, wrong title. "Mother Knows Best"
> 4th...no idea
worth learning french for, the lyrics are a screach and dead on target.
5th...'pay no mind"...Beck (one of my campfire covers)
dead on.
> 6th...no idea...sounds a little like MOrrisey
it does, doesn't it. think lead singer of the Psychedelic Furs... but later in his career.
> 7th...no idea
yeah, this one is the crux. .13d+ the one that i am confident will save me a cookie. the tune was actually 'borrowed' from a weebly college ska band out of new haven called "Enis Penvy And The Fixations" -- though the band who later recorded it insist otherwise.
> 8th..song?..no idea sounds like Richard Shindell (sp)
if Richard Shindell sounds that good, i'll have to check him out. this guy is "From New Jersey..."
hang in there, you're getting close -- and there is a cookie in it for you.
