Well, the sport can't be that tough . . .
"'Cause I am pokin' 'em for sure."
I hope he's not talking 'bout the ferrets . . .

Sounds even more fun than SuperTopo on a bad day.
Thanks for ferreting this one out! Definitely 24 ferret stuff.

I am reading "Out of the Noosphere", a compilation of the best of the first 15 years of Outside Magazine. A great read, and that was one of the stories.
I liked that the King thought of wearing white pants so the blood would show better. Revolutionary!

The Ten Commandments
... as published by the United Ferret Organization
1. Thou shalt covet all corners. Thou shalt not use kitty liter for it is a heathen CAT thing, and thusly, you shalt scatter the heathen thing everywhere.
2. Thou shalt bite thy brethren. Thou shalt lick thy humans, except that thou shalt slip in the occasional nip to ensure that they do not become too complacent.
3. Thou shalt revere milk and ice cream above all things, except for Linatone, which is heaven sent.
4. Thou shalt despise anything that is labeled "For Ferrets".
5. Thou shalt climb everything in sight and take the good stuff.
6. When placed in a cage, or locked in a room or out of a room, thou shalt beat loudly upon the door in violent protest.
7. Thou shalt lurk, and seek every opportunity.
8. Thou shalt love and honor shoes, socks, and above all else, toes.
9. Thou shalt expose the roots of all plants. Let none escape your wrath.
10. Thou shalt hide from sight those things most coveted by humans, that they shall never more see the light of day.

FYI, these are the hunting ferrets, not the pets.
Nasty little bastards with no mercy.
Waaaaayyyy different.

Goggle "Rough and Tumble" in the context of early rural America, especially in the South. This was the popular term for a relatively common form of fighting used to settle disputes/arguments. It included anything and everything brutal you could possibly imagine - ripping out eyes was a common way to win, but chewing off ears and noses was pretty popular, too. I'm not making this up.
