Hey all,

I was just reading the sad--but beautiful--thread about Troy Johnson's passing, and was struck by how bitter-sweet it is that ST was still up long enough for his friends to be alerted to that fact. I don't know that I ever met Troy, but the tributes have been really heartwarming to read, and I'm so glad for him and his family that there was just enough time for those tributes to be posted.

ST has been a great source of history, fun dialog, maddening dialog, relationship-building, technique-improvement, remembrances of our fellow climbers, awareness of new and old cragging possibilities, trip reports, inspiration, and connection.

Thanks, everyone, for years of all the above. I'll miss this place.

I guess it's in our nature to think good things that have lasted for a while will last forever. They don't, and maybe we should have expected this, but it still came as a shock.

Like you Tom, I'll miss this place. You listed a lot of reasons for that, with "connection" as the last. For me, that is by far the most important. Weird names on the screen that turn into friends and partners.

Maybe one of the new Supertopo replacements will flower. I hope so. But even then, I'll still miss this place.

Indeed, I will miss this forum. I am glad to know it will remain in a "read only" format. There is so much history and wisdom posted here (along with some venom and off-topic strangeness).

It was nice to have a place to feel a kinship with so many climbers from so many eras and areas. To know Donini is still running around out there and to learn route lore from Cummins and to read Long's insights into the history of climbing has been so enriching.

I thank you all for sharing in this forum. See you on the steep!

I don't know. I agree that this forum has provided some life enriching experiences but even life without such a place would provide enriching experiences. It depends on what you focus on. A lot of this forum has become a focal point for the kind of behavior I try to avoid. I still come by now and then for the good stuff but it doesn't mean as much to me as it used to. The past has passed and only the odor remains.

I guess what I'm saying is I have already lost a lot of interest in what goes down here. It is going away and no big deal. I'm already doing other fun stuff.

Cheers to all that have shared this place. Take it with you in your heart.

I hear you, Wayno. I've tapered WAY off of ST, though I still visit it a fair amount.

But...life ain't lived online. The best part for me has been getting to meet people like you, David, Perry, et al, and actually sharing a rope, or some tunes.
