Kind of ironic to think he was sort of resurrected as an "elder statesman" in his later years.
Makes one feel nostalgic for the Sat Night Live skits with Akroyd as Nixon and Belushi as Kissinger.

I spent 23 months in Vietnam, and finally got around to watching the Ken Burns documentary, which I finished last night. Didn't realize Nixon delayed the Paris peace talks for 3 months leading up to his election for a second term. What a scumbag!

I read somewhere that Nixon was scared about someone exposing his illegal conduct in torpedoing the peace talks before he was elected.
This may have been a primary motivation in the Watergate break in. Don't know if this is true but it is very interesting.

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Dick.
Some of the stuff he pulled still makes me mighty sick.
In June 1971, President Nixon declared a “war on drugs.” He dramatically increased the size and presence of federal drug control agencies, and pushed through measures such as mandatory sentencing and no-knock warrants.
A top Nixon aide, John Ehrlichman, later admitted: “You want to know what this was really all about. The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying. We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news."
Bastard son of a witch.

It's interesting that Nixon prolonged the war by almost three months, solely for his domestic political interests. Much like Watergate - unnecessary overreach.
And the Reagan campaign had back-channel communications with Iran, to help.
Let's not overlook Obama's people efforts to minimize the Benghazi attack.

Peace negotiations began in 1968.
“North Vietnam insisted for three years that the agreement could not be concluded unless the United States agreed to remove South Vietnamese President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu from power ...”
And you people have yer knickers bunched about 3 months? Who’s on weed?

A good read on the war in Laos is a book called the Ravens.
It is about the US Air Force forward air controllers assisting the CIA in the unofficial war.
Air America flew in tons of freight, unloaded then the planes were filled with whatever Vang Pao and his comrades chose to ship out. No questions asked.
The Hmong grow a lot of opium.

He has poisoned our water forever. Nixon will be remembered as a classic case of a smart man shitting in his own nest. But he also sh#t in our nests, and that was the crime that history will burn on his memory like a brand. By disgracing and degrading the Presidency of the United States, by fleeing the White House like a diseased cur, Richard Nixon broke the heart of the American Dream.

RMN was such a [expletive deleted] potty mouth in private.
Gramma would have washed his pie-hole with Lava Soap if she had had an idea of what his speech habits were really like.
