My son, who lives in Phoenix, has a labrum tear/SLAP IX from a climbing injury and needs a surgeon to repair it.
We would appreciate any recommendations for a doc who does this sort of thing regularly, preferably one knows climbers and how to fix them!

The doctor who fixed mine and Dave Vaughan's is Thomas Hackett at the
Steadman clinic in Vail. He's also done other 'big' name climbers and athletes--I think he's the best in the business. I know he's not in
AZ, but it may be worth your son's while to have it done in Vail. . .

Rick,
Try Dr. David Zemen. He did my left shoulder and both of a friend (another long time climber) and they were all excellent outcomes.

Once you find a doctor Rick, see if the office works with a good rehab facility. Follow up rehab is critical once an instability is addressed. Protecting the surgery during the healing phase yet starting range of motion and retarding atrophy is important. Hope all goes well and you and G are good! Give a ringalingding if you or your son have questions.
Peace

After you find a surgeon, this guy is a sports physical therapist and knows a bit about climbing and climbing injuries. He REALLY helped me last year when I tore my hip flexor. I could barely walk for months, and then I saw him once, learned about the injury and what exercises to do, did them on my own, and in a few weeks I was feeling about a billion times better.
I have a strong feeling he could help your son recover from the shoulder injury too.

I used Physiotherapy Associates Inc.
The head guy there's name is Todd Ellenbecker. He's an excellent shoulder guy, as he does a ton of work with the USTA (tennis). Recommended highly. Look him up.
