Surprised this huge news hasn’t been posted yet. This hits way too close to home, as the aviation community here in Talkeetna is like family.
It cannot be understated how serious of a place the accident site is, how improbable it was that anyone survived the initial limpact, or that the aircraft remained where it hit without falling away. There is a photo in the article of the north face of Thunder Mountain- the impact site was only 200 feet below the summit ridge, directly above the tongue-like hanging glacier just right of center.
This is the same mountain on which Malcolm Daly and Jim Donini’s 1999 accident occurred, although their accident was on the opposite (south facing side, which is almost as steep).
I did not know this pilot nor occupants personally, but it brings back some traumatic memories of two multiple fatality crashes we had not far away from this site in 2003 and 2000 involving several friends and local pilots.
My heart is with the families of these 5, my Denali NPS co workers and friends at the 212th Pararescue and Wainwright Sugar Bears who are still involved in the ongoing recovery efforts, my friends at K2 Aviation, and with all of our community.

By far, the sketchiest part of my Denali trip was the flight in. Condolences.

Sad news. Glad Jim Okonek sold K2. Hard to imagine a Turbine Otter
getting in trouble but...?

Reilly, it was a DHC-2 Beaver
Almost assuredly caused by weather.

Mark, those must have been brought in when Rust bought K2. IMHO the old Beavers
don’t belong up there. They’re a great bush plane but not a mountain plane.

Otters have been supplanting the old beavers and 185’s, but the ones in their fleet have been there for the past 20 years.
In any case, the weather conditions were the primary contributor.

Very sad. Whenever I've flown up there I've been impressed with my pilots skill and competence. A serious place to fly at any time.

This one really shows it, and what the rescuers were dealing with.
Just no way in hell to do this recovery safely.

Grim location.
Reminds me a bit of Kurt and the retrieval on Kennedy.
I hate that a couple of the bush pilots I've flown with are no longer with us. Keli and Kurt. Both really helped us out on the trips we did. Really went the extra mile.
Tough profession.
Condolences.
