Making a "poster" of Mt Whitney for a friend. I say "poster" because it will actually be a full resolution 18" x 24" print, but in the form of a poster. The images are very sharp, so hopefully you can ignore the Supertopo photo limits and see which layout you like better.
For the top photo I hired a plane out of Bishop a few years ago, and hung out the open window for a few hours and got hundreds of cool pictures from Bishop to Lone Pine. Going to do the same thing from Bishop to Lee Vining this summer
Two versions below, any preference? Only difference is bottom picture.

I think the middle pic is cool with the great contrast, the hills, Whitney cold in sunlight and shadows, against blue sky and white clouds.
The bottom set.

thanks clinker, it is one of my favorites. I was shooting Mobius Arch in the am, and driving back along Movie Road, and saw this shot. I have a 24 x 36 of that hanging in my house.

Matt - last year I worked with the USFS and NPS on a display that is currently in front of the big window looking toward Mt Whitney in the Lone Pine Visitor Center. It took them 6 months to agree on what elevation I should use, they agreed on 14,494. I too have seen a number of elevations for Mt Whitney, but this is what the local land management agencies wanted me to use.

yup another vote for v2 fo sho... cropping and colour comp is better in the lower...
have you explored rationalizing them and ordering them from closest to furthest away [or vicee versa]?
regardless, all very nice...

Bottom one. The lower photo in the top one is cropped too close to Whitney's summit.

Top set has better color contrast but I agree the lowest photo does need to be slightly recropped if you use that version.
The bottom set is good without editing- I like Lone Pine Peak included for reference.
As a side: All the arguing about the elevation is a bit wacky. There are different baseline sealevels from which elevation is measured around the world and technically Whitney gets a tiny bit taller each year. I know the USFS officially endorses the under-14,500 version.

I agree, but in order to maintain a 1:2.5 crop ratio, if I crop so there is more sky above the summit, then I lose the lower structures and the picture doesn't work at all. It was a forced crop that doesn't work. It is a gorgeous picture though when not cropped.

Fisherman's Peak -- hah! Much more fun to label it that and let people scratch their heads.

I really favor the top one over the bottom.
I like the close up.....lets you see all kinds of terrain you can't see from town. And I like close ups like that because I can spend my day gazing at features and routes I've done or dream of doing. The bottom one just has the same views you get from town in my opinion and those are a dime a dozen.
And yeah, I love mike's layot. Much better chi.
Cool project!

great comments everyone, some stuff to think about. I'm not a half bad photographer, but graphic layout is a totally different art.
Mike - great layout done so quickly! I have reason for this to be portrait rather than landscape, but I like some of your ideas. I knew I had lots of work to do on the layout/text, was mainly getting comments on the picture combinations.
Matt - even though USFS asked me to use 14,494' for the display in the visitor center, your comment got me to rethink what I do with this piece of work. I have a geodetic surveyor on my staff and he uncovered this for me - the latest National Geodetic Survey data sheet shows 14,508'. NGS is the source for this kind of data so not sure why USFS and NPS don't go with it. I'm going to contact them.

I have been in communication with the regional surveyor for National Geodetic Survey and he also provided me a paper on the history of elevation surveys and computations for Mt Whitney written by USGS.
My correspondence with NGS today says 14,500 ft. USGS says that 14,494 should be the published elevation for USGS provisional maps, single edition USFS maps, and GNIS, but that using NVD88 and VERTCON program from NGS, the elevation is 14,500.
NGS said the new datum in 2022 is likely to reduce elevations in the Whitney area by 3 ft.
I'd be happy to send the USGS doc to anyone interested.
